Silicon
Chemical element with symobl Si
Organic
CompoundsSilicone
Polysiloxane (Organic)
More commonly
known as Silicone
rubber. Very durable
high temperature
withstanding
material...used in
many industries as
sealants, gaskets,
Sheeting etc....This
also is inert and does
not affect water in
any way. No problem
for gloves.
Silicone
Siloxane (Organic)
The siloxanes are buiding blocks for polysiloxane.'Which depending on molecular weight
can be fine light oils, through rubbers, to harder resins, the higher the molecular weight'.
In the case of oils... they are very efficient lubricating oils used in high temperatures.
These are the big issue for gloves. Reason being that they have a very , very high surface
tension and react vigourosly with water, repelling it. Tiny amounts in ppm will disrupt the
even film formation of water based paints,as they repel water to such an extent that tiny
microscopic amounts of Siloxane oil create a crater around them making so called 'fish
eyes' or 'saucers'.Mainly in the likes of car industry where people handle panels before
spraying. We actually used to use it in gloves dipping, 20 years ago when Siloxane based
anti foams were used in water based latex, Nitrile, NR etc to break foam and antiweb to
stop webs in the finger crotches. In those days people used Solvent based paints which
dissolved the like organic oils & there was no issue opposite to the water situation now.
In-organic compounds.
Inert in nature. Examples,
sand, granite, dust particles,
silicon dioxide in glass…no
surface chemistry to affect
water surface tensions.
Abundant in nature. Nothing
to do with Silicone which is a
problem for gloves.
No problem for gloves
Note: Silicones are
polymers that include
silicon together with
carbon, hydrogen,
oxygen, and sometimes
other elements. These
materials consist of an
inorganic silicon-
oxygen backbone with
organic side groups
attached to the silicon
atoms. Polysiloxane are
among the many
substances commonly
known as "silicones".
Silicone is also called
Organic compound of
Silicon.
