Issue 7 (June 2016)
FOODIE Newsletter
FOODIE Team'scorner
Dear Members of FOODIE Community,
FOODIE project has entered in the last year of its schedule. This seventh issue covers the period from March 2016 to
June 2016 and gives evidence of the more mature technical results and progress in pilot sites. In addition, you are
provided with an overview of the upcoming events and a brief summary of the past events where the FOODIE Team
presented the project. We hope you find the information interesting!
ABOUT FOODIE
FOODIE project is a co-funded research project funded under the ICT Policy Support Programme (ICT PSP) by
European Commission. FOODIE project aims at building an open and interoperable agricultural specialized platform
hub on the cloud for the management of spatial and non-spatial agriculture related data from heterogeneous sources.
FOODIE platform represents a new innovative solution for different user needs; FOODIE can provide a marketplace
where data can be discovered and exchanged but also external companies can publish their own agricultural
applications based on the data, services and applications.
The objectives and achievements of the project have been demonstrated in three different pilot scenarios across
Europe:
Pilot 1: Precision Viticulture (Spain).
Pilot 2: Open Data for Strategic and Tactical planning (Czech Republic).
Pilot 3: Technology allows integration of logistics via service providers and farm management including traceability
(Germany).
PILOT EXECUTION PROGRESS
Spanish Pilot
The Spanish Pilot continues its development regarding the use of precision viticulture with the aid of the Information
and communications technologies.
The deployment of all agro-meteorological stations and their integration in the FOODIE platform is providing near-real
time data about the agro-climatic conditions. It allows Terras Gauda taking full advantage of the dashboard developed
in FOODIE for planning agricultural interventions based on the conditions of the vineyard. In addition, the dashboard
provides indicators for health and hydric stress of the grapes which are obtained processing satellite imagery.
It allows taking decisions about site-specific interventions such as fertilization or irrigation. The help of the mobile App
is also remarkable for the work in the vineyard. It is easy to register geo-located annotations and issues and counts
with a notification system for receiving alerts, for instance, regarding outbreaks of grapevine diseases.
On the other hand, the harvesting season will arrive in a few months and early grape yield prediction is crucial. It
allows winegrowers to make decisions concerning logistics and consider alternative grape providers in order to
maintain the expected wine production.
Yield prediction is also valuable as an indicator for the quality of the final product, managed by means of agricultural
practices for controlling the vigor of the vines.
However, the procedure for the estimation of grape
production is often a time-consuming method that requires
counting the number of inflorescences or the number of
bunches per vine and also requires to estimate the average
weight of the bunches.
In this regard, the Spanish pilot is working on the
development of grape yield forecasting models based on
machine learning algorithms, considering soil analysis,
meteorological variables associated to phenological stages,
satellite imagery, crop production and viticultural climatic
indices. The experimental results show interesting
conclusions about which development stages of the vineyard
are more important for yield prediction and which other
variables are relevant for this task.
Czech pilot
The recent development in the Czech pilot involved Telematics of Farm Machinery and estimation of Yield potential
zones. During previous stages the development was focused mainly on analytical functions on the server side.
In the first months of 2016 the first version of user
interface making the functions accessible was introduced
to end-user.
During spring 2016 Wirelessinfo continued with
improvement of the user interface and opening new
features to end-user.
Current development of new analytical features is aiming
to interconnect information from Yield Potential Zones
and Telematics of Farm Machinery.
The Telematics of Farm Machinery is strongly related to input side of farming while the Yield Potential Zones represents
a part of output side. Analysis of this information together is a key step for the evaluation of cost efficiency.
German Pilot
The German pilot is devoted to demonstrate how to upgrade logistics with orthoimages and additionally LPIS (Land
parcel Information System) data. LPIS data is collected from governmental organisations approved and signed by the
farmers as owners of the data. (Ortho-)Images are crucial in rural areas taking into account that road-network does not
exist and rural road in principle represents a working place that can be occupied by other farmers who have the right to
work there. To close this existing gap PROGIS worked out together with Wirelessinfo a new model for it: they
restructured the OSM (Open Street Map) to an OTM (Open Transport Map) that allows routing and PROGIS linked
WinGIS to this map enabling a local responsible organization to digitize the road network and add attributive data like,
width, tons, height etc. that are part of routing. Next step consists in integrating the cadastre data and install it on the
FOODIE server to show that one server could manage all needs.
PROGIS has also linked in tests the farm management-system DokuPlant and will make the embedded expert data set
available on the FOODIE platform. This will allow communication of farmer´s contracts via the FOODIE server directly to
the mobile device on the tractor or other agro machines.
NEW FOODIE USE CASES!
FOODIE project has three pilots being developed and tested in Spain, Germany and Czech Republic, and it also includes
three smaller pilots (or use cases) in other countries: Poland, Turkey, Italy and Latvia.
The aim of the Polish use case is the development and testing of a decision support system for plant diseases. The
development and execution of the Polish use case is driven mainly by WODR, subcontracted by PSNC for FOODIE. The
tests are being conducted in some of the farms that are part of the network of demonstration farms (around 100) built
by WODR in the region. Sielinko is one of these demonstration farms where a fair was held to disseminate, inter alia,
some of FOODIE results (Please click here to learn more!).
The scope of the Turkish use case is to integrate geographical data with pasture/grasslands data collected by
Department of Pasture and Forage. Testing activities comprises analysis of soil quality and ingredients (rehabilitation of
pastures), detection and comparison of pasture boundaries (determination of boundaries) analysis of forage on
pastures (prediction of meat production cost).
The Italian use case is focused on general land description and agricultural datasets for Alpine farms: general planning,
orthophotos, cadaster, general technical maps, protected areas, forest distribution and types, crops, rural roads,
aqueducts, geology, ecosystems, etc. Next steps consist in evaluating GPS sensors traceability on summer high
mountain cows pasture.
The Latvian use case is addressed on precision farming and horticulture. Since the arable farming plays a crucial role in
the national economy, there is a huge potential for extension of PA services, which are now on very low level. The
target is mainly the horticulture (for example cranberries production or vegetation in greenhouses). During the next
period, the use case will focus on agro-meteorological monitoring, farm telemetry and yield potential.
FOODIE OUTREACH
FOODIE at Baltic Open (Geo) Data Hackathon 2016
16 March 2016 – 18 March 2016 Riga, Latvia. The importance of open data and open geodata is increasing. But the
potential of open (geo) data has not been fully exploited. This is true in most parts of Europe including the Baltic
Region. Similar conditions relate also to the software tools helping to
collect, manipulate and publish such data. There is a need to address
these challenges and where possible to improve this situation. For this
reason, the Baltic Open (Geo) Data Hackathon was organised. A
hackathon is very often
understood as some
exercises of programmers
or data specialists. The
Baltic Open Data
Hackathon extended this approach by inviting also end users.
The applicatio Esti atio of Crop Yield Pote tial was selected by
Baltic Open Data Hackathon jury as one of the three winning
applications.
FOODIE at the EGU General Assembly 2016

DEFI
définition de politiques ;
évaluation de performances environnementales ;
développement de l’agriculture soutenable, collecte de
culture,et définition du timing et de la politique tarifaire ;
pas,à partir de sources hétérogènes;
intégrer ensembles ouverts de données européennes,
existantes et de valeur,liés à l’agriculture;
d’une interface de programmation applicative (API);
fournir applications et services spécifiques et à forte
rentabilité pour soutenir la planification des procès
décisionnels des différents groups de parties intéressées;
d’entretien.
Traçabilité et cumulabilité faciles des services;
Paiement à la consommation (« pay-as-you-go »);
Mécanismes de récompenses pour le partage de
données;
final;
Interfaces multi-appareils/multiplateformes/ multi-
usages.

FOODIE newsletter issue #7

  • 1. contact@foodie-project.eu Issue 7 (June 2016) FOODIE Newsletter FOODIE Team'scorner Dear Members of FOODIE Community, FOODIE project has entered in the last year of its schedule. This seventh issue covers the period from March 2016 to June 2016 and gives evidence of the more mature technical results and progress in pilot sites. In addition, you are provided with an overview of the upcoming events and a brief summary of the past events where the FOODIE Team presented the project. We hope you find the information interesting! ABOUT FOODIE FOODIE project is a co-funded research project funded under the ICT Policy Support Programme (ICT PSP) by European Commission. FOODIE project aims at building an open and interoperable agricultural specialized platform hub on the cloud for the management of spatial and non-spatial agriculture related data from heterogeneous sources. FOODIE platform represents a new innovative solution for different user needs; FOODIE can provide a marketplace where data can be discovered and exchanged but also external companies can publish their own agricultural applications based on the data, services and applications. The objectives and achievements of the project have been demonstrated in three different pilot scenarios across Europe: Pilot 1: Precision Viticulture (Spain). Pilot 2: Open Data for Strategic and Tactical planning (Czech Republic). Pilot 3: Technology allows integration of logistics via service providers and farm management including traceability (Germany). PILOT EXECUTION PROGRESS Spanish Pilot The Spanish Pilot continues its development regarding the use of precision viticulture with the aid of the Information and communications technologies. The deployment of all agro-meteorological stations and their integration in the FOODIE platform is providing near-real time data about the agro-climatic conditions. It allows Terras Gauda taking full advantage of the dashboard developed in FOODIE for planning agricultural interventions based on the conditions of the vineyard. In addition, the dashboard provides indicators for health and hydric stress of the grapes which are obtained processing satellite imagery. It allows taking decisions about site-specific interventions such as fertilization or irrigation. The help of the mobile App is also remarkable for the work in the vineyard. It is easy to register geo-located annotations and issues and counts with a notification system for receiving alerts, for instance, regarding outbreaks of grapevine diseases. On the other hand, the harvesting season will arrive in a few months and early grape yield prediction is crucial. It allows winegrowers to make decisions concerning logistics and consider alternative grape providers in order to maintain the expected wine production. Yield prediction is also valuable as an indicator for the quality of the final product, managed by means of agricultural practices for controlling the vigor of the vines.
  • 2. However, the procedure for the estimation of grape production is often a time-consuming method that requires counting the number of inflorescences or the number of bunches per vine and also requires to estimate the average weight of the bunches. In this regard, the Spanish pilot is working on the development of grape yield forecasting models based on machine learning algorithms, considering soil analysis, meteorological variables associated to phenological stages, satellite imagery, crop production and viticultural climatic indices. The experimental results show interesting conclusions about which development stages of the vineyard are more important for yield prediction and which other variables are relevant for this task. Czech pilot The recent development in the Czech pilot involved Telematics of Farm Machinery and estimation of Yield potential zones. During previous stages the development was focused mainly on analytical functions on the server side. In the first months of 2016 the first version of user interface making the functions accessible was introduced to end-user. During spring 2016 Wirelessinfo continued with improvement of the user interface and opening new features to end-user. Current development of new analytical features is aiming to interconnect information from Yield Potential Zones and Telematics of Farm Machinery.
  • 3. The Telematics of Farm Machinery is strongly related to input side of farming while the Yield Potential Zones represents a part of output side. Analysis of this information together is a key step for the evaluation of cost efficiency. German Pilot The German pilot is devoted to demonstrate how to upgrade logistics with orthoimages and additionally LPIS (Land parcel Information System) data. LPIS data is collected from governmental organisations approved and signed by the farmers as owners of the data. (Ortho-)Images are crucial in rural areas taking into account that road-network does not exist and rural road in principle represents a working place that can be occupied by other farmers who have the right to work there. To close this existing gap PROGIS worked out together with Wirelessinfo a new model for it: they restructured the OSM (Open Street Map) to an OTM (Open Transport Map) that allows routing and PROGIS linked WinGIS to this map enabling a local responsible organization to digitize the road network and add attributive data like, width, tons, height etc. that are part of routing. Next step consists in integrating the cadastre data and install it on the FOODIE server to show that one server could manage all needs. PROGIS has also linked in tests the farm management-system DokuPlant and will make the embedded expert data set available on the FOODIE platform. This will allow communication of farmer´s contracts via the FOODIE server directly to the mobile device on the tractor or other agro machines. NEW FOODIE USE CASES! FOODIE project has three pilots being developed and tested in Spain, Germany and Czech Republic, and it also includes three smaller pilots (or use cases) in other countries: Poland, Turkey, Italy and Latvia. The aim of the Polish use case is the development and testing of a decision support system for plant diseases. The development and execution of the Polish use case is driven mainly by WODR, subcontracted by PSNC for FOODIE. The tests are being conducted in some of the farms that are part of the network of demonstration farms (around 100) built by WODR in the region. Sielinko is one of these demonstration farms where a fair was held to disseminate, inter alia, some of FOODIE results (Please click here to learn more!). The scope of the Turkish use case is to integrate geographical data with pasture/grasslands data collected by Department of Pasture and Forage. Testing activities comprises analysis of soil quality and ingredients (rehabilitation of pastures), detection and comparison of pasture boundaries (determination of boundaries) analysis of forage on pastures (prediction of meat production cost). The Italian use case is focused on general land description and agricultural datasets for Alpine farms: general planning, orthophotos, cadaster, general technical maps, protected areas, forest distribution and types, crops, rural roads, aqueducts, geology, ecosystems, etc. Next steps consist in evaluating GPS sensors traceability on summer high mountain cows pasture. The Latvian use case is addressed on precision farming and horticulture. Since the arable farming plays a crucial role in the national economy, there is a huge potential for extension of PA services, which are now on very low level. The target is mainly the horticulture (for example cranberries production or vegetation in greenhouses). During the next period, the use case will focus on agro-meteorological monitoring, farm telemetry and yield potential. FOODIE OUTREACH FOODIE at Baltic Open (Geo) Data Hackathon 2016 16 March 2016 – 18 March 2016 Riga, Latvia. The importance of open data and open geodata is increasing. But the potential of open (geo) data has not been fully exploited. This is true in most parts of Europe including the Baltic Region. Similar conditions relate also to the software tools helping to collect, manipulate and publish such data. There is a need to address these challenges and where possible to improve this situation. For this reason, the Baltic Open (Geo) Data Hackathon was organised. A hackathon is very often understood as some exercises of programmers or data specialists. The Baltic Open Data Hackathon extended this approach by inviting also end users. The applicatio Esti atio of Crop Yield Pote tial was selected by Baltic Open Data Hackathon jury as one of the three winning applications.
