Sensing Enterprise
2. Definition: “a complex smart entity capable of sensing and
reacting to a wide ranging set of (business) stimuli”
Characterised by decentralised intelligence and fusion
between the physical world of atoms and the virtual world of
bits
Opens up the possibility of a third world - the digital world:
enable the enterprise to acquire new capabilities, new
properties, and new and multiple identities
Sensing (enterprise) system will acquire a multiplicity of self-*
properties that can be summarised as “self-reinvention”
Europe needs to develop a new generation of sensing
networked systems to fully exploit the potential of the next
generation Internet and its capacity to support new notions of
business behaviours, forms, and values
FInES Cluster Meeting, May 6th, 2013 2
3. Transformation of the way that:
business is created
business activity is transacted
business inputs are gathered, processed and factorised;
the outputs of business generate values for customers, business
partners and other stakeholders
Shifting the focus and prioritisation of enterprises resources
and activities
The Internet as the Universal Business System
Open & Linked data for Open & Linked Future Enterprises
"Sensing capabilities" to provide enterprises with new
capabilities to more rapidly adapt to market changes and local
specificities
Opportunity may vary according to economic and industrial
sectors; especially attractive in relation to support for SMEs
FInES Cluster Meeting, May 6th, 2013 3
4. Functional-technical challenges

business model innovation
Relationships, balance of power and control between people and
objects in enterprises and enterprise networks
Critical issue: governance of intelligent things for an intelligent
civilisation to serve people
5. Support research, application, demonstration and deployment of IoT and
associated cyber-physical systems & platforms for development & large scale
uptake of novel value-added enterprise applications, services & systems
Support Sensing Enterprise scenarios for the demonstration and deployment
of FI-PPP generic enablers and platforms
Target strategic industrial sectors for Sensing Enterprise research, innovation
and uptake
Investigate the business case and economics for the Sensing Enterprise
