Social networking site
Abbreviated as SNS a social networking site
is the phrase used to describe any Web site that enables users to create
public profiles within that Web site and form relationships with other users of the
same Web site who access their profile. Social networking sites can be used to
describe community-based Web sites, online discussions forums, chatrooms and
other social spaces online.
See also social network.
A social networking site is
a website where individuals can set up an online profile, describing his/her
interests, and add links to other profiles. Generally, users are able to post personal
information, including photographs, videos, and blog entries. One such
site, MySpace, has been extremely popular both with individuals and with music
groups, who can post their songs on their profile pages and advertise their tour
dates. Many bands will attempt to solicit as many "friends" as possible on these
sites, so that more people will be aware of their music.
Sites for social networking are popular with people all over the world, particularly
teenagers and people in their 20s. Because it is so popular with teenagers, some
people are concerned that teenagers and kids who post personal information on
these sites are at risk of being solicited by pedophiles. As a result, some sites have
taken precautions to monitor the information provided by underage patrons;
however, there is no way to enforce proof of age or identity, so this issue is
currently unresolved.
Social networking sites can be a great way to stay in touch with a large group of
people. If you have news you'd like to share with everyone you know, you can
simply post it on your own personal bulletin board, and it will be distributed to
everyone on your friends list. These sites can also be helpful for connecting with
new people, whether on a business, friendship, or a romantic level.
On some social networking sites, you can only make a connection
with someone who is already linked to people that you have claimed as
friends. On others, it is possible to contact anyone you like. However,
2. some people claim to make their profiles private, and available only to
people they select as their friends. This can be a wise decision,
particularly if you have information available on a site that you would
not want the general public, such as a family member or an employer, to
see.
Effects of Social Networking Sites
A social networking site is described as a website where individuals can set up an
online profile, describing his/her interests”( Ebony pg.1). It has been seen to have
both a negative and positive effect on society. The media seems to control the way
people are and how they interact with others. Social networking gives individuals
the ability to feel free and open about things. Social networking has greatly
impacted society, especially when it comes down to common sites such as face
book, my space, or even twitter. Although social networking can have a positive
impact on society, it mostly has a negative impact on society. The social
networking websites make it so that way people can easily interact with the people
around them whether it be people they know or people they don’t. Your cell phone
might not always work so a lot of people turn to other means of communication,
which is where social networking comes into play. Sites such as face book, my
space, and twitter give people the opportunity to communicate with other
individuals. These sites are also used for social events that you may want people to
attend. People then invite others to that event which gives them the option to click
attend, not attend, or maybe if they aren’t sure if they’re going to make it or not.
This use of communication definitely comes in handy when it comes down to
invitations because people may not always have a phone to send out invites. And
mailing invitations can sometimes take too long depending on how many people
you plan on inviting to this event. This shows that there are definitely positive
sides to social networking. Along with the positives comes some negative
effects of social networking in our society today. “Social networking is Ironical in
its name because it doesn’t bring people closer but creates big gaps in relationships
with people who really matter the most in our life”. When people think of social
networking they tend t

classroom to follow interests, developing creativeness and self expression, coming into contact with
varied viewpoints, and networking online to make decisions interrelated to higher education like
which college to focus or which programs to chase, as per Boule (2008) and Greenhow (2009).
The first-of-its-kind study carried out at the University of Minnesota disclosed the educational
benefits of social networking sites and also finds that low-income students are just as technologically
savoir-faire as compared to not low-income. According to the study found, 94 % of the students in
the study used the net, 82 % go online at home, and 77% had a profile on a social networking site.

The Advantages and Disadvantages of
Social Networking
Social networking is a recent invention that has the
Internet still at the edge of its seat due to its popularity with people. This is mostly
because it really is for the people. Bringing every kind of social group together in one
place and letting them interact is really a big thing indeed. Everything about it lies on
the advantages and disadvantages of social networking, and what it can do for you.
Here are the advantages that can be more than enough for you to want to join in.
Low Costs
Definitely, it's cheaper to use online social networking for both personal and business
use because most of it is usually free. While personal use is rather simple for
anyone, the business functions are underestimated by many. In a social networking
site, you can scout out potential customers and target markets with just a few clicks
and keystrokes, adding a boost to your usual advertisements and promotional
strategies. It lets you learn about their likes and dislikes, which is tremendous. If you
want to fine tune your business, then this is the way to go, whether on a budget or
not.
Builds Credibility
You definitely can gain the customers' confidence if you can connect to them on both
a personal and professional level. Despite having to do a bit of work, it definitely
5. pays off as you can be tapped for an offer if someone catches wind of your products
or services. As long as you don't pursue them too aggressively, you will do well here.
Connections
You are friends with people who have other friends, and so on. There is potential in
such a common situation. By using a social networking site, you can do what you can
and get connected with these people to form a web of connections that can give you
leverage if you play your cards right. As long as you give as well as you recieve, then
they will most likely stick with you. These connections are definitely valuable in the
long run.
That definitely sounds enticing. However, what about the disadvantages though?
Lack of Anonymity
You are putting out information about your name, location, age, gender, and many
other types of information that you may not want to let others know. Most people
would say be careful, but no one can be certain at any given time. As long as people
can know who you exactly are, then some can find ways to do you in.
Scams and Harassment
There is a potential for failure of security in both personal and business context.
While many sites apply certain measures to keep any of these cases of harassment,
cyber-stalking, online scams, and identity theft to an absolute minimum, you still
may never know.
Time Consuming
If this is not your kind of thing, that it would just be a waste of time for you. The key
to social networking is that it is supposed to be fun, whether you are just doing it for
kicks or clicking around for business purposes. That should be reasonable enough for
anyone, but there are those people who don't see the point. For them, it can be a
disadvantage.
Now there is something to really think about. Nothing is without a blemish, but those
of this type of networking shouldn't really be that much of a concern regarding your
safety. As long as you go along without making big mistakes, then it is all good. You
can take advantage of the Internet phenomenon that continues up to this day.
Once you understand the advantages and disadvantages of social networking, then
you can cruise through without fail.
