Required Textbooks: New English Upgrade-Student Book 2 by Steven Gershon and Chris Mares
Foundations of Freshman English Writing by Chris Sanders

Objectives: This course offers students an opportunity to practice and improve their English speaking and
writing skills in meaningful and relevant ways. Grammar, vocabulary, listening and reading skills are all
expected to improve organically through interaction with foreign faculty, through cooperative activities with
other students, and through supplemental online assignments. This course is designed to build students’
confidence to communicate in English, to foster students’ life-long learning of English, and to broaden their
global perspectives.
You will:
    • Build confidence to convey your ideas and opinions clearly and effectively in English.
    • Improve grammar, pronunciation, and organization skills.
    • Utilize effective body language and eye contact.
    • Gain greater awareness and understanding of diverse cultural and global perspectives.

Evaluation:

    • Attendance 10%
    • Participation 30% (includes homework and classroom performance)
    • Midterm Project & Final Project 45% (20% Midterm + 25% Final)
    • Writing Quizzes 10%
    • Final Writing Test 5%

Attendance: Every class is important. Do not intentionally miss class.

If you miss more than 6 classes in the semester, you will fail the course.
     • If you are more than 5 minutes late, you are marked late. Three late marks equal
        one class absence.
     • If you are more than 20 minutes late for class, you will be marked absent.
     • If you are absent due to a military examination or because of your major, please bring an
official excuse paper to the Language Center office in Room 207.
     • If you are absent, it is your responsibility to get notes, study material from your
classmates, and do any homework you missed.

Participation:
It is very important you work hard and attend every class. In order to get a high participation score you must:
                              • Speak English only in class.
                              • Ask questions when you need help or do not understand.
                              • Assist and cooperate with your classmates and join in activities
                                 enthusiastically.
                              • Come prepared to class and complete all homework.
                              • Bring to every class: textbook, notebook (for taking notes), Plastic Folder
                                 containing Handouts, and Pen(s).
                              • Turn off your phone before the beginning of class.
