1. YouTube is a video sharing website
on which users can upload and
share videos (usually amateur vide-
os by individuals), and create
themed playlists of saved videos.

session, and drawing on wider expertise.
Create playlists for Virtual Learning Environments, re-
moving distractions in sending to the live site.

Setting Up an Account
Go to: http://www.youtube.com/
and select ‘Create Account’.
Follow the simple step-by-step in-
structions, and remember that you
can edit your settings once the ac-
count has been created.
Account Settings
Select the drop-down arrow next to your user
name, and see options including ‘My Chan-
nel’, which contains your uploaded videos,
‘favourites’, and collections you’ve curated.

2. Watching a YouTube Video
Use the search function to
find a video.
To select a video that you
like, click on the image.
Use the controls below to watch the video (these may
change slightly in appearance, but essentially remain the
same):
Favouriting a Video
To save a video to watch for
later, or to recommend to
others watching your video
stream, look below the vid-
eo.
“Like” a video to add to the
‘crowd’ who approve of the video.

3. Curate a Collection of Videos
Again, below the video, click on ‘Add To’. You can just add
to ‘Favorites’, or you can create a Playlist (for a particular
set of videos on a topic).
Playlists are helpful in creating sets of videos that you re-
quire students to watch before a taught session. List by
theme, or by week. See the YouTube ‘Help’ pages for more

Embedding YouTube Videos
The ‘Share’ option gives you a
URL or the ‘Embed Code’ to
share the video with others.
The flag is an option to ‘flag as
inappropriate’. The final button
will bring up an automatically
generated transcript.
