ESSENTIALS OF THE PASTORAL MINISTRY (CPL 01)
(The Pastoral Ministry in the Old Testament)
Ezekiel A. Odeyemi
The Meaning of the word
The Encyclopaedia Britannica defines him as one who tends sheep, a pastor. To pastor is
to guard and guide. It is to pilot, steer, conduct, show, direct, lead, and to route.
In the literal sense, he is one who cares for a flock of sheep.
The Hebrew word, ra’ah, is translated to shepherd, feed, tend, to pasture, to cause one’s
heard to graze. Ra’ah has to do with tending and caring for one’s animals, particularly by
providing them with good pasture. This verb occurs more than 170 times in the OT. From
ra’ah (verb), we got ro’eh, which is translated ‘shepherd’ (The New Spirit-filled Life
Bible)
The exaltedness of the position of a shepherd

his/her people)
