Introduction
The CBS and MoAD are the two major agencies of the
government
that produce agricultural statistics.
•The CBS has been conducting the decennial agricultural
censuses since
1961/62.
•The MoAD collects and publishes annual data on cropped area
and
production of major crops and some other related statistics based
on
reports of the district offices.
•The information is primarily based on administrative records and
subjective assessments of the respective district field offices.
4. Irrigation
4
•Irrigation refers to purposely providing water, other than rain, for improving
pastures or crop production.
•The reference period for the irrigation was census reference year (January to
December 2011).
•The information collected under irrigation was the area of the parcel by
source of irrigation (by land irrigated approach, not by crop).
•The Land Area was collected by Tenure Types on the Holding for Each
Parcel
•The information collected in the census can be tabulated only by the level
and type of irrigation.
5. Source of Irrigation
5
The source of irrigation covered in agriculture census 2011.
1. River/lake/pond (gravity)
2. River/lake/pond (to be pumped)
3. Dam/reservoir
4. Deep well/tube well
5. Other (collection of rain water, natural well)
6. Mixed
6. Area of land Irrigation
6
•All the information on irrigation collected at parcel level which are
compatible with
• type of land,
•area under different temporary/permanent crops,
•land tenure,
•land use
•the tabulation was done only for the area of the land (other cross-sectional
tabulation/analysis were needed).
7. 7
The specified modes of payment for the irrigation water were as
follows:
•Fee per area
•Fee per time
•Other term
•Didn't pay
Payment for Irrigation
8. Use and source of Irrigation Machinery and Equipment
8
•Use of Agricultural Machinery and Equipment .
•Number of Agriculture Machinery and Equipment on the holding by
Source.

11. Agriculture census 2011did not covered
11
Agriculture census 2011 did not covered following areas
•fully and partially controlled irrigation system and its specified types.
• Method of irrigation: Surface, Sprinklers and Localized irrigation.
•Area equipped for irrigation.
12. Challenges
12
•The sampling was done without considering the irrigation. Some of the
estimates of area irrigated at district level has been under/over estimated
though it was acceptable at national level.
•It was difficult to define the concept of "irrigation" and "area of land actually
irrigated“. Farmers and enumerators could correctly understand the census
definition of irrigation being a bit technical to understand.
