We are going to discuss the Supply Chain Management system of the computer manufacturer, DELL Inc.
Dell Inc. was started by Michael Dell in 1984 in his dorm room. In 1985, he had more than $75 million in sales. Dell Inc. joined the Fortune 500 list in 1992. Dell recently slipped to the 2 nd position in computer sales, next to HP.
Michael Dell is a college dropout. He changed how computers are sold. He started the business with only $1000 in capital. Now, the business is worth $17.3 billion.
Dell’s success can attributed to 3 primary factors. 1. Direct Sales 2. Build-to-order 3. Supplier Integration. These factors are explained in detail in the later part of the presentation. These factors together allow the company to achieve maximum effectiveness with minimum cost.
Direct sales is the first step to building Dell’s synergistic operations paradigm It enables other innovations that allow for minimizing the supply chain size and costs Additionally, it allows Dell to offer a superior customer experience
Build to order is enabled by the direct sales system. It allows Dell to give the customer exactly what he wants while minimizing inventory holding times Since computers don’t need to be built in advance, Dell does not need to forecast demand as much as it otherwise would
Supplier integration is the last piece of Dell’s just in time inventory system It enables Dell to order parts and have them delivered on extremely tight schedules Dell’s focus on collaboration with its suppliers enables an effective supplier integration
All of the elements of Dell’s system work together to enable a just in time inventory system If one piece was missing, the whole project would fail That is the key to a successful JIT implementation – all of the aspects of your business must synergize with a JIT philosophy
