- 6. OS Street View An out-of-the-box street map designed for web use, OS Street View is easy to overlay with your own data for compelling insights about towns and cities. OS OPENDATA First launched in 2010. In March 2015 OS launched four new Beta OpenData products. 1:50 000 Scale Gazetteer A GB reference tool and location finder containing 250,000 distinctive place and feature names in the 1:50,000 Scale Colour Raster product. OS Open Roads A generalised road network product, enabling high level network queries and the sharing of data. OS Open Rivers A generalised network product for Great Britain’s rivers and watercourses. OS Open Map – Local A new ‘street-level’ dataset designed to be the most detailed open data mapping product available for Great Britain from OS. OS Open Names A search gazetteer showing the most up to date place names, road names/numbers and postcodes.

- not only what the new products are, but more about the opportunity, the benefit and the versatility OS Open Data can bring in many diverse ways to different people, from public to business. share with you what we have, why we think it’s great and also let you into the minds of our product management team, and the challenges they face with encouraging great things, yet retaining the perfect blend in product positing. Also, let’s have a look at some recent examples of what we have found people to be using OS OpenData for. Have you thought of these? Have you had your own experiences you want to share? - We all love Open Data. Not only because it’s free, but because it actually underpins a number of aspects that are more invisible in the grand scheme of things. The Open Data that OS provides isn’t just a taster. It’s the unveiling of real, useful, accurate content. ‘designed’. A lot of thinking, time and energy is invested to ensure OS open offerings are what you need. OS Open Data encourage and enable government and business to undertake visualisation and analysis. Because OpenData is accessible, the speed and uptake is beneficial. And of course, that word ‘innovation’ is is encouraged, with the world of software, solutions and magical tools provided – mapping and the data behind it is never far away from such apps – a nd what better way for our technical friends and partners out there than to get hold of good and useable data – for free. Their amazing work will benefit the businesses and rest of you in the business chain side the ecosystem.
- So, OS Open Data originated in 2010 – with an exemplar of an OpenData portfolio, which has proved to be very well received. March/April 2015 saw a number of new ‘OpenData Products’ released. In summary, OML = strong and highly detailed street level mapping – including key functional sites. A good b/drop map and enabling analysis…. Open Roads = high level, generalised road network. Rivers = Networked, generalised river product. OS Open Names = Search Gazetteer for road names / nos and PostCodes. All in BETA, but good news – expected for product release (e.g. V1.0) later in the year (circa QTR 4). Come and have a chat with us on the stand to see them in action…. OS Open Rivers and OS Open Roads Esri UK processed and loaded the 2 products into a file geodatabase which is hosted in ArcGIS Online. Esri UK have also provided customers with guidance on what the data is and how to use it. They released this as a blog article in July 2015. OS Open Names and Code-Point Open Esri UK have made these available as ArcGIS Locators – you can find out more here.
- Breakdown numbers as of April 2016 for : FY 2015/16 Items 54% Open Map – Local at impressive 134,000 downloads in the first year!
- I’ve heard the word analysis used so much since I started working for OS. Here’s what the internet tells us analysis really is: Analysis is the process of breaking a complex topic or substance into smaller parts in order to gain a better understanding of it OK, that summarised OpenData perfectly doesn’t it? There’s so much data out there at your finger tips. One other angle on this is that we think about the to different aspects to ‘backdrop mapping’ and ‘analysis’. Some would argue they are separate beasts, we however believe the two compliment each other perfectly. It’s great to get your numbers and statistics out, and that’s fine – it’s a great tool. But, when you want to display the results of what that data actually means, that’s when the two join forces and become the next best double-act since Ant and Dec(!) Take the backdrop map, style it your way if you like, overlay the other data, and analyse your heart out. Arguably a great start. Using OS Open Map – Local with other datasets – crime stats, available site and competitors to understand the best location to site a new business etc.
- Amazing stats for OS OpenData. 10,000 users – using this, as a product manager gaining 10k customers is a great feeling….. Os have a responsibility to ensure experience is good for download and using – we have worked hard to make sure our services stand up to this level of expectation – we’ve learned lessons and want to keep improving…with your help of course.
- An interesting view of the OS OpenData statistics broken down into differing sectors. Lot’s of differing sectors. Which one do you fall into?
- Companies of all sizes are exploring and benefiting from OS OpenData. The expectation is high. Businesses of all levels can trust in and improve further compel their offerings using awesome OS mapping.
- Take OS Open Map – Local as an example. When the BETA product was first made available it didn’t take long until people and businesses alike took to the world of Social Media to demonstrate diversity. There were some great personal examples of how people has customised their maps – demonstrating that cartographic and artistic excellence was promoted in the world of our technical savvy followers. Talk about the in space option…
- How OS open data has a presence within the wider Open Data landscape… the WHERE, WHAT and WHO… The Map is the Geospatial glue holding it all together… Looking at the trend of spatial data and the answers it can empower, there appears to be a clear journey. Starting from ‘The Map’ – the visual aid. It’s how we all know a map, but it’s useful for navigational aids, visual representation, location and more…but it’s the next level (that next doorway) that opens up more power. The information, the attribution that aligns with the location. Can the map, as well as looking pretty, also let us have some knowledge, from which we can then undertake this ‘analysis’ we keep talking about. But what’s behind the next door? It’s the next level up. It’s the ability to use data to plan ahead and understand not only the world, but the behaviour people have in and round it. It’s all very aligned to the IOT, Smart Cities and Big data of course, but from recent reviews of what you are doing with data, it shows us that maps are still powerful, but the information is critical into understanding what we do, and what we might do next, so we can all be ahead of the game…. It’s exciting….
- Let’s take a look now at some real examples of the benefits that OS OpenData has brought to light…
- CentreMaps are keen users of OS Open Data and use integrate both Open and Premium OS products into their services. OS OpenData enables a more involved and engaged experience to ordering services and allows quicker production of contextual maps. Up-sell is certainly a valid option here, aided by OS OpenData.
- This example is the Environment Agency Risk of Flooding from Rivers and Sea data combined with GP practice locations overlaid and dynamic risk category analysis displayed. Demonstrating a ‘mash up’ of open data to provide real benefits and potential emergency and saving capability!
- OS Opendata sets are available in the arconline open data sets including open map local.
- This world topographic map includes boundaries, cities, water features, physiographic features, parks, landmarks, transportation, and buildings.
- Based on the Ordnance Survey’s Open Data offerings, Esri UK have created basemaps and locators which can be used throughout the ArcGIS Platform and are available in the default basemap gallery
- Sharing is fun, sharing is powerful. Data can contribute to business statistics and OS OpenData / mapping can help you tell that story. Is it just government transparency? We think there’s more. We are excited to learn that OS Open Data is used globally and we are continually listening to and learning what our customers need and want. We want your feedback, we need to know what you need. As a Product Manager I live off of feedback, good or bad, to continually provide my backlog, enable me to prioritise what’s needed and why. For those of you who have provided feedback = thanks! - Let’s take a moment to consider what OS OpenData means for YOUR customers. Publish those crime stats so they connect well / sit comfortably over our OpenData backdrop maps, with a better chance to integrate more closely which in turn adds more value to you and your customers at that next level. Your data will be viewed and analysed….So, we need to know how from you what you need (you are publishers of OS OpenData) – we want to learn from you – It’s a good time to partake in the framework for open data as a whole. High level strategic conversations with publishers and customers alike. Also worth mentioning the forums at this point.
- An example of such collaboration is that of the OS Open Rivers project, produced in collaboration with the EA enabling a greater understanding and integration potential between the two parties.
