Prior to September 1953, courses designated by letter rather than number
(e.g., English A ) w ere non-credit. Courses numbered 1 through 99 w ere
primarily for undergraduate credit. Courses numbered 100 through 199
enrolled adv anced undergraduate and some graduate students. Courses
numbered 200 through 299 w ere for graduate students.
Since September 1953, the follow ing numbering system has been in effect:
001-049 Precollege and deficiency courses
050-099 Nondegree courses (e.g., agriculture short courses)
100-299 Low er-div ision courses normally scheduled for freshmen and
sophomores
300-499 Upper-div ision courses normally scheduled for juniors and
seniors
500-599 Dual-lev el courses that may be scheduled by juniors, seniors
and graduate students for graduate credits
600-699 Graduate-lev el courses. In certain circumstances, an
undergraduate student may take a 600-lev el course.
C R E D I T TYP E S
Regular Credit - A ll Purdue Univ ersity credit is reported in terms of semester
hours, w hether earned during a 16-w eek semester or a summer session.
Thesis Credit - A lthough thesis research courses (698 and 699) officially show
"0" in the CR column, a measure of the time the student dev oted to the thesis
research, compared to the time required for a normal course, is included in the
course title area.

Graduates earning baccalaureate degrees w ho rank in the top 10%
scholastically of the graduates in their school for that year, and w ho hav e a
minimum of 65 index hours in their graduation index, receiv e their degrees
WITH DISTINCTION. Of those students w ho qualify for WITH
DISTINCTION, the top three-tenths of the baccalaureate graduates hav ing
the highest graduation indexes are designated as graduating WITH HIGHEST
DISTINCTION, irrespectiv e of the schools from w hich they graduate.
Similar regulations apply for the determination of honors for students earning

SEM - Semester index, based upon all courses in w hich the student w as
enrolled that session and for w hich grade points w ere earned.
CUM - Cumulativ e index. It includes all grades earned w hile in an
undergraduate program prior to A ugust 1961 or w hile in a graduate program
prior to A ugust 1995.
GRD - Graduation index. For undergraduate students, it includes all grades
earned in the current curriculum plus grades earned in courses taken in a
prior curriculum w hich are being applied tow ard the current degree program.
For graduate students, it includes all grades earned in 500- and 600-lev el
courses plus grades earned in undergraduate courses being included in the
graduate Plan of Study. Grade entries not being included in the graduation
index are indicated w ith a minus sign ("-") betw een the subject abbrev iation
and course number.
S C H O LA S TI C S TA N D I N G
In the absence of any further qualifications of the term, a student is
considered to be in good standing unless he/she has been dismissed,
suspended, or scholastically dropped from the Univ ersity and not
readmitted.
S P E C I A L C R E D I T N O TA TI O N S
Students may be aw arded credit at Purdue Univ ersity by means other than
regular enrollment in and completion of a course. Beginning January 1979,
this "directed credit" is noted on the academic record as follow s:
BY EXA M - A w arded on the basis of achiev ement in a Purdue departmental
proficiency examination.
CEEB A P - A w arded on the basis of achiev ement in College Entrance
Examination Board A dv ance Placement tests.
CLEP CR - A w arded on the basis of achiev ement in the College Lev el
Examination Program.
CR ESTB - A w arded on the basis of CEEB M ath A chiev ement Test score or
Purdue Composite score.
DEPT CR - A w arded on the basis of substantially equiv alent experience,
successful completion of a more adv anced course, etc.
Prior to January 1979, all BY EXA M (for new students), CEEB A P, CR ESTB
and CLEP CR credit w as combined into the single notation CR ESTB.
TR A N S F E R C R E D I T
Course credits accepted in transfer from other institutions are listed under
the appropriate headings. For undergraduate students the course numbers
and titles reflect Purdue Univ ersity equiv alents, w ith the exception of
Indiana Univ ersity courses taken at the jointly-administered Purdue-Indiana
Univ ersity campuses in Indianapolis and Fort Wayne. With the exception of
Indiana Univ ersity credits at the jointly-administered campuses, credits
earned in the Technology Statew ide program and credits earned in certain
study-abroad programs, no grades are transferred and transfer credit hours
are not reflected in the cumulativ e totals.

It includes all grades earned w hile in an undergraduate program prior to A ugust 1961 or w hile in a graduate program prior to A ugust 1995. GRD - Graduation index. For undergraduate students, it includes all grades earned in the current curriculum plus grades earned in courses taken in a prior curriculum w hich are being applied tow ard the current degree program. For graduate students, it includes all grades earned in 500- and 600-lev el courses plus grades earned in undergraduate courses being included in the graduate Plan of Study. S C H O LA S TI C S TA N D I N G In the absence of any further qualifications of the term, a student is considered to be in good standing unless he/she has been dismissed, suspended, or scholastically dropped from the Univ ersity and not readmitted.
