Youth Leadership
Aston Manor Academy
Between November and January 2016 Year five 12 and five Year 13 students
from Aston Manor Academy in Birmingham, UK participated in an Emerge
Leadership ‘Youth Leadership Programme’ as part of the schools enrichment
activity for students.
The leadership programme is intentionally set at the standard that students
might expect to experience in their first or second year of Uni. The aim of the
programme was for the students to develop their soft skills whilst providing
them with an experience that will build their confidence and prepare them for
life after 6th form whether they choose to go to university or into the world of
work.
Through our partnership with KPMG students had the unique opportunity to to
hold some of the sessions in their new offices at 1 Snowhill in Birmingham City
centre.
Students worked in two separate
teams on a ‘leadership venture’
during the course of the programme.
Their brief was “This is an
opportunity to do what you've always
meant to do but never found time for.
An opportunity to bring a fresh
approach to a problem you see in
your community, your country, the
world. To be daring. To be bold. To
take some risks.”

They came up with their own venture idea focussing around a need or a cause
that was personal to them.
During the course of the 6 week programme students had the opportunity to
meet some of Birmingham’s business leaders and politicians and hear their
stories and receive advice as to how they could develop their leadership venture
ideas. At the end of the program students presented their final venture ideas to
Councillor Kerry Jenkins, the Youth Champion for Birmingham City Council.
The guest speakers included:
Councillor Wasim Zaffar
Justice Williams MBE
Councillor Sharon Thompson
Rachel Toussaint (Solicitor)
