2. BRIEF RESUME
Professor Erick Otieno Nyambedha has conducted research among children living along the fish
landing beaches of Lake Victoria basin and published numerous peer reviewed scientific papers
and book chapters on issues of vulnerable children, widows and the elderly in the era of AIDS in
Western Kenya since 1998. In addition, he has extensive experience in working with donor
funded projects in Kenya. Some of the donors he has worked with in Kenya as either a lead
researcher or consultant include; DANIDA, UNFPA/AMREF/TSF, UNICEF, USAID, WHO,
Help Age International, where he has worked on issues of OVC, Sex workers and HIV/AIDS in
Kenya, Social protection for widows, orphans and vulnerable children, accessibility to health
services by the low socio-economic groups in Kenya. He has presented several papers within the
regional and international academic conferences and seminars on the topic of children and
HIV/AIDS in Luo community. He was part of the Commonwealth experts’ delegates’ workshop
on HIV/AIDS and older persons, that drafted the VALLETTA DECLARATION ON HIV/AIDS
that was adopted by the Commonwealth Heads of Government Summit in Malta in November,
2005. The workshop was organised by the International Institute on Ageing and the HELP THE
AGED, International. He has recently conducted extensive research on social protection
vulnerable populations including research with UNICEF on informal social protection
mechanism for orphans and vulnerable children (OVC) and the political economy of the uptake
of social protection programmes in Kenya with special emphasis on cash transfer programmes.
Professor Nyambedha has obtained two academic awards. In 1998, he was awarded a German
Academic Exchange Service (DAAD) scholarship to study MA in Anthropology at the
University of Nairobi. In 2003, he was awarded a grant by the Danish Council for Research in
Developing countries (RUF) to study PhD in Anthropology at the University of Copenhagen,
Denmark. He further completed an online course on Human Participants Protection
Education for Research Teams sponsored by the National Institutes of Health (NIH) in 2006.
In 2009, Professor Nyambedha was selected for the award of Man of the Year by the
American Biographical Institute (ABI) in recognition of his work on the impact of HIV/AIDS
on orphans and vulnerable children (OVC). Selected to appear in the MAQUIS book of WHO is
WHO in the year 2012 recognition of his work on OVC.
He has participated in various short courses including a diploma course in health research
methodology at the Institute of Health Research and Development formerly Danish Bilharziasis
Laboratory, (DBL in Denmark), a multidisciplinary course in qualitative methods in
International Health Research, at the Institute of International Health, University of Copenhagen
and also participated in a short course on Ethics and Health Research in low income societies at
the Institute of International health, University of Copenhagen. He has recently attended a short
course of the use of mixed methods in social science research organised by Organisation for
Social Science Research in Africa (OSSREA) in Dar-Es Salaam in Tanzania. As an
anthropologist, Professor Nyambedha has considerable strength in the application of qualitative
methods of data collection, analysis and report writing. He is also trained in quantitative
methodologies of field research, particularly in health research.

4. CONSULTANCY WORK
1/03/2014- 8/12/2015 Team Leader (Anthropologist) in the Social Impact assessment of the
Impact of Kenya Coastal Development Project (KCDP) on the Vulnerable
and Marginalized Communities in the six counties of the Kenyan Coast
and the Development of Vulnerable and Marginalized Peoples Plans
(VMPPs) for the Indigenous Communities living in the project area in
Kenyan Coastal Region. The project is funded by the World Bank through
Kenya Marine and Fisheries Institute (KEMFRI).
06/05/14-17/06/14 Part of European Union (EU) mission for Mid Term Review of the Kenya
Rural Development Programme (KRDP) funded by the EU. The final
report has been completed and submitted to EU after receiving final
comments.
6/12/13- 20/01/14 Development of three policy briefs for HelpAge Kenya on Social
Protection Mechanisms and HIV/AIDS among the elderly people in
Kenya. The three policy briefs were successfully submitted to HelpAge
Kenya and the consultancy successfully closed.
10/02/2013-13/04/2013 USAID/University Research Company (URC) - Consultancy to carry
Out situational analysis of the Psychosocial Support Services (PSS) to
Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) and produce a report to help
develop national guidelines for the provision of psychosocial support
among the orphans and vulnerable children in Kenya. This was done first
through a desk review of internationally accepted guidelines for provision
of PSS and field visits to conduct interviews with service providers and
beneficiaries. The results of this review are currently being used to
develop Kenya National Guidelines on the provision of Psychosocial
Support to Vulnerable Children.
4/06/2012-28/12/2012World Bank/ Ministry of Public Health and Sanitation –Development
Of a Vulnerable and Marginalised Peoples Plans (VMPPs) for Kenya
Health Support Project (KHSSP), Total War Against AIDS (TOWA) and
East African Public Health Laboratory Network (EAPHLN). Research
was undertaken among the 14 out of 22 VMG communities in Kenya as
defined in the new constitution.

10/10/10-11/12/10 USAID/University Research Company (URC): Consultancy to carry
out an Evaluation/Situational Analysis of the quality of services provided
to the Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC) by Non-governmental
organisations (NGOs) in Kenya, develop minimum standards for

5. improving OVC services in Kenya and to present the report to a
stakeholders workshop for validation. The results of this situational
analysis which was done first by way of desk review to help develop
research tools which were then used to collect empirical data were used by
USAID to develop Minimum Service Standards for the provision of
services to OVC in Kenya. The standards were successfully piloted and
have been adopted by the department of children in Kenya for nationwide
programming.
26/04/09- 30/10/09 TSF AMREF/UNFPA: Consultancy to carry out the Kenya National
Situation analysis on HIV/AIDS among sex workers and their clients and
to produce a report with clear programmatic recommendations to National
AIDS Control Council (NACC) to guide the involvement of sex workers
in the national HIV/AIDS response mechanisms and to present the final
report to the stakeholders and the Technical Working Group (TWG) on
sex work and HIV/AIDS in Kenya.
10/11/08-8/12/08 USAID/Health Policy Initiative: Consultancy on the strengthening of the
Institution of the Luo Council of Elders (LCE) to help advocate for the
Property rights of the widows and orphans in Luo Nyanza. Duties and
Responsibilities included mobilisation and facilitation of workshops in
Luo Nyanza involving various stakeholders to sensitize them on the
property rights within the Luo culture and modern law.
07/10/08-30/11/08 UNICEF Eastern and Southern African (ESA) Addis Ababa Country
Office, Consultancy to conceive and write a book chapter via scoping desk
review on informal social protection mechanisms for OVC in Eastern and
Southern Africa (ESA) and to explore the implications of these
mechanisms for formal protection policy for orphans and Vulnerable
children in Africa. The chapter has been published in a UNICEF book on
Social Protection Policy for Orphans and Vulnerable children in Africa by
Routledge.
17/12/07-15/04/08 WHO/Institute of Tropical Medicine, Antwerp, Belgium/Medical
Research Centre, Glasgow, UK. Scoping desk review on the
relationships between adolescents and parents or older caretakers in East
Africa. Wrote a paper on “Relationships between children/adolescents and
relatives of older generations in East Africa: A systematic review”. This
desk review was used by the by WHO/Institute of Tropical Medicine and
Medical Research Centre in Glasgow UK to write a proposal on
Challenges of parenting for adolescents in East Africa.

July 2015 to present Research on “Inclusive Growth through Social Protection in Maternal
Health Programs in Kenya” (SPIKE). A comparison of cost-effectiveness
of Maternal Voucher System and Free Maternity Services in Kenya. This
two year study is being conducted in a partnership involving Maseno
University, Ministry of Health, Department of Health Policy, Planning and
Healthcare Financing in Kenya and The Swiss Tropical and Public Health
Institute (STPHI) within University of Basel and Department of
Anthropology at the University of Bern both in Switzerland. The research
is supported by the Netherlands Development Organization under the
INCLUDE PLATFORM for Social Protection programs (WOTRO).

Jan 2014 to 2015 Research on Political economy of the uptake of social protection
programmes in Kenya. The study was conducted in seven counties in
Kenya to investigate the political economy of the uptake of cash transfer
programmes for Orphans and Vulnerable Children (OVC-CT), Cash
Transfer for the older people (OPCT) and Cash Transfer for people with
severe disability. The research is funded by Partnership for African Social
and Governance Research (PASGR) which is a UKaid funded project. The
