Change
Introduction: The history of the world is the history of change, for change is with us all
the time. In some eras, change comes slowly. In others, such as today, it comes at a
blindingly rapid pace. That's why every one of us needs to understand the nature of
change and manage it for our own survival.

Don’t be like the frog that fails to react to his surroundings

Change has always meant that, if you cling on to
old ways of seeing and doing, in time your ideas
will no longer be relevant. In business terms, your
products and services will no longer be wanted
and you will fail to thrive. It is like the species of
frog, that, when placed in a bowl of water that is
slowly heated, fails to react and is boiled alive.

See the opportunities in change
Stable environmental climates are preferred by
most organizations. There is greater control and
the future can be predicted with more certainty.
In unstable times, these don't work. Things
change too fast. Instead, you need flexible
structures, people who can learn, and the ability
to see the opportunities thrown up by change.

The drive to comfort comes from discomfort
3. GET USED
TO
DISCOMFORT
Constant change creates a climate of chaos where
the old certainties no longer exist. For
organisations, as well as individuals, it means
going through periods of discomfort and
insecurity. Jack Welch knew this when he was
head of GEC. He said, "Willingness to change is a
strength, even if it means plunging parts of the
organisation into total confusion for a while."

Looking ahead to the Promised Land
In times of change, people look to their leaders to
tell them that things will work out especially
when the old ways have gone and the new ways
haven’t yet been clarified. That's why, in periods
of transition, you need people with masterful
communication skills. It's like Moses leading the
children of Israel into the Promised Land. The
unwanted state has gone but the new one hasn’t
yet arrived.

THINKING
Some organisations are better prepared for
change than others. If your organisation operates
from the top down, with only its leaders being
able to initiate and manage change, then the
outlook is bleak. But if your organisation listens to
all its people and allows them to invest in the
change through their thinking and commitment,
it will survive transition and come out on top.

Look for the good in the new
Change is most difficult for those who are
invested in the past and present. But managing
change is about managing the future. You have to
make room for the new by discarding the old.
Woody Allen joked, "My father worked for the
same firm for 12 years. They replaced him with a
gadget this big. It does everything that my father
does, only much better. The depressing thing is,
my mother ran out and bought one."

when President of Columbia University, received
a deputation of students asking for a pathway
across the grass.
"Why do they walk there?" he asked.
"It's the easiest way to the hall," came the reply.
"Well, if that's the way they're going to go, then
cut a pathway there," he said.
