2. GEO-TEXTILE
Definition:
‘Geotextile’ can be separated into two terms, ‘geo’ and
‘textile’. The word ‘geo’ comes from the Greek meaning
‘earth’, so geotextiles can be defined as the permeable
textile materials that are used in combination with soil
or any other civil engineering material. Geo textile is a
branch of technical textile.
3. According to The Textile Institute,
“permeable textile material used for
filtration, drainage, separation,
reinforcement and stabilization purposes
as an integral part of civil engineering
structures of earth, rock or other
constructional materials”.
6. Types of Geotextile:
Geotextiles are divided into 3 categories on
the basis of the way they are prepared :
1. Woven Fabric Geotextiles
2. Non-Woven Geotextiles
3. Knitted Geotextiles
7. 1. Woven Fabric Geotextiles
Commonly found geotextiles are of the woven type
and are manufactured by adopting the techniques
which are similar to weaving usual clothing textiles.
These types of textiles perform the function of
separation and increase the strength of the soil. As
the yarn strength of their warp is much higher, they
have more tensile strength. As a result, it is able to
take much more load.
8. 2. Non-Woven Geotextiles
In case of nonwoven geotextiles, tensile strength
is not very high, but their Separation, Drainage
and Filtration ability is better than others. Non-
woven geo textiles are permeable geosynthetics,
usually made by synthetic fibers. The bonding of
fibers is done using thermal, chemical or
mechanical techniques or a combination of
techniques.
9. 3. Knitted Geotextiles:
These types of textiles have good flexibility and are
economically profitable. Although its use is less, but the
demand for “Drainage and Soil Erosion Control” is
increasing day by day. Knitted geotextiles are
manufactured by the process of interlocking a series of
loops of yarn together. All of the knitted geosynthetics
are formed by using the knitting technique in
conjunction with some other method of geosynthetics
manufacture, such as weaving.
10. Application of Geo-Textiles:
Civil Engineering Construction.
Hydraulic Engineering.
Embankment Reinforcement.
Tunnel Construction.
Land Filling.
Ground Water Protection.
Agricultural purpose.
17. Application of geo-textile in Bangladesh:
1. Jamuna river bank administration.
2. Soil erosion control and slop stability on highways.
3. Lots of dam.
4. Tista Barrage.
5. Teknaf coastal work.
6. Bridge construction.
7. Matarbari coal energy plant barrage.
8. Padma bridge project.
20. A recent study by Grand View Research Inc. said
that the global market of geotextiles is worth
$8.24 billion with countries in the Asia-Pacific
being the biggest geotextile consumers of this
market. As per IndustryArc, in 2019 the largest
share with 47% in Geotextile Market is held by
The Asia Pacific (APAC).
21. According to Fortune Business insights, geotextile
market size was USD 9,014.2 million in 2020 and
is projected to reach USD 16,212.5 million by
2028 exhibiting a CAGR of 7.7% during the
forecast period. China is expected to be the major
market for geotextiles in the region.
22. Bangladesh a low-lying, mainly riverine country
with a coastline of 580 km (360 mi) on the northern
littoral of the Bay of Bengal. Bangladesh alone, has
a demand of Tk10-12 billion per year.
Now there are seven local companies that meet 95
percent of the country's demand for non-woven
geotextiles.
23. Conclusion:
Geo-textiles are earth saver. It minimize soil erosion, promote life
length of many architecture. Geo-textile used to make barrage which
protect human habitation from the tidal bore and flood.
PET staple fibre is manufactured from recycling PET bottles. It reduces
plastic waste and emits less carbon. Geo-textiles save almost 50% of
raw material cost in many civil engineering field.
As Geo-textile occupy a significant market share in technical textile
with a healthy growth rate, industrialist should pay more attention in
this sector to enlarge production capacity.
