1. 2. how does your media product represent particular social
groups?
Age
My magazine is aimed at 11-18 year olds as this is
the main age range that would be interested in the
genre I have made the magazine, as well as the
kinds of artists/bands I have added. I decided the
target audience before the construction of my
magazine of which I came to a conclusion from the
research I had done, and throughout the making of
my magazine, I have taken into consideration of my
target audience and fitted the magazine around
what would appeal to the people within the age
range of 11-18 years old.
By using specific features that I think would attract
my target audience, it would be more effective for
my magazine to be what they buy. The kind of
features I have used to do so are the colour
scheme. I have used teal, pink, yellow and purple. I
have used limited pink because stereotypically,
pink is a feminine colour. To balance this out, I
have used other colours like yellow and teal for my
magazine to be able to also attract boys as well as
girls, as my target audience isn’t just towards girls,
which does link into age because they are bright ad vibrant which is what young
people are attracted to as it links to excitement.
Because of the types of bands/artists used in my magazine, people between the age
of 11-18 would most likely to want to read about them. This is because the
bands/artists are of a similar age, the band ‘Vision’ being sixteen year olds. This is
effective because the target audience could be able to relate to the being of a similar
age and this is why I think anybody younger or older may not be attracted to this
magazine as they may feel it is too grown up/too childish for them.
Gender
I think that my magazine would appeal to both
genders because of the features in my magazine
that I have used. The main band of my magazine
are a mix of boys and girls therefore both
genders of my target audience could relate to
them in some way. Also, which I have previously
spoken about, the colour scheme is attracting
both genders as although there is pink which
mainly a feminine colour is, I have used yellows
and blues to allow both genders to be appealed
to the magazine. The content used in the
2. magazine also would enable both females and males to relate to the people for
example in my main article; it is about them getting their dream at a young age,
therefore the things that the people say when interviewing them could inspire the
young audience and maybe help people with low self-esteem gain more confidence.
My pop magazine portrays a mixture of multi-ethnic readers. Also the 11-18 year old
category tend to get money off parents or a part time job for example, and would
therefore be wanting to spend their money on entertainment like concert tickets
and trendy clothes. My target audience would most likely by using social networking
websites such as twitter and Facebook, and this makes them more interactive and
uses their spare time surfing the internet. My target audience I would think would be
aspiring people who desires status and symbols such as well-paid jobs and expensive
clothes. I believe aspirers who want to be succeeders would by my magazine as a
way to get advice, tips or learn methods to how to be successful in life but also to
live your life to the fullest as you are young.
The images are taken of both males and females within the 11-18 age group, and
therefore people would buy my magazine because the ‘celebrity’ on the front cover
is of the same group to them and is going through the same difficulties at this young
age such as puberty. This would allow them to relate to the celebrities and the
exclusive interview would give them advice on how they can overcome their
struggles for example school work.
The fonts I have used were meant to be simplistic, bold and basic. This is to help
reach out to a wider audience. Also the colour scheme appeals to both genders as it
is not bright pink which would stereotypically appeal to females however I have in
cooperated pink to appeal to some females.
My magazine also represents particular social groups, as it acts as a form of
escapism. Where young people can rewind and relax from showers of homework
and the stress of school and peer pressure. By reading the stories of success in the
magazine, it would aspire people to think how they could reach their dreams as the
people in the magazine have worked hard to get to where they are now. This shows
that people can change their lifestyles to suit their needs in terms of how they want
society to seem them and this helps portray that anything is possible and ‘Vision’
could help give advice and support the young aspirers who’s self-esteem is low and
therefore help them build up their confidence and make their first big steps in the
world of the music industry.
