Design Trend 2015: Copper
By Emily Georgiou • Posted in Style inspiration
In 2014 copper made a huge resurgence in interior design and there really is no
stopping it as the trend continues into 2015. Copper is and has been the metal of choice
favoured in architectural and interior design through the centuries and has often been
used for a number of industrial !xtures.
The versatility of copper allows the trend to transcend and the use of it is almost
unlimited in the home. It is unusual for such a trend to be able to be used in almost
every room of the house, from the beautiful traditional copper bath tubs, the trendy
contemporary pendant lighting to cutlery and even furniture; the warming glow of
copper can immediately change the atmosphere of a room.
As copper can have such dramatic e"ect within a room it is usually used as
small statement pieces because it by far one of the easiest ways to
incorporate copper into a design scheme. It works perfectly alongside natural
materials such as wood and bare brick to create a rustic or modern loft look.
Alternatively it looks great against bold colours and one of the hottest colours
for this season is the moody indigo blue. Copper accents will really pop
against such a striking colour and the overall look will exude luxuriousness
and sophistication. Small statement pieces may not be your cup of tea in
which case a bolder approach may be needed.
Copper can look superb on a larger scale and wall coverings or panels are a
fantastic way to showcase its spectacular rosy hue. The re#ective quality of
copper will bounce light around the room creating a warm ambience. If
treated correctly a copper worktop can be the most fabulous industrial

statement piece within your kitchen or cabinet doors covered in copper
sheeting would set your hub of the home apart from the run of the mill !tted
kitchens. It is such an adaptable metal and can be applied in all sorts of ways
if you get creative!
Copper can come in a high shine !nish or a brushed matte e"ect depending
on the look you are hoping to achieve within your space. The highly polished
copper is beautiful and has a very high end appeal. Brushed copper is a more
muted version and subtly blends into its surroundings.
Over time copper can tarnish, and although this can be seen as part of the
natural evolution of the product some people !nd that it can lose its appeal.
To stop this happening you can apply various !nishes to the metal such as
protective lacquers to prevent the copper from oxidising into a green-blue
shade. Copper is a trend that will continue to thrive because of its versatility
and aesthetic appeal so don’t be afraid to try introducing it into your home.
