Mario and Sonic, Nintendo and Sega have battled since 1985, where Nintendo in brought out the NES and 1986 Sega brought out the Master system . Nintendo’s first game was ‘Donkey Kong’ which was an arcade game in 1981 where Mario was formally known as ‘jump man’ and had to jump over barrels thrown at him it was only later on around 1989 where ‘super Mario land’ was released was ‘jump man’ then nicknamed ‘Mario’. In August 1990 Sega made their first dig at Nintendo ‘Genesis does what Nintendon’t’, which was the beginning of the long battle between the two companies. November 1990 Nintendo released the SNES and ‘Super Mario world’ game which was a massive hit selling Nintendo’s initial stock of 300,000 units selling out within a few hours. In June 1991 Sega created their killer app ‘Sonic the hedgehog’ hoping that while Mario appealed to a younger audience Sonic would appeal to teenagers and slightly older kids. Summer 1991 Sega tried to release a game for the handheld market with more Nintendo mocking adverts. It was up until 2001 where Sega declared after its failure at the Dreamcast that it would stop making consoles and concentrate on making third party games for Nintendo, Sony and Microsoft instead. Sega and Nintendo did make a truce and the game ‘Sonic Advance’ came out on the Nintendo Game boy advance handheld console. Short History between Mario and Sonic Nintendo and Sega having this history of fighting meant that the Mario and Sonic Olympic games 2007 came as exciting news for critics, fans and those who had been brought up within the Nintendo and Sega war as most couldn’t believe the collaboration. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=SZ7Oplzvcuk&feature=related
