2. What type of licence do I need?
To hire a car in the USA
you must have a Full
valid driving licence from
your country of
residence.
A provisional licence is
not acceptable.
3. How long must I have held my licence?
You must have held your licence for a minimum of 1 year to
hire from:
● Budget
● Dollar
● Thrifty
Our prepaid rental vouchers with Alamo & National have no
minimum period requirement.
4. Do I need both parts of my licence?
From June 8th 2015 the paper counterpart of a
UK photo ID driving licence ceases to have
legal status. A UK driving licence will be either
a paper licence issued prior to 1998 or the
photo ID licence. This will be all you will need to
collect your car hire in the USA from
08/06/2015.
5. Help, I can not find my licence!
Photocopies or faxed copies of driving licences
(even from the DVLA) will not be accepted -
you must present the original documents.
If you really cannot find them, please let us
know and we may be able to change the rental
to the name of someone else in your party.
6. What about points on my licence?
If you can legally drive in your country of
residence, then you can drive in the USA.
If you have a current ban at your time of travel, you
will not be able to drive in the USA.
7. My driving licence is not in English
Alamo and National, will accept any licence written
in a Roman Alphabet.
Budget, Dollar and Thrifty will accept any licence
that is recognisable as a driving licence - if not an
International Driving Permit will be needed.
8. Do I need an IDP in Florida?
As long as you fulfill the requirements on the
previous slide you will not need an
International Driving Permit to drive a hire car
in Florida.
Historical note: There was a brief requirement in 2013 for
IDP’s, this law was rescinded in April 2013 - an IDP is not
required.
