Refugee Academy presenteert:
18:00 BOOST TOOST (borrel)

Refugee Academy presents:
Building the inclusive city –Experimental spaces for connection between
residents and newcomers
Refugee Academy in collaboration with BOOST
In cities with great diversity, such as Amsterdam, building social inclusion is a crucial challenge. How do we
create a city in which everyone gets the opportunity to work on a meaningful future and to positively
contribute to the environment? How can we build social and physical spaces in which people from diverse
social contexts are able to meet each other, and in which unorthodox connections can be initiated and
developed? In the past years, together with growing attention to refugees, these continuing challenges have
sparked many initiatives that are committed to creating meeting spaces for ‘old’ and ‘new’ residents in
different areas and neighbourhoods. These experimental spaces have the potential to contribute to the future
of the inclusive city.
In this meeting, we would like to give spatial context to the big abstract society we live in, and explore how
processes of inclusion are created and given shape on the ground. BOOST Amsterdam is a bottom-up initiative
that is involved in these processes. How are ‘in-between spaces’ created, in which refugees are not solely
approached as receivers of help, but instead as residents who can contribute something to the
neighbourhood? What conditions need to be fulfilled? And what can we learn from this about inclusion and
integration in the city and in society as a whole?
You are cordially invited to think along and join the conversation about these and other questions on Friday 22
June, between 2.45pm and 6:00pm. The meeting will take place at BOOST. Although the meeting will be held
mainly in Dutch, those who would like to contribute in English are welcome as well. We shall do our best
accommodate those who have difficulties with understanding Dutch.
The programme will be as follows:
2:45pm - Walk in
3:00pm - Opening
3:15pm - Introduction by Halleh Ghorashi
Creating space and forging connections in de context of difference: The idea of an 'in-between space'
3:35pm - Interactive conversation with those involved in BOOST:
Everyday experience of 'in-between space.' How do the different people involved experience the
dynamics of inclusion, and how does an initiative such as BOOST change and transform over time?
4:30pm - Break
4:50pm - Discussion with the public
What can we learn from BOOST about building inclusive urban spaces?
5:45pm Wrap-up
6:00pm BOOST TOOST (drinks and snacks)
We would like to know who wants to come, so please register for this meeting by filling in the application form
