Beudene was founded in 1998 by
Beulah van Aswegen, a qualified
occupational therapist who worked
in America for 5 years and identified
the needs of parents with children
with disabilities. She saw the need
for a safe, loving environment where
these children can be stimulated and
taken care of while their parents are
at work.
Beudene started out with 4 children
and today after 18 years, takes care
of 55 -70 children on a daily basis.

10. The growing need for specialized care
• The need for a safe and loving day-care facility
exceeds the funding available for the running
expenses of this service to the community.
• There is a growing need for this special care to the
disabled, especially to those who have reached
adulthood. Specialized schools only take the
disabled until the age of 18 years. Their need for
care and stimulation goes beyond the age of 18
years.
• The number of children with Autism is rising.
• Beudene is unique in the sense that it offers a
friendly, interactive environment where the
disabled share in responsibilities and daily chores,
far removed from a clinical approach.

• Domani Builders also partnered with the project and soon
construction was underway.
• The new classroom was occupied on the 21st of August 2015!

• Thanks to Vodacom Change the World Programme of
2015/2016 , Beudene is now able to provide specialized
care for learners with Autism as Cindy van Zyl, an
educational therapist has given up her daily job for a year
to help make a difference in the lives of the learners with
Autism at Beudene.
• Through this initiative Vodacom aimed to mobilize skilled
South African individuals to give up their daily jobs to
work for a non-profit organisation (NPO) of their choice
and get paid a salary.
• Today 1 out of every 50 children is born and diagnosed
on the Autistic disorder spectrum, (10 years ago it was 1
out of 5000!)
• This project with Vodacom ends June 2016. The
children with autism at Beudene rose from 6 to 20,
therefore Cindy is going nowhere!
