in preventing pollution
        of Lakes
Bangalore Valley System

 Well defined valleys

   – 4 Major valleys
        Koramangala
        Challaghatta
        Hebbal
        Vrishabhavathi
   – Minor valleys

BANGALORE’S CASCADING LAKES
          SERIES
Reasons for pollution of Lakes

 Un planned growth of city
 Un sewered pockets such as slums and erstwhile CMC areas
 Damage of main sewers
 Blockages and overflows in the sewer system
 Direct letting out of raw wastewater into storm water
drainage system from un-sewered as well as sewered pockets
 Lack of adequate infrastructure facilities
 Dumping of solid waste within the drainage zones
Sewerage management in Bangalore

                      Facts
 Total sewage generated in Bangalore – 1000 MLD
 Sewerage connections – 8 Lakh
 Sewerage network
   Laterals (< 300 mm dia) – 3367 Kms
   Trunk Sewers (>300 mm dia) – 302 Kms
 Number of plants – 14
 Sewage treatment capacity – 721 MLD
 Average Present treatment – 453 MLD
Measures for abating Lake Pollution

1) Replacement/ Rehabilitation/ Up gradation of
old sewerage net work – Laterals and Trunk
   sewers in core city
2) Creation of New Sewerage Net Work
      Erstwhile CMC area – 2300 Kms
      110 Villages – 2000 Kms
                       Total – 4300 Kms
3) Creation of Additional Treatment capacity to
treat wastewater produced in the new areas
