The cloud services companies of all sizes…The cloud is for everyone. The cloud is a democracy
- Marc Benioff, founder, chairman and CEO of salesforce.com
“Every kid coming out of Harvard, every kid coming out of school now thinks he can be the next Mark Zuckerberg,
and with these new technologies like cloud computing, he actually has a shot.”
- Marc Andreessen, Board Member of Facebook

Predicted Annual Growth: “ Cloud computing continues to grow at rates much higher than IT spending generally.
Growth in cloud services is being driven by new IT computing scenarios being deployed using cloud models, as
well as the migration of traditional IT services to cloud service alternatives.”
- Ed Anderson, research director at Gartner
Growth of cloud:
In 2014, businesses in the US alone will spend more than $13 billion on cloud computing and managed hosting services
In 2015, end user spending on cloud services could be more than $180 billion. Add this to your bottom line!
In 2016, cloud computing will become the bulk of new IT spend. Get to new market now!
In 2017, nearly half of large enterprises will have hybrid cloud deployments

“They don't call it the Internet anymore, they call it cloud
computing. I'm no longer resisting the name. Call it what
you want
- Larry Ellison, chairman, Oracle
“Computing is kind of a mess. Your computer doesn't
know where you are. It doesn't know what you're doing.
It doesn't know what you know“
– Larry Page, Google

Cloud Introduction
According to Forrester, Cloud Computing is:
“A form of standardized IT-based capability — such as Internet-based services, software, or IT infrastructure - offered
by a service provider that is accessible via Internet protocols from any computer, is always available and scales
automatically to adjust to demand, is either pay-per-use or advertising-based, has Web- or programmatic-based
control interfaces, and enables full customer self-service.”

Cloud Introduction
According to NIST, Cloud Computing is:
“Cloud computing is a model for enabling convenient, on-demand network access to a shared pool of
configurable computing resources (e.g., networks, servers, storage, applications, and services) that can be
rapidly provisioned and released with minimal management effort or service provider interaction. This cloud
model promotes availability and is composed of five essential characteristics, three service models, and four
deployment models.” - (NIST)

Amazon Cloud Growth
2004 2014
amazon.com was introduced Amazon web services were introduced
$7B+ retail business Everyday, AWS adds enough
8000+ employees Server capacity to power that
A whole lot of services Entire $7B enterprise

1. The user’s DNS requests are served by Amazon Route 53, a highly available DNS service. Network traffic is
routed to Infrastructure running in Amazon Web Services
2. Static, streaming, and dynamic content is delivered by Amazon CloudFront, a global network of edge locations.
Requests are automatically routed to the nearest edge location, so content is delivered with the best possible
performance
3. Resources and static content used by the web application are stored on Amazon Simple Storage Service, a
highly durable storage Infrastructure designed for mission-critical and primary data storage
4. HTTP requests are first handled by Elastic Load Balancing, which automatically distributes incoming application
traffic among multiple Amazon Elastic Compute Cloud(EC2) instances across Availability Zones(Azs). It enables
even greater fault tolerance in your applications seamlessly providing the amount of load balancing capacity
needed in response to incoming application traffic

AWS Reference Architecture
5. Web Servers and application servers are deployed on Amazon EC2 Instances. Most organization will select an
Amazon Machine Image(AMI) and then customize it to their needs. This custom AMI will then become the
starting point for future web development
6. Web servers and application servers are deployed in an Auto Scaling group. Auto Scaling automatically adjusts
your capability up and down according to conditions you define. With Auto Scaling, you can ensure that the
number of Amazon EC2 instances you are using increases seamlessly during demand spikes to maintain
performance and decreases automatically during demand to minimize costs
7. To provide high availability, the relational database that contains application’s data is hosted redundantly on a
multi-AZ(multiple Availability Zones-zones A and B here) deployment of Amazon Relational Database
Service(Amazon RDS)
