PLEASE STAND FOR THE READING OF GOD’S WORD

Turn to you neighbor and say, “Boy you needed that!”
Verses 1-5 and 11 & 12 point out some problems that the church was experiencing at this time.
James 4:1 What causes quarrels and what causes fights among you? Is it not this, that your passions are at war within you?
The second question is rhetorical and answers the first I believe.
Quarrels- military campaign. Long protracted. Ongoing conflict
Conflicts- individual battles. Disagreements between individuals
Paul called them factions within the church
Passons, Pleasures- This same word is repeated in verse 3. From this Greek word we get the English term “hedonism,” which is a passion for self gratification, pleasure, or position at any cost!
At war- Soldiering. We get our word strategy
Within you-“members” may refer to the body of Christ, the Church. It is uncertain whether the warning is (1) internal (fallen nature); (2) external (problem in the church); or (3) both
You desire and do not have, so you murder. You covet and cannot obtain, so you fight and quarrel. You do not have, because you do not ask.
You ask and do not receive, because you ask wrongly, to spend it on your passions.
Unfulfilled desire Murder
Mark 7:21–23 For from within, out of the heart of man, come evil thoughts, sexual immorality, theft, murder, adultery, 22 coveting, wickedness, deceit, sensuality, envy, slander, pride, foolishness. 23 All these evil things come from within, and they defile a person.”
1 John 3:15 Everyone who hates his brother is a murderer, and you know that no murderer has eternal life abiding in him.
Crave Full scale war
You have a burning desire to possess something. You will do whatever it takes including burn things to the ground.
Selfish prayers Unanswerable
Psalm 66:18 If I had cherished iniquity in my heart, the Lord would not have listened.
The fighting is not just attitudes and desires. Let’s jump down to verse 11. Do not speak evil against one another, brothers….Do you suppose that if there is carnal warfare going on in a church that there just might be evil talk?
Do not speak evil against one another, brothers. The one who speaks against a brother or judges his brother, speaks
evil against the law and judges the law. But if you judge the law, you are not a doer of the law but a judge.
From the abundance of the heart the mouths speaks
Notice the two- speaking evil and Judging.
Lying- untruths sometimes called my truth
Gossip- repeating the story
Slander- damage to the reputation
Grumble- complaint in general, Moses
Quarrelling- disagreements over who’s right
You aren’t the Judge! Who died and made you king?
Not a doer- talkers are seldom doers. Grumblers and complainers
Judge the Law- Law of Liberty, law of Christ, all law. I know better and you are wrong!
Judgement on yourself
James 5:9 (ESV) Do not grumble against one another, brothers, so that you may not be judged; behold, the Judge is standing at the door.
You adulterous people! Do you not know that friendship with the world is enmity with God? Therefore whoever
wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself an enemy of God.
Adultery- We are the bride of Christ. Israel was God’s wife. Breaking a covenant relationship. Unfaithful to God
World System- friendship with the world. Friendship in the Greek means to love or have affection for. An emotional attitude
Kingdom System (enmity) an enemy of God
Don’t want to be at war with Him
…whoever wishes to be a friend of the world makes himself God’s enemy.
1 John 2:15–17 Do not love the world or the things in the world. If anyone loves the world, the love of the Father is not in him. 16 For all that is in the world—the desires of the flesh and the desires of the eyes and pride of life—is not from the Father but is from the world. 17 And the world is passing away along with its desires, but whoever does the will of God abides forever.
Or do you suppose it is to no purpose that the Scripture says, “He yearns jealously over the spirit that he has made to
dwell in us”? But he gives more grace. Therefore it says, “God opposes the proud but gives grace to the humble.”
God breathed our soul into us (creation story)
His essence- creates the indestructible soul
Exclusive relation on the spiritual level through grace
Pride of life. My accomplishments. My connections. I’m better. Friendship with the word
Humbly accept the grace of God. Rejecting the adulterous relationship with the world
James 4:7 Submit yourselves therefore to God. Resist the devil, and he will flee from you.
Get this in the right order!
Submit to arrange in a military fashion under the command of a leader
Heart- make yourself a servant. To God and Others. Seek to exalt God only. End your love affair with the world.
Head- your way of thinking. Biblical thinking. Mind of Christ. Be not conformed to the pattern of this world but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.
Hands- What you do. Faith w/o works is dead
Habits- Drop the old ones. Develop the renewed ones
Submit to God- James If you’re a doer of the word it’s easier to resist the temptation to do wrong.
Be firm in your faith- Peter
Don’t give opportunity- Paul
The Word of God- Jesus
Draw near to God, and he will draw near to you. Cleanse your hands, you sinners, and purify your hearts, you double-minded.
Actively Seek Relationship- Doer of the word. Discipleship, fellowship, ministry
Put off old habits- the world system, questionable activities,
Hebrews 12:1–2 let us also lay aside every weight, and sin which clings so closely, and let us run with endurance the race that is set before us, 2 looking to Jesus, the founder and perfecter of our faith,
Cooperate with the Holy Spirit- purify your heart is work the Spirit does. We can join in or resist
James 4:9–10 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
James 4:9–10 Be wretched and mourn and weep. Let your laughter be turned to mourning and your joy to gloom. Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
Spiritual- Holy Spirit conviction. Pray that you may be granted repentance.
Physical- Words and actions. It would be nice if we were moved to tears by our sins!
Emotional- Sorrow for what you have done
James 4:10 Humble yourselves before the Lord, and he will exalt you.
See others as better. Wash feet. Reconcile, Apologize
Reward from the Lord.
