1. Sarasota Weekend Getaway
Sarasota is one of the Florida’s hidden gems. Tucked away just south of St. Petersburg and
Tampa, Sarasota has one of the most breathtaking views in all of Florida. It’s very much the
essence of Florida. Beautiful beaches and homes surrounded by deep pools of deep blue water. If
you were to Google any image of Sarasota, it would be worthy of a Florida post card. Even
though it’s not
home to a certain
mouse or wizard,
there’s still plenty
to do in Sarasota, if
anything for a
quick weekend
away from all the
more mainstream
tourism in the
other cities. One
key part of
Sarasota is the
Mote Marine
Laboratory.
While that sounds
a bit dry and scary, the Laboratory has been a vital piece of marine research since its inception in
the 1955. It’s known for research regarding dolphins, coral reef restoration, environmental health
and much more. It also has one of the best aquariums you’d find in Florida. It’s accredited by the
Association of Zoos and Aquariums and continues to live up the very high standards such
accreditation means.
They have touch-pools, viewable working labs and high tech interactive exhibits. You can see
sharks, manatees, dolphins and all manner of local Florida sea life. They also offer Eco Boat
Tours. They take you out into Sarasota Bay and you can take all manner of boat. You can do the
guided kayak tour for something a little smaller or take the Miss Explorer out. Check out the
Mote Marine website for these and several other offers they have.
2. We’ve talked about the seas but, what about the land? Florida is a lush and green environment
and people normally flock to the state so they can enjoy it first-hand. If you’re one of these
people, you’ll want to see the Marie Selby Botanical Gardens. Spreading out over 14 acres, the
museum is both open air and under glass for tons of exotic plants. The gardens are world
renowned for their care and research of these plants, with seven greenhouses attributed to their
upkeep. There’s a Tropical Observatory where you can see rain forest plants. They have bamboo
and banyan groves, cacti, tropical fruit and so much more. If you really appreciate the beauty of
nature and just how colorful and vibrant it can be, be sure and see these fantastic gardens.
We’ve been under water and over the ground, how about some indoor culture? Look no further
than the Sarasota Opera House. Currently in its 55th season, the Opera is home to a variety of
shows. Driving Miss Daisy, The Hobbit, and Pagliacci are just some of the performances you’ll
see. You can also tour this historic site and learn just how it came to be and why it’s still a
mainstay in Sarasota culture. The tours last roughly two hours. For further details regarding
shows, tours and times, check their website.
3. Sarasota is a great place for a relaxing, fun and classy weekend getaway. So, when you’ve
enough of wearing mouse ears or wizard robes or just want a little break from the hustle and
bustle, see Sarasota!
