Motivation is the force that guides our
behavior. It gives the impulse to make a
person move towards his goal with a strong
determination. Motivation empowers
positivity and drives off the negativity .
The term “motivation” refers to the factors
that activate, direct and sustain goal-
oriented behavior. Achieving a goal requires
the ability to persist through obstacles and
keep on moving despite of the difficulties.
Activation, persistence and intensity are
the three major components to motivation.

Motivation can be either Extrinsic or Intrinsic.
Extrinsic motivations are those that arise from outside of the individual
and involves rewards, felicitation, achievements, social recognition,
praise etc.
On the other hand, Intrinsic motivations are those that arise from the
inner soul or within of an individual such as solving a complicated
puzzle just for the contentment of oneself. Participating in a sport for
one’s enjoyment is also an example of intrinsic motivation.

DRIVE Theory:
Also described as the “push theory” of motivation. When an
internal driving state is aroused, the individual is pushed to engage
in goal-oriented behavior which reduces the intensity of driving
state.
Drive theory is based on the principle that organisms are born with
certain psychological needs and that a negative state of tension is
created when these needs are not satisfied. When a need is
satisfied, drive is reduced and the organism returns to a state of
relaxation. According to the theory, drive tends to increase over
time and operates on a feedback control system, much like a
thermostat.

INCENTIVE Theory:
This is the theory of motivation by external desires or incentives.
There are many different reasons why we do things. Sometimes we
are motivated to act because of internal desires and wishes, but at
other times, our behaviours are driven by a desire for external
rewards. The incentive theory is one of the major theories of
motivation and suggests that behaviour is motivated by a desire for
reinforcement or incentives.

MASLOW’s Theory of
Human Motivation:
Maslow proposed
that motivation is the
result of a person's
attempt at fulfilling
five basic needs:
physiological, safety,
social, esteem and
self-actualization.
