Challenges in Data Analytics: Different application scenarios need different storage solutions: HBASE is ideal for point query scenarios but unsuitable for multi-dimensional queries. MPP is suitable for data warehouse scenarios but engine and data are coupled together which hampers scalability. OLAP stores used in BI applications perform best for Aggregate queries but full scan queries perform at a sub-optimal performance. Moreover, they are not suitable for real-time analysis. How do you go from a strictly typed object-based streaming pipeline with simple operations to a structured streaming pipeline with higher order complex relational operations? This is what the Data Engineering team did at GoPro to scale up the development of streaming pipelines for the rapidly growing number of devices and applications. When big data frameworks such as Hadoop first came to exist, developers were happy because we could finally process large amounts of data without writing complex multi-threaded code or worse yet writing complicated distributed code. Unfortunately, only very simple operations were available such as map and reduce. Almost immediately, higher level operations were desired similar to relational operations. And so Hive and dozens (hundreds?) of SQL-based big data tools became available for more developer-efficient batch processing of massive amounts of data. In recent years, big data has moved from batch processing to stream-based processing since no one wants to wait hours or days to gain insights. Dozens of stream processing frameworks exist today and the same trend that occurred in the batch-based big data processing realm has taken place in the streaming world, so that nearly every streaming framework now supports higher level relational operations. In this talk, we will discuss in a very hands-on manner how the streaming data pipelines for GoPro devices and apps have moved from the original Spark streaming with its simple RDD-based operations in Spark 1.x to Spark's structured streaming with its higher level relational operations in Spark 2.x. We will talk about the differences, advantages, and necessary pain points that must be addressed in order to scale relational-based streaming pipelines for massive IoT streams. We will also talk about moving from “hand built” Hadoop/Spark clusters running in the cloud to using a Spark-based cloud service. The CCA has developed new software tools to facilitate the selection, archival arrangement, migration, and preservation of born-digital material, while simultaneously developing new processes and workflows to support this mission. Our presentation will introduce the tools created by CCA to support these processes : our HARVESTING TOOL, ADAPT, QUESTIONNAIRE. "Data mesh is a relatively recent architectural innovation, espoused as one of the best ways to fix analytic data. We renegotiate aged social conventions by focusing on treating data as a product, with a clearly defined data product owner, akin to that of any other product. In addition, we focus on building out a self-service platform with integrated governance, letting consumers safely access and use the data they need to solve their business problems. Data mesh is prescribed as a solution for _analytical data_, so that conventionally analytical results (think weekly sales or monthly revenue reports) can be more accurately and predictably computed. But what about non-analytical business operations? Would they not also benefit from data products backed by self-service capabilities and dedicated owners? If you've ever provided a customer with an analytical report that differed from their operational conclusions, then this talk is for you. Adam discusses the resounding successes he has seen from applying data mesh _off-label_ to both analytical and operational domains. The key? Event streams. Well-defined, incrementally updating data products that can power both real-time and batch-based applications, providing a single source of data for a wide variety of application and analytical use cases. Many data pipelines share common characteristics and are often built in similar but bespoke ways, even within a single organisation. In this talk, we will outline the key considerations which need to be applied when building data pipelines, such as performance, idempotency, reproducibility, and tackling the small file problem. We’ll work towards describing a common Data Engineering toolkit which separates these concerns from business logic code, allowing non-Data-Engineers (e.g. Business Analysts and Data Scientists) to define data pipelines without worrying about the nitty-gritty production considerations. We’ll then introduce an implementation of such a toolkit in the form of Waimak, our open-source library for Apache Spark (https://github.com/CoxAutomotiveDataSolutions/waimak), which has massively shortened our route from prototype to production. Finally, we’ll define new approaches and best practices about what we believe is the most overlooked aspect of Data Engineering: deploying data pipelines.

Data mesh is a relatively recent term that describes a set of principles that good modern data systems uphold. A kind of “microservices” for the data-centric world. While the data mesh is not technology-specific as a pattern, the building of systems that adopt and implement data mesh principles have a relatively long history under different guises. In this talk, we share our recommendations and picks of what every developer should know about building a streaming data mesh with Kafka. We introduce the four principles of the data mesh: domain-driven decentralization, data as a product, self-service data platform, and federated governance. We then cover topics such as the differences between working with event streams versus centralized approaches and highlight the key characteristics that make streams a great fit for implementing a mesh, such as their ability to capture both real-time and historical data. We’ll examine how to onboard data from existing systems into a mesh, modelling the communication within the mesh, how to deal with changes to your domain’s “public” data, give examples of global standards for governance, and discuss the importance of taking a product-centric view on data sources and the data sets they share.

We are responsible for about a fifth of the ads a person sees online on a day to day basis. This is accomplished by our Marketing team, who continues to find performance wins by leveraging proprietary algorithms, deep learning models and advanced analytics to optimize the Ad spend. All these frameworks rely on the performance data available in the Core Digital Media‚Äôs Enterprise Data Warehouse - EDW to make decisions. The performance data is collected from a multitude of marketing channels like Social - Facebook, Search - Google, Content - Taboola, Media, Affiliate and Retention and integrated into EDW. Timely and consistent availability of data in EDW is extremely critical for marketing optimization. This talk details how we migrated our Marketing data loads from a legacy ETL platform to a data infrastructure built around Apache Kafka and Apache Spark, using Python and Scala. This migration not only lead to a reduction in data availability times from an average of 60+ minutes to 2 mins but also we are able to load 24*7 into the EDW. As a part of the talk we will talk about why we chose Kafka and Spark Structured streaming for this, what were some of the challenges we faced and also some of the best practices to follow for implementing data streaming architectures.
