Bachelor of Science in Unmanned
Systems Applications (BSUSA)
Degree Outline
• Degree focus:
“The Bachelor of Science in Unmanned Systems Application (BSUSA) degree provides students the
opportunity to focus their education on the application of unmanned systems and related
technologies. Concentration in the areas of administration, operation, and development of unmanned
systems will enable graduates to immediately assume professional responsibilities within this rapidly
growing and dynamic industry.“
• Goals:
– Produce graduates qualified to immediately enter or advance position within the workforce
(administration, operation, development, and support)
– Provide a designated, UAS specific educational path into our MSUS program
• Target clientele:
– High school graduates with a specific interest in unmanned systems applications
– High school graduates with a general interest in scientific topics related to the concentration areas
and associated minors, adapted and specific to unmanned systems applications
– Current employees in aviation related fields that are, or will be, impacted by the growth in
unmanned systems applications

TRACKS OF STUDY
Students will select from one of three available tracks of study, each containing a total of 12 courses
(36 credit hours). Students will fulfill six (6) required track of study support courses (18credit hours)
within the track of study and will fulfill six (6) additional courses (18 credit hours) from a select choice
of by selecting one of the available minors and making up remaining credit shortage with upper level
electives.
Students will chose from the respective list of available minor (selection of existing minor within the
WW catalogue) to complete their chosen track requirements. Course requirements for the selected
minor are as outlined in the minor description (within the Worldwide catalog), with which students will
have to comply. The depicted number (in parenthesis) of additional electives that result from each
choice of minor is for reference only and is based on current course/credit requirements for the minor
and course/credits requirements already accomplished in the BSUSA Program Core and/or Track
support. (This number of remaining electives may be subject to changes with catalogue changes to a
minor).

Notas do Editor

  1. ERAU is an independent, nonprofit, nonsectarian, and coeducational university that offers more than 70 undergraduate and graduate degrees, ranging from associate to PhDs for more than 32,000 students. ERAU-W operates more than 150 campuses across the U.S., Europe, Asia and the Middle East for more than 24,000 students utilizing synchronous, asynchronous, and blended learning modalities supporting distance learning and continuing education. Available UAS educational options provide an interactive learning environment to develop fundamental skills, including applying knowledge, independent and collaborative work, communication, and leadership. ERAU-W has maintained long-time status as sole provider of aviation-related degrees to the U.S military in Europe and has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top online educators for veterans (#2) and online undergraduate degree programs (#5). Our programs feature use of inquiry-based learning activities to build experience, identify trends, analyze requirements, develop strategies, recommend solutions, recognize opportunities for innovation, communicate effectively, and serve as valuable contributors and advocates for safe, efficient, and effective use of UAS technology.
  2. Will talk about the MSUS by setting it in context of the industry, then our program, and then the individual classes.
  3. First, our industry. Unmanned systems incredibly diverse, including air, ground, maritime, and space systems, and encompassing both civil and military applications.
  4. Virtually every sector has experienced rapid growth in the past five years, and is projected to continue growing quickly. Global civil unmanned aerial market 15% growth now till 2026\ Unmanned ground vehicle market 12% annual growth over same period Military unmanned aerial systems 6%
  5. The major driver of market growth is the continued development of new technology that is allowing for smaller, more powerful systems. For example, sensors that used to be too big and heavy for the small UAS market are now commonplace. This is a synthetic aperture radar, one of the systems just now being made small and light enough to pretty soon mount on a commercial small UAS. Sensor fusion, or the ability to integrate sensory information between several different systems, the way we do when we perceive the world, is also improving and opening up new applications thanks to the development of data fusion algorithms and improved data processing capabilities. Everywhere you turn you hear about artificial intelligence, including machine learning, deep learning, neural networks – and all this AI enables autonomy, in everything from small drones to self-driving cars. As is usual with technology, the more it matures, the less expensive it gets, and the affordability of systems opens up a variety of new use cases. Finally, in the commercial world, regulation provides stability and predictability. In the aerial domain, the passage of the FAA’s Part 107 small UAS rule two years ago really helped that market segment.
  6. The Master of Science in Unmanned Systems offered at the Worldwide campus is a fully online program that you can participate in from anywhere in the world.
  7. The MSUS is a 36 credit hour program, meaning that there are twelve three-credit classes, which consist of 9 core classes and three classes in an elective concentration.
  8. The elective concentrations allow you to choose three classes that meet your special interest, whether that is in human factors, emergency response, or one of our eight other areas. One of our most unique concentrations is sUAS operations – this program allows you to earn your Part 107 remote pilot certificate, and gain hands on experience in actually flying small UAS and conducting data gathering and analysis.
  9. Finally, let’s talk about the individual classes you will be taking.
  10. The core classes consist of the background information you will need to understand the enabling technologies and future possibilities of unmanned systems, as well as the challenges to fully leveraging their potential. In addition, the core classes will give you a strong foundation in statistics and research methods.
  11. So how do you know if this is the right program for you? This program is a good fit for you if… You have a bachelor’s degree You are already in the unmanned field and want to deepen your knowledge You want to transition into the field of unmanned systems You are interested in unmanned systems, but you are not looking for an engineering program. If you ARE looking for an engineering program, please check out our Master of Science in Unmanned and Autonomous Systems Engineering, currently available at the Daytona Beach campus, and soon available through Worldwide as well.
  12. I want to leave you with the story of one of our most recent graduates. He is an airline pilot for United Airlines, and seeing the tremendous growth, he became interested in unmanned systems. The program was no walk in the park, but the knowledge gained was priceless. The two years covered everything from unmanned systems in space, air, land, sea, and underwater, highlighting the need to use smart new innovative technologies to enhance safety in areas that are too dangerous for manned operation. I accomplished things during this degree program as a part of some of the course requirements I never thought I would have done, to include starting a blog, and getting FEMA certifications.   The professors were great to work with, and were all very knowledgeable in the subject they taught. They were also very demanding, which helped me a lot with my writing and communication skills. I would recommend a Master of Science in Unmanned Systems to anyone currently engaged in the unmanned world (drones) or anyone wanting to take advantage of the current and projected surge in unmanned aerial system (UAS) operations within the National Airspace System (NAS).   Approximately one year into the program, I became a pilot volunteer for the Air Line Pilots Association as a member of the Aircraft Design and Operation (ADO) team where I was entrusted as a member of the UAS Team representing 57,000 pilots flying for 33 Airlines in the United States and Canada. My last assignment was to represent the association on an Aviation Rulemaking Committee (ARC) for the Identification and Tracking of UAS in the NAS this past summer. I believe the degree program opened the door for me to serve my fellow pilots, as the integration of UAS into the NAS with manned aircraft will be a huge safety challenge for all involved in the process.   Good luck to you in your pursuit of an advanced degree. If I can do it with a job that has me in sometimes four different countries a month, plus a family, and volunteer work, I believe anyone can with proper time management and hard work.
