Notas do Editor

1. Thank you for your time today. We’re looking forward to discussing how to help optimize your SAP environments with EMC virtual infrastructure and how to help you accelerate the journey to your cloud. Note to presenter: This presentation is designed to provide a high level overview of EMC’s capabilities for SAP customer environments. It is targeted towards general IT audiences, which could include combinations of IT managers, VP’s of IT, Storage, Systems and SAP Application Administrators. This presentation will provide an overall review of EMC’s capabilities for SAP customers, while reinforcing EMC’s corporate message of the journey to your cloud, highlighting no more than 3-4 key technology/solution concepts in each phase, including (where appropriate) how virtualizing SAP application servers can help address customer challenges. Specific areas this presentation covers are the following:Journey to the cloud overview and EMC’s own experience on this journey to datePhase I (focus on simple and efficient infrastructure) – highlighting server virtualization, storage virtualization, backup/recovery and replication- Phase II (focus on improved quality of service) – highlighting faster provisioning and more performance, enhanced backup with de-dupe and federated recovery of all SAP environments as well as active-active availabilityPhase III (focus on standardization) – highlighting the value of standardizing at the virtual infrastructure level vs. verticalizing (ex: Oracle Exadata) and example of Vblock as a platform to move in this direction, as well as EMC Consulting Services and additional resourcesWe understand many SAP customers are at different levels of readiness and appetite for discussing virtualization. It’s important to discuss with them that while we provide Solutions for SAP customers which include virtualization, their choice to run virtualization on their servers is up to them, and does not preclude the use of any of the EMC technologies we discuss. Rather, we feel virtualization can make these areas better than using EMC or SAP technology alone, so feel free to use the virtualization discussion as much or as little as makes sense in your customer engagements. The primary goal of presentations like these is as a technology and solution introduction to lead customers to understand “what” we do, and wanting more detail on “how” we do it. A more technical presentation, and/or additional technical slides can be added to this presentation to go deeper on specific topics.
2. When critically evaluating current IT today, most leaders describe their enterprise IT environments as too complex, too costly, and too inflexible. Each business process and application has been carefully architected and built to optimize costs for the service levels needed – in different silos. But when needs change, what’s been built often can’t deliver or adapt to the new requirement. And, when one silo of technology needs more resources, other silos of resources are often incompatible – either too costly for the job at hand, or incapable of supporting the service level required. To customers running SAP what does this mean? SAP is typically running in complex environments each with unique requirements, production databases, production applications and test/development. There are fundamental requirements in their SAP landscapes. Adaptability, simplification and ease of use in these complex environments help to minimize risks. Of course, rising costs are a great concern that can be addressed by leveraging more efficient use of the IT infrastructure. And accelerating the time between technology purchase decisions and the ability to effectively exploit new capabilities helps keep companies competitive. This complexity creates a high degree of inefficiency in the ability to leverage your SAP applications and a high cost of infrastructure to support it. More importantly, this can greatly impact flexibility moving forward to adapt IT as the business changes. Customers are telling us Reducing Infrastructure Costs, Meeting Service Levels, Increasing Operational Efficiency and Maximize Performance while Reducing Risk are of critical importance and as the business grows to ensure agility and flexibility so your IT environment can grow as your business needs grow.Frequently re-architecting environments, difficulty in optimizing resources across different silos, changing requirements – these all put tremendous pressure on capital budgets, operational expenses, and the ability to quickly respond to the business. If you could, what would you change in your environment? What outcomes are you struggling to achieve? What new projects aren’t getting done fast enough – affordably enough? Speaker note: This offers an opportunity to ask customers to comment on relevance of these issues, or others, for their organization.Although small-to-midsize organizations increasingly face the same business demands as their larger counter parts, they seldom have the luxury of specialized resources and economies of scale to adopt complex or narrowly focused solutions.Future imperatives don’t override today’s business realities, so initiatives such as server consolidation and storage consolidation need to work together to produce more than just the sum of the parts.New technology isn’t beneficial if it’s disruptively complex. Capabilities that fit seamlessly into the infrastructure without wholesale retraining and unique skills requirements deliver the maximum benefit.Organizations of any size can’t afford to solve their data growth problems by simply throwing storage capacity at them. Small-to-midsize businesses need to tap the same technologies for reigning in capacity and performance demands that are being adopted by large IT departments.
3. This is what Virtualization helps SAP customers address, and what EMC is doing is taking the best of both Private & Public Cloud worlds and bringing them together. Here’s how:For starters, VMware has taken its vSphere operating system to the next level and turned it into a true cloud operating system. And that cloud OS dynamically and efficiently supplies pools of storage, pools of compute, and pools of network access – all dynamically.IT no longer needs to think in terms of individual machines – servers, storage, network interfaces.Instead IT can think and manage in terms of capacity that can be dynamically added or removed, and instantly leveraged. This enables IT to focus on application and service delivery, not the underlying infrastructure. That way, as an application winds down, those resources can be freed and put into pools for other uses. This opens the door to a whole new way to do change control or provisioning. You get a much more cost-effective, secure, reliable, and trusted environment. We are offering this set of technologies and capabilities to our SAP customers so they can build their private clouds – presenting seamless services to the business with IT fully in control. At the same time we are working with our service provider partners to put the same set of technologies into their public clouds. The way to integrate service providers and public cloud services with your private cloud is what we think of as a hybrid cloud. It’s automated and creates this trusted, converged, automated infrastructure that’s the best of both worlds. So customers can offer private cloud for some things , and a public cloud, or Service Provider, for other things.
4. And SAP customers and analysts agree. Virtualization is a top priority for customers ranking #1 in the Top 10 Technology Priorities from Gartner January 2010, and in fact many SAP customers are already partially there –at various stages of the virtualization lifecycle.
5.
6. Most are progressing along this Journey to Your Cloud in 3 phases – and many IT organizations are well on their way.The journey starts with eliminating the old physical approach to IT of one server, one application here in phase 1.In the first phase the focus is on IT applications – those things that are out of sight, out of mind to the business – file and print, test and development, web environments, etc. The focus here is on things like storage consolidation, backup, and accelerating VMware adoption. It’s an infrastructure focus, and the payoff is lower IT costs. In this first phase, you can expect to see significant OpEx and CapEx savings. That’s achieved by creating a simple and efficient storage infrastructure that’s well protected. In phase 2, the focus shifts to better IT for business applications. Here the payoff is improved quality of service and more efficient delivery of the mission critical applications that power the business. Things like Exchange, SharePoint, Oracle applications, SAP, or desktop projects like Windows 7 or virtual desktop with VMware View. Improved quality of service doesn’t simply mean increasing service levels – it’s about the ability to deliver what’s needed and to be able to easily and quickly match to a change in what’s needed for things like scalability, continuity, and security. In phase 3, it’s about improved business and IT agility. Providing IT-as-a-Service to your end users and business units much the same way as a service provider would provide services to their customers. At this phase your running IT like a business – costs and services are well understood – business units and users can now make an educated business decision to choose what they need. EMC has the offerings, the knowledge, and the partnerships to advance you through every phase of the journey. < CLICK >Let’s take a look at some examples of how we can help you lower IT costs by making IT simpler, more efficient, and well protected in phase 1.
7. The EMC VNX Unified Storage platform delivers an ideal foundation for unifying your SAP environments consolidated simple & efficient infrastructure.EMC Unified Storage is a highly scalable storage solution optimized for file and block access with wide choice for connectivity protocols (FC/FCoE/iSCSI, NFS, CIFS) for SAP OLTP applicationsJust like VMware vMotion allows you to move things around on the server side, EMC saw the need to allow data to move dynamically across different tiers of drives (from high performance to lower cost/high capacity) according to its business activity. Not only did such data movement make sense, it also had to be fully automated and self-managing.Storage Tiering – Solutions for both file & blockEMC FAST Cache minimizes the invest into flash drives while giving significant benefit to SAP applications by caching all the hot dataEMC FAST improves the TCO by automating the tiering of SAP application data. Combining FAST & FAST Cache can scale user flash tier to any size making short-stroking a thing of the pastVirtual Storage provisioning allows customers to thin provision their storage and enables them to make storage investment based on demandDifferent SAP workloads will have different requirements performance and scalability. One other advancement EMC has made is to be able to bring storage resources closer to the SAP applications they support. This is highly beneficial to deliver more performance in environments where you experience sudden spikes in I/O of applications and going to disk each time would impact performance. EMC has a Proven Solution for VNX Fast Suite for SAP as detailed in white paper below.http://www.emc.com/collateral/hardware/white-papers/h8220-fast-suite-sap-vnx-wp.pdf
8. A great example of server & storage consolidation is:BancoBajio, who started their journey in 2007 with a pilot for 1.5 years.BancoBajio has now replaced 15 racks for one server; They needed a platform that would help store the great volumes of information in the bank, especially of their SAP ERP system, in a way that would be highly efficient, redundant, with high availability and at a reasonable cost. They looked for a storage infrastructure that would support all the branches they currently hadoperating and all the others that would open in the future, as well as the applications that run on them. They believed and bet that EMC would help them with the implementation of SAP and it has provided many benefits.“In December 2007, we decided to incorporate virtualization at Banc Bajio, with solutions from VMware, because we had one application per server. We tried it for one year and a half as our pilot project, and the truth is we never had any problems. With a new alternative site, virtualization helped us savein energy, space and costs.Instead of using 15 racks, we now have everything in one server highly available and redundant. Therefore, the savings in administration is tangible, in the assignment of human resources to the virtualized servers. We have almost 70% virtualized. VMware has been a special factor to increase efficiencies in terms of failures and restoration of equipment and implementation of systems. This has contributed to their IT infrastructure being able to position itself within the bank in a better way, with a faster delivery of services.”
9. Here’s a customer who actually did it - Callaway Golf with EMC and VMware can provision new servers in under 30 minutes, showed a 13 month payback-breakeven of $1.8M in capital and operating expense savings. Anddata compression was reported from 5 to 8 % of its original size, with an ROI of 289% over 3 years. (There’s a case study that can be sent to customers)http://www.emc.com/collateral/emc-perspective/h6738-callaway-golf-ep.pdf Provision new servers in <30 minROI of 289% over 3 years$1.8m+ In Savings
10. Let’s turn to phase 2 of the journey – business production. Now that you have consolidated your infrastructure & put a sound backup & recovery process/strategy in place, as your SAP Landscape scales, you’ll need higher levels of availability and recovery. You want the most scalable storage for your virtualized landscape to meet the needs of today and prepare for the unpredictability of tomorrow. You want the highest levels of business continuity to eliminate unplanned and planned outages with the highest levels of protection, compliance, and security. What phase 2 delivers is improved quality of service. Here you are not only introducingnew technology to protect, secure, and manage applications, you’re also fundamentally changing the operational processes you use to run IT.The payoff goes beyondcapex and opex savings. You have the potential for an IT that operates better – better availability, better protection, better security, efficiency, and so on. EMC excels at enabling customers to move through this phase. We have a proven track record of supporting the information infrastructure requirements of the world’s most critical applications.
11. So how do customers do it? They start with provisioning. With virtual infrastructure today, SAP users have access to some new and incredible capabilities to make their SAP landscape run better, and at less cost. The challenge has been being able to access this functionality in a fast and effective manner without impacting SAP availability or processes. For example, new types of disk drive technology can deliver up to 30x the performance of traditional FC drives or deliver much higher capacity at 1/3 the cost. Figuring out which SAP workloads should use which tier of storage and then actually moving the SAP workloads to these tiers can be a very time consuming task to repeat and often requires downtime to do so. EMC virtual infrastructure allows the use of virtual pools of tiered storage to be provisioned in an automated fashion to the SAP applications supported. You can set policies as to which databases or which data within your databases should have access to what levels of capacity, how much performance and when. You can set these policies to automatically adjust themselves, or alert you so that changes could be made manually with insight from your database statistics.Using this technology combined with VMware vSphere, EMC has been able to demonstrate a reduction in the time it takes to convert a physical server to a virtual environment by 80%. Some examples of our best practices we have developed have shown how to target your most latency sensitive SAP workloads to flash drives while also moving your less active data to SATA to simultaneously increase overall performance AND lower cost in terms of cost per gigabyte and power/cooling.These are just examples, you could of course tune the environment for greater performance or greater cost savings, placing more workloads on Flash Drives or SATA.<CLICK>One other advancement EMC has made is to be able to bring storage resources closer to the SAP applications they support. This is highly beneficial to deliver more performance in environments where you experience sudden spikes in I/O of applications and going to disk each time would impact performance. http://www.emc.com/collateral/software/white-papers/h7330-virtual-sap-symmetrix-vmware-wp.pdf
12. Synopsys, the world leader in electronic design automation, is another joint SAP and EMC customer. They were challenged by their aged IT platform which resulted in underperformance of the SAP solution. As a company that needs to provide high quality services to their customers, they decided to embrace re-platforming to a cloud-based landscape. In evaluating their platform choices, high availability and performance were key requirements.Synopsys selected EMC’s VMAX storage platform including the decision to utilize all Enterprise Flash Drives (EFD). The results were impressive: SAP’s production runtime throughput improved from 36% to 300% for mixed workloads Database response improved in the range of 350-470% And the quality of service has enabled Synopsys to achieve high levels of customer retention and increased revenues.
13. Maximizing quality of service for SAP environments with EMC virtual infrastructure involves different levels of capabilities you can leverage within EMC and VMware technologies. Each of these becomes critical as your SAP landscapes scale, more data is added and more servers and storage are needed, balancing quality of service and cost can be difficult. What do you need, and what is your SL requirement<CLICK>The first – Data Replication enables Storage & Server Replication– it is the ability to make it faster to provision storage and server resources for SAP production databases and applications without taking the database offline. More than just provisioning, here we can set automated policies to have the infrastructure self-tune as SAP workloads change and dynamically adjust itself to give you the performance you need, when you need it, but then shift to de-provision resources and preserve cost reduction. <CLICK>Protecting SAP landscapes is more than just backup, here it’s about Accelerated Recovery - recovering your applications themselves to any point in time you need and as fast as you need it. And then to federate recovery of all of your SAP landscapes locally or over distance would allow you to scale your SAP landscapes while maintaining effective protection and ensure SLAs are met if no downtime is a requirement<CLICK>With seamless movement of applications across arrays without downtime provides an even further level of service quality, so Continuous Protection- ensuring applications retain continuous access to their users and data. This allows for the remote site SAP infrastructure to be actively utilized, increasing the return on your investment for that infrastructure.
14. Here we show a customer case study of a large manufacturing firm with a 10 terabyte SAP production environment. The customer was seeking to implement a remote disaster recovery solution across 2500 miles. Two major challenges in this were being able to periodically test the DR scenario to ensure it would work, without dramatically impacting production SAP applications, in addition to being able to control the cost of the bandwidth interconnect required for the replication.Through leveraging EMC RecoverPoint, the customer was able to:Reduce Disaster recovery (DR) test time reduced 80 hours to 8Dramatically reduced OPEX due to shortened DR exercise timeControl WAN bandwidth costs even with data growth and distancesDeploy tiered storage using an EMC Unified Storage platform at the remote site as a target for the EMC Symmetrix in the primary site, saving costs.
15. As we look at the concept of the cloud the ability to have read/write access to information anywhere in your environment – whether it is a data center in Hopkinton, Mass or Walldorf, Germany, you want to be able to access that information as if it were local. This would allow for seamless movement of applications across arrays without downtime, ensuring applications retain continuous access to their users and data. This would also allow for remote site infrastructure to be actively utilized, increasing return on investment for that infrastructure. To address these IT needs, EMC developed VPLEX. VPLEX is a new storage platform that inserts in the SAN, in between hosts and storage, and can extend data over distance, within, between and across data centers – an innovation that we refer to as “Access Anywhere”. This has three very powerful advantages for SAP landscapes. The first is mobility – once VPLEX is deployed into your SAP landscape you can move your it seamlessly within or across data centers without any downtime. This can be useful for migrating SAP applications to new infrastructure or even a new data center. Synchronous availability is limited to 100km today, after which asynchronous mode would be needed, introducing some latency, but still active mobility. The second benefit is moving from disaster recovery to really disaster avoidance – In an active-active mode there is no need for recovery or restart, no manual intervention. Should an outage occur at one site, your applications are available and running immediately at the second site (within synchronous distances)Finally, this allows you to extend the value of your SAP applications beyond the physical walls of the data center. We can now leverage the same copy of SAP data across multiple users miles apart and do so while tracking the data changes and ensuring transaction integrity as SAP applications are accessed and changed simultaneously. This could be used to allow development and testing across multiple groups in multiple locations. VPLEX is an exciting new EMC technology and we are working actively with SAP engineering to continue to test and document use cases across extended distances. Two EMC Proven Solutions for VPLEX for both Metro & Geo simplifying SAP landscapes is detailed at below links:**EMC delivered a Reference Architecture demonstrating a VPLEX Metro configuration in combination with VMware and VMotion over distance to nondisruptively migrate application between EMC systems and Vblocks within an SAP environment. Note to Presenter: The Reference Architecture is in the “White Paper: VMotion Over Distance for Microsoft, Oracle, and SAP—Enabled by VCE Vblock 1, EMC Symmetrix VMAX, EMC CLARiiON, and EMC VPLEX Metro—An Architectural Overview.”***Another reference architecture is available for VPLEX GEO: “Simplifying SAP Disaster Recovery Across Distributed Environments – Enabled by VPLEX GEO.”http://www.emc.com/collateral/hardware/white-papers/h8215-sap-dr-vplex-geo-wp.pdf
16. Phase 3 of the journey centers on delivering IT as a service … creating a catalog of services for the business – whether that be infrastructure as a service, application platforms as a service, popular applications as a service, desktop as a service, or other variations. At this point virtualization is pervasive. Everything new is deployed virtually. And the value is all about faster time to market, process automation, and real IT agility. In this phase, IT is fully policy driven. Your infrastructure allows you to allocate costs accurately and have true cost transparency for the level of service you’re providing to your users and business units – and for them be able to shift from asking for the technology they want to making a business justified decision on the experience the business needs. If you think about it, this phase is really about establishing a new relationship between the business and IT.IT becomes the internal service provider and business users become intelligent users of these services.
17. Many customers however want to take a step further to simplify and accelerate deployment, using a single, pre-configured platform.Let’s look at one example of standardization with the Vblock Infrastructure Package– it’s designed for ultra-standardization right from the start. Vblock is the converged infrastructure of Cisco servers and network, VMware and EMC from VCE. Vblocks are designed not just to provide predictable SLAs to the business, but also predictable levels of power and cooling, capacity, scalability. You can think of IT in terms of floor tiles or sq meters. This simplifies and brings data center planning up to a strategic business exercise.Infrastructure costs are lower because high utilization rates can be maintained across many applications – provisioned, returned to the pool, and reallocated.Operating costs are lower because of standardization and more complete management, streamlines operations - and many of the tasks your staff is doing today are automated. The real payoff is the speed and ease in responding to new business needs and changes to their requirements. However, the Vblock ends at the application layer. It is not pre-packaged with Oracle, or Microsoft, or SAP. While it is designed to help you standardize, it is also designed to help you maintain flexibility, control and choice to deploy whatever applications you need or have today or in the future.
18. So, what is a first good step in standardization?Well, we see a logical first step is to look at your current application environments and server infrastructure and begin to evaluate which of those would be suitable to move towards an open, x86 (Intel) infrastructure. This best positions you as a first step to start to be able to take maximum use of virtualization for your servers running SAP, Oracle, or Microsoft at the highest performance.
19. An independent TCO analysis published jointly by SAP, Cisco, EMC and VMware illustrated that SAP solutions running on the Vblock architecture can dramatically increase efficiency and reduce capital and operating expenses. Vblock packages integrate best of breed technology from industry leaders Cisco, EMC, and VMware, backed by VCE's seamless world class support. Each Vblock is pre-built and ready for deployment. The modular design is highly scalable to meet growth needs, provide investment protection, and lower total costof ownership.Using the results of the TCO study and percentage improvements by each value driver, we estimate SAP on Vblock can realize up to 13% TCO savings. This can mean as much as $5-6M in annual savings in some cases.
20. In fact, we at EMC are doing it ourselves. EMC Global IT is also on this journey. We have progressively moved our IT applications and business production applications to the private cloud over the past few years. Today we have virtualized over 80% of our mission critical application environments, including SAP, with 100% of Test/Dev fully virtualized. This has resulted in millions of dollars in savings both operational and in physical infrastructure and has made EMC’s data center more green computing friendly through reduction of carbon footprint and power and cooling. We are now able to deploy ourSAP applications in a shortened time and with less dedicated resources. As an example when we deployed a physical server in the datacenter a few years back it took 31 steps and about 5-10 business days to rack, stack, zone, allocate, install, configurethe system. Now leveraging the integrated infrastructure of Vblock and VMware we're building servers in 1.5 hours. By next year, we will be one of the largest virtualized SAP deployments in the world. http://www.emc.com/collateral/software/white-papers/h7298-it-journey-private-cloud-wp.pdf (EMC IT white paper)http://www.emc.com/collateral/emc-perspective/h8755-durham-vision-ep.pdf

25. 30 x 600 GB SAS + 5 x 200 GB Flash in FAST VP, 4 x 200 GB in Flash CacheThe business challenge SAP customers face today is reducing TCO and improving performance and service level delivery. Frequently, responsiveness to sensitive SAP applications has deteriorated over time due to increased data volumes, unbalanced data stores, and changing business requirements. By using EMC’s latest FAST Cache and FAST VP (Fully automated storage tiering for virtual pools) technology on EMC unified storage with block data, SAP deployments under performance pressure can gain a significant performance boost without the need to redesign the applications, adjust the data layouts, or reload significant amounts of data. With automated sub-LUN level tiering and extended cache, customers can properly balance data distribution across the tiers of storage which allows optimization of space utilization and performance improvements.
