TOPIC:
Research Questions:

    1) What do you already know about your research topic? Why did you choose to research
        this topic

    2) What questions would you like to answer about your research topic?

    3) How is your topic relevant to society? Can knowledge of your topic increase health
        awareness?

    4) What are some things you learned about your topic during research?

    5) Make a list of useful articles or websites you have found. This list should include proper
MLA citation. Use your rubric to help you find information on how to properly cite
        articles or websites

LESSON 2: Plagiarism, paraphrasing, and quoting assignment

This lesson will be introduced with definitions and examples of plagiarism, quotes, and
paraphrasing

ASSIGNMENT:

    • Find Three Credible academic sources on your chosen research paper topic

o Source one: paraphrase information and cite using MLA format

o Source two: paraphrase and quote information once and cite using MLA format

o Source three: paraphrase information and quote information twice (two quotes
from material) and cite using MLA format

Remember to use MLA format when citing the information from each source. Also,
even if you paraphrase you need to give credit where credit is due.
End result- Research Paper (plagiarism free) 

                         HEALTH SEMESTER RESEARCH PROJECT

You will research a health related topic of interest and complete a research paper. You
are to cite no fewer than three reliable references in your research. A bibliography must be

submitted with your paper. You have the remainder of the semester to complete this project, so
do not procrastinate and use your time wisely. There may be class time given to research your
project depending on our schedule. Before you begin research for your project, you will need to
have received my approval on the subject material.

                                      Research Paper (100 points)

The research paper is a cumulative overview of the information presented. The paper
should be type written, double spaced, twelve point font, no more than 1-inch margins, and a
minimum of five pages in length (this does not include the bibliography or title page). You should
include all of the following criteria within the content of your paper; title, introduction, literature
review, conclusion and bibliography.
                                         Title and Topic (5 pts.)

    • Create a title page that is appropriate and related to your subject material.

    • Include your name, date, class, and hour under the title page.

                                          Introduction (15 pts.)

An introduction should provide some initial information to help us see where you are going with
the project.
    • Tell us why you chose the subject.
    • What exactly drew you to the subject material?
    • What you had to do to find the material.
    • What types of resources you used.

                                      Literature Review (40 pts.)

A literature review is similar to a summary. The main objective is to discuss what you have found
from your research and how it applies to the subject material in your presentation. State the
facts. You may see this as a summary; however, keep in mind that you are trying to find things
that you do not already know about the subject. That is where your research will play a big role.
We are looking for you to build upon already acquired knowledge and give an in depth look into
your topic. But remember, properly reference ideas and work done by the sources that provided
you with any material.

                                        Conclusion (15 pts.)

A proper conclusion will include the following:
    • The main points found in your literature review
    • Questions that the current research does not answer. And yes, you will have questions,
if you take the time to think about what is left unanswered in the research you found.
This is how new research is created.
    • Suggest what you believe is most useful in the material provided in your project and how
it can be useful to society. Explain how your findings might be useful to the knowledge of
        your audience.
    • Anything you learned and found intriguing about the material.

                                       Bibliography (15 pts.)

Use APA citation format. The following resources may be useful:

The means of assessing whether the objectives were
met

Students will turn in assignments from Lessons 1 and 2. After completion of each lesson,
constructive feedback will be given both verbally and in written format for the student to be
successful

Below is the rubric to assess the final product: Health Research Paper

During the evaluation process the moderator (teacher) will be reviewing the research paper. It
is possible that every paper will be different in that individual creativity is both encouraged and
necessary in order for us to maintain an educational atmosphere, however, it is necessary for the
author(student) to demonstrate the following parts in their research paper. The rubric below
provides an objective based evaluation process. It is possible to get points in between the listed
scores, if the score necessitates the adjustment.
                                          Evaluation Process

Title Topic (5 points) ______ Points

5 points = there is a title which reflects the topic and he/she chose a topic which is applicable to
health

3 points = the student is missing one of the two necessary components

0 points= the student does not show a title reflective of the topic material and did not choose a
topic applicable to health

Introduction (15 points)

15 points = the student provides introductory information that helps the reader understand the
basic concepts of the research paper. Questions such as why they chose the topic, what drew
their interest, how they found the material and what kinds of resources were used should be
answered.

7 points = the student answers half of the questions or does not give the reader a clear idea about
what the presentation is about
0 points = the student did not create an introduction that answered any initial questions of the
reader, nor did the student explain how or why they chose the topic, where they found their
research, etc.

                                                                                    ______ Points
Literature Review (40 points)

40 points = the literature review provides a detailed summary/abstract of the overall findings
from the student’s research. The literature review should contain some citations to the student’s
sources, especially if the findings were the ideas of the source. The student notes facts, figures
and findings that they discovered from the research that was unknown or interesting.

20 points = the student does have a detailed summary, however, does not cite their sources
directly within the text of their document, or is lacking some detail within the summary.

10 points or less = the student forgets to make citations, does not show research findings and/or
does not complete a summarization of the material which he/she researched.

                                                                                    ______ Points

Conclusion (15 points)
15 points = the student reviews the main points from her/his research findings. He/she presents
unanswered questions that arose from the research. The student states how the findings in the
current research can be useful to the public’s health. The student states what was most useful
from the research findings.

7 points = the student missed a few of the primary points needed for the conclusion.

0 points = the student did not have any type of conclusion.
                                                                                    ______ Points

Bibliography (15 points)

15 points = the student has a minimum of three cited sources. Each citation came from reliable
sources. The citations were made in APA or MLA format. Citations were made within the text.

10 points = the student did not include citations in the text, or did not use APA or MLA format,
or did not have reliable resources (i.e. magazines such as Men’s Fitness, Health, etc.).

5 or less points = the student had no visible references and all material was either invalid and
unproven or worse plagiarized.
                                                                                     ______ Points

Written Product (10 points)

10 points: the student maintains appropriate grammar, spelling and sentence structure within the
entire document. This would include, but is not limited to, correct punctuation and paragraph
format.
5 points: the student had some spelling, punctuation or sentence structure errors, however, the
paper still maintained a good flowing prose.

0 points: the student had a combination of several spelling, punctuation and sentence structure
mistakes, which made the paper difficult to read and understand.

                                                                                     ______ Points

The required time & resources

Lesson 1: 1 day

Lesson 2: 1-2 days

Final Product: Students will be given about 2-3 months to complete this Semester Project . One
or two class periods will be given to work on this assignment, however the majority of this
assignment will be completed outside of class.

This Research paper counts as 100 points of the final examination

Students will need to utilize the computer lab as well as the library and internet in order to
complete this assignment

Brief description of the primary teaching strategy(ies)

DIDACTIC MODEL: “Sage on Stage”: I will be giving them the assignment and explaining what
needs to be accomplished. During this assignment, knowledge and skill is being transferred from
expert (myself) to novice.

CONSTRUCTIVIST MODEL (INQUIRY BASED): I will act as a “guide on the side” as students
research their chosen topic on their own. Students will be learning material (“hands on”) as they
research their health related focus.

  • 6. End result- Research Paper (plagiarism free)  HEALTH SEMESTER RESEARCH PROJECT You will research a health related topic of interest and complete a research paper. You are to cite no fewer than three reliable references in your research. A bibliography must be submitted with your paper. You have the remainder of the semester to complete this project, so do not procrastinate and use your time wisely. There may be class time given to research your project depending on our schedule. Before you begin research for your project, you will need to have received my approval on the subject material. Research Paper (100 points) The research paper is a cumulative overview of the information presented. The paper should be type written, double spaced, twelve point font, no more than 1-inch margins, and a minimum of five pages in length (this does not include the bibliography or title page). You should include all of the following criteria within the content of your paper; title, introduction, literature review, conclusion and bibliography. Title and Topic (5 pts.) • Create a title page that is appropriate and related to your subject material. • Include your name, date, class, and hour under the title page. Introduction (15 pts.) An introduction should provide some initial information to help us see where you are going with the project. • Tell us why you chose the subject. • What exactly drew you to the subject material? • What you had to do to find the material. • What types of resources you used. Literature Review (40 pts.) A literature review is similar to a summary. The main objective is to discuss what you have found from your research and how it applies to the subject material in your presentation. State the facts. You may see this as a summary; however, keep in mind that you are trying to find things that you do not already know about the subject. That is where your research will play a big role. We are looking for you to build upon already acquired knowledge and give an in depth look into

A proper conclusion will include the following: • The main points found in your literature review • Questions that the current research does not answer. And yes, you will have questions, if you take the time to think about what is left unanswered in the research you found. This is how new research is created. • Suggest what you believe is most useful in the material provided in your project and how it can be useful to society. Explain how your findings might be useful to the knowledge of your audience. • Anything you learned and found intriguing about the material. Bibliography (15 pts.) Use APA citation format. After completion of each lesson, constructive feedback will be given both verbally and in written format for the student to be successful Below is the rubric to assess the final product: Health Research Paper During the evaluation process the moderator (teacher) will be reviewing the research paper. It is possible that every paper will be different in that individual creativity is both encouraged and necessary in order for us to maintain an educational atmosphere, however, it is necessary for the author(student) to demonstrate the following parts in their research paper. The rubric below provides an objective based evaluation process. It is possible to get points in between the listed scores, if the score necessitates the adjustment. Evaluation Process Title Topic (5 points) ______ Points 5 points = there is a title which reflects the topic and he/she chose a topic which is applicable to health 3 points = the student is missing one of the two necessary components 0 points= the student does not show a title reflective of the topic material and did not choose a topic applicable to health Introduction (15 points) 15 points = the student provides introductory information that helps the reader understand the basic concepts of the research paper. Questions such as why they chose the topic, what drew their interest, how they found the material and what kinds of resources were used should be answered. 7 points = the student answers half of the questions or does not give the reader a clear idea about what the presentation is about
  • 9. 0 points = the student did not create an introduction that answered any initial questions of the reader, nor did the student explain how or why they chose the topic, where they found their research, etc. ______ Points Literature Review (40 points) 40 points = the literature review provides a detailed summary/abstract of the overall findings from the student’s research. The literature review should contain some citations to the student’s sources, especially if the findings were the ideas of the source. The student notes facts, figures and findings that they discovered from the research that was unknown or interesting. 20 points = the student does have a detailed summary, however, does not cite their sources directly within the text of their document, or is lacking some detail within the summary. 10 points or less = the student forgets to make citations, does not show research findings and/or does not complete a summarization of the material which he/she researched. ______ Points Conclusion (15 points) 15 points = the student reviews the main points from her/his research findings. He/she presents unanswered questions that arose from the research. The student states how the findings in the current research can be useful to the public’s health. The student states what was most useful from the research findings. 7 points = the student missed a few of the primary points needed for the conclusion. 0 points = the student did not have any type of conclusion. ______ Points Bibliography (15 points) 15 points = the student has a minimum of three cited sources. Each citation came from reliable sources. The citations were made in APA or MLA format. Citations were made within the text. 10 points = the student did not include citations in the text, or did not use APA or MLA format, or did not have reliable resources (i.e. magazines such as Men’s Fitness, Health, etc.). 5 or less points = the student had no visible references and all material was either invalid and unproven or worse plagiarized. ______ Points Written Product (10 points) 10 points: the student maintains appropriate grammar, spelling and sentence structure within the entire document. This would include, but is not limited to, correct punctuation and paragraph format.

One or two class periods will be given to work on this assignment, however the majority of this assignment will be completed outside of class. This Research paper counts as 100 points of the final examination Students will need to utilize the computer lab as well as the library and internet in order to complete this assignment Brief description of the primary teaching strategy(ies) DIDACTIC MODEL: “Sage on Stage”: I will be giving them the assignment and explaining what needs to be accomplished. During this assignment, knowledge and skill is being transferred from expert (myself) to novice. CONSTRUCTIVIST MODEL (INQUIRY BASED): I will act as a “guide on the side” as students research their chosen topic on their own. Students will be learning material (“hands on”) as they research their health related focus.
