In 2010/11, we surveyed over 100 grain growers in Northern NSW and QLD to find out their awareness and knoweledge of root-lesion nematodes and see how they wanted to be communicated with about them.
Using this information we created three 7 foot high information banners for researchers to errect at field days, wrote two artciles for the Groundcover publication and created an iPad display which had an interactive factsheet, videos of researchers talking about how growers can manage nematodes and test for nematodes anfd a range of Google maps which showed where root-lesion nematodes had been found.
We also educated the researchers in using Google maps so they could visualise their soil testing data.
Finally, we proposed to our client that they consider a website and mobile app.

Root-lesion nematodes communication
1. Bringing science to life
GRDC Northern Panel
Nematodes Awareness Campaign
21st February 2011
2. Bringing science to life
What we have done
• Information Banners
• Surveyed 112 grain growers and advisors
• Groundcover articles
• iPad information display
• Google map
• Website and App Proposal
15 February 2011 NWQMS Workshop, Brisbane 2
4. Bringing science to life
What communication works
• What are the most popular ways growers and advisors get information
about root-lesion nematodes?
• GRDC research updates
• Ground Cover
• Consultants/ agronomists
• DEEDI staff, I&I NSW staff
• Field Days
• Factsheets
• How would growers like information communicated to them?
• GRDC updates
• Fact sheets
• via agronomist
• Field days
• Website
15 February 2011 NWQMS Workshop, Brisbane 4
5. Bringing science to life
What they want to know
• Tolerant and resistant crop varieties
• Farming practices conductive to reducing
nematodes populations
• How to manage for nematodes
• Symptoms
• Impact on yield
15 February 2011 NWQMS Workshop, Brisbane 5
6. Bringing science to life
Challenges
• Knowing the difference between Tolerant and
Resistant
• Knowing what crops are at risk of yield loss
and/or increasing nematode numbers
• Getting soils tested

12. Bringing science to life
Website and App proposal
• iPad and iPhone app
•Helpful information aid for researchers
and for advisors
•Can be interactive with Google Maps
and Rotation Calculator i.e. what is a
suitable crop to grow this season to
reduce nematodes or maximise yields

Discussion questions Are you comfortable with these 3 overall groups? How important do you see the ‘other’ group? How do we get names and contact details of people for the database? (need for survey/interviews) How many users are there?
