Modified epoxy bowling balls were developed starting in 1996 to create more hook potential in oil conditions. Epoxy is normally a very hard and chemically resistant material with low friction, but the modified epoxy used in these balls contains secret ingredients that give it high friction and an ability to rapidly absorb oil. Over 900 different ball formulas were tested before finding ones that could create maximum friction in oil without hooking too early. The modified epoxy shells allow for more midlane hook compared to other ball materials and their performance can be fine-tuned based on the specific additives used.
