• ESP in brief is the use of particular variety of
English in specific context of use and
justified by learners needs
• English for Specific Purpose is a sphere of
teaching English language including
Business English, Technical English,
Scientific English, English for Medical
Professionals, English for Writers, English
for Tourism, English for art purposes etc.

•What distinguishes ESP is learner’s
needs
•ESP requires analysing language that
is required in the area/profession
•Conducting student’s needs analysis
•Conducting interviews with subject
matter specialists in the area

• ESP is an approach to language
teaching in which all decisions as to
content and method are based on the
learner’s reason for learning
(Tom Hutchinson and Alan Walters,
1990)

• EAP stand for English for Academic
Purpose
• EAP refers to any English teaching that
relates to a study purpose
• Students whose first language is not English
may need help with both the languages of
academic disciplines and specific study
skills required for the course
• EAP is one movement within ESP

7. DEFINITIONS
• EAP is a branch of English for Specific
Purposes
• It is useful for both linguistic and non-
linguistic study skills
• It is of International standards
• It is most helpful for the people who are not
educated in English and don’t have English
as their first language
• It includes EU and Erasmus students

8. USE OF ESP. - RECOMMENDED
FOR :
• To meet specific needs of the learners
• It makes use of underlying methodology and activities
of the discipline it serves
• Centered on the language appropriate to these
activities in terms of grammar, texts, register, study
skills, discourse and genre

FOR :
