Adjustment Disorder occurs when
symptoms of depression or anxiety develop
in response to a clearly identifyable event.
Help the person see the bigger picture by
exploring what they are committed to in
life and how those things have been
impacted (or not) by the event.
Imagine life as a TV series. The event
marked the end of a season. Explore the
plot & characters for the upcoming
season.
Identify practical resources including social
support, education about the situation,
assistance identifying and addressing
cognitive distortions and other resources
necessary to help the person experience
the event AND still live a rich and
meaningful life.
The event was/is a stressor and quality
sleep, good nutrition and exercise are
essential to creating a mind-body
environment that supports adjustment.
Common adjustment issues: Starting
college, moving, marriage, divorce, child
birth, changing jobs, losses, physical
health changes, aging (especially midlife)
