Rizal began his studies at the University of Santo Tomas in 1877 taking Philosophy and Letters. In 1878, he transferred to the medical program. He also completed a surveying course at Ateneo in 1881. While studying, he encountered discrimination from Spanish professors and wrote poems expressing his nationalism. In 1882, he decided to continue his medical studies abroad in Spain to escape the hostile environment at UST.

 April 1877- Rizal who was then nearly
16 years old, matriculated in the
University of Santo Tomas, taking the

 Rizal enrolled in this course for 2
reasons:
 1. His father liked it
 2. He was “still uncertain as to what
career to pursue”.

(1877-78)- Rizal studied Cosmology,
Metaphysics, Theodicy, and History of
Philosophy in the University of Santo
Tomas during his first- year term.
(1878-79)- Rizal took up the medical
course.

6.  FINISHES SURVEYING COURSE IN
ATENEO (1878)
 (1877-78) – Rizal took he vocational
course leading to the title of perito
agrimensor (expert surveyor).
 November 25, 1881- At the age of 17
Rizal passed the final examination in
the surveying course.
