  1. What is Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana? ‘ Matritva’ means motherhood and ‘Sahyog’ support. This name of the Scheme itself tells us what the Scheme aims to do. If you have to tell/explain any one about the Scheme say it is a pilot Scheme of M/WCD to support women in their motherhood through Conditional Cash Transfer (CCT). CCT means beneficiary will get Cash incentive upon fulfillment of specific conditions
  2. Slide 2: Why was this scheme initiated? In India, every third woman is undernourished. An undernourished mother almost inevitably gives birth to a low birth weight baby. When poor nutrition starts in-utero, it extends throughout the life cycle, particularly in women. We all know that due to poverty many women continue to work outside home during pregnancy and resume working soon after delivery. Due to the time and economic constraints they cannot take good care of themselves and their newly born baby. The total cash incentive amount is `4000, which will be provided to beneficiaries who enroll under the Scheme in three installments subject to fulfillment of specific conditions . Poor Maternal nutrition and infant mortality continue to be a challenge In India, every third woman is undernourished and every second woman is anemic A woman with poor nutrition has a greater risk adverse pregnancy outcomes both for her self and her infant. Early marriage can make the woman even more vulnerable. And in India nearly one out of every two young married women below 25 years are married before 18 years. Research evidence shows that early initiation, exclusive breastfeeding and timely initiation of complementary foods can prevent 19% of under-five deaths (as per lancet 2010). However, these three critical practices are also practiced by only 21% mothers Poor women continue to work to earn a living for their family right up to the last days of their pregnancy and resume working soon after child birth. While Janani Suraksha Yojana provides a one-time cash incentive for institutional births. A need for introducing modest maternity benefits to partly compensate for their wage loss was recommended by the Planning Commission in the XI th Five Year Plan. In view of this, a new scheme for pregnant and lactating mothers called Indira Gandhi Matritva Sahyog Yojana (IGMSY) – Conditional Maternity Benefit Scheme was formulated

Slide 3: The objective of the IGMSY scheme is to improve the health and nutrition status of pregnant and lactating women and their young infants by: Promoting appropriate practices, care and service utilisation during pregnancy, safe delivery and lactation. Encouraging the women to follow (optimal) IYCF practices including early and exclusive breast feeding for the first six months. Contributing to better enabling environment by providing cash incentives for improved health and nutrition to pregnant and lactating mothers.

All government / PSU / SPSU employees will be excluded IGMSY will be implemented as a pilot initially in 52 districts (pilot) across the country. Approx. 13.80 lakh women will be covered in 1 st year
  5. The first installment of Rs. 1500/- will be given at the end of the second trimester if the pregnant women fulfil 5 conditions. Women enrolled under IGMSY will be also encouraged to avail JSY package for institutional delivery. However, there is no cash incentive under IGMSY for institutional delivery since cash incentive for this is already provided under JSY.
  6. The second installment of Rs. 1500/- will be given 3 months after delivery if the women fulfil six conditions. These are: Birth registered at AWC/Health Centre Child received Oral Polio Vaccine &amp; BCG Child received OPV &amp; DPT-1 Child received OPV &amp; DPT-2 Child weighed at least 2 times after birth (out of optimal 4 times including weighing at birth) Mother attended at least 2 counseling sessions at AWC/VHND for IYCF promotion (out of optimal 3 times).
