Finding the Percent in
     Percent Problems
To solve __% of A is B.
 Change:
   __ to x,
   of to * (multiplication)
   is to =
Do the algebra to solve the equation.
 Write x as a percent.
Find the percent: __% of 60 is 8.4
Write the equation and solve it:

               x (60) 8.4
               60 x 8.4
               60 x 8.4
                60 60
               x .14
               x 14%
What percent of 20 is 23?
Write the equation and solve it:
              __ % of 20 is 23
              x (20) 23
              20 x 23
              20 x 23
               20 20
              x 1.15
              x 115%
Note: the percent can be greater than 100%
34 is what percent of 68?
Write the equation and solve it:
                  34 is __% of 68
                  34 x (68)
                  34 68 x
                 34 68 x
                  68 68
                 34 17 1
                                   x
                  68 34 2
                 .5 x
                 50% x
This is basically changing a fraction to
a percent.
From a previous tweet, we know
change a fraction to a percent, divide,
and write the decimal as a percent.

               __% of whole = part
Note: the ‘part’ can be larger than the whole.
When the part IS larger than the whole, then the
 percent is greater than 100%.
Examples:
1. The producer expected 500 410 is __% of 500
   people at the concert. 410 people 410 x (500)
attended. 410 is what percent of 410
                                             x
   the expected number? 500
                                       .82 x
                                        82%

2. To advertise her pastry shop, what% of 400 is 142
   Heather planned to spend $400. 400 x 142
For newspaper ads she spent 142
   $142. What percent of the $400 x
                                        400
   has she spent? x .355
                                       35.5%
Examples:
3. The height of the original
picture is 4 inches. Bill wants to
enlarge it, on the __% of 4 is 7
   photocopier, to make it 7
                                        4x 7
inches high. What percent of 4
   inches is 7 inches? 7
                                        x
                                            4
                                        x 1.75
                                          175%

The photocopier should be set at 175%.
