Why should I use a sunless tanner?
It’s no secret that overexposure to the sun’s rays is
damaging to skin. Any change in the color of your skin
is a sign of damage from ultraviolet radiation. With
repeated exposure to UV rays, either from the sun or
tanning beds, you are at a much higher risk for skin
cancer and premature aging. Sunless tanners give you
that sun-kissed color without sacrificing your skin’s
health.


Step 1: Exfoliate
Exfoliation is crucial to getting the best
results from your self tanning lotion. Use a
body scrub to exfoliate dry skin and reveal a
fresh, smooth layer of skin. Pay extra
attention to areas that are frequently
exposed and particularly dry, like elbows,
knees and feet.

Step 2: Shave
Don’t forget to shave before applying
sunless tanner. Shaving immediately after
you bronze will ruin your faux glow. Wait
a day or two before shaving or waxing
again to preserve your tan and avoid
irritation.


Step 3: Choose your self tanner
If you’re starting from scratch, a
gradual self tanning lotion will
provide a more natural-looking

Step 4: Apply smoothly for a streak-
free sunless tan
Start with your feet and work your way up to avoid any
creases from bending over. Spread the product evenly onto
clean, dry skin using broad strokes in all directions. By
applying the lotion in a fluid motion, you’ll ensure that you’re
covering all areas. You can also use gloves to protect your
palms from soaking up all the color.


Step 5: Wash your hands
A common beginner’s mistake when
applying self tanner is forgetting to
wash your hands. Don’t forget to
wash off any remaining lotion with
soap and water, making sure to
scrub the tops of your hands and in
between your fingers as well.


Step 6: Clean up streaks
It’s easy to make mistakes when applying self
tanning lotion, so don’t worry about the
occasional streak. For a quick fix, exfoliate any
skin that is a shade too dark. This will help
clean up streaks or areas where your sunless
tan looks unnatural.


Step 6: Maintain
your sunless tan
To keep up your faux glow,
reapply self tanning lotion every
other day. Self tanning towelettes
can be reapplied once a week. It’s
important to keep your skin
moisturized as well.


Don’t forget sunscreen
Remember to always use a broad
spectrum sunscreen when exposed to

cannot replace a good sunscreen. Most
sunless tanning products do not have an
SPF and will not protect your skin from
the sun’s damaging UVA and UVB rays.

Are self tanners safe?
Recent studies show that the active chemical in sunless tanning
spray, DHA, has the potential to cause gene mutations. The FDA has
approved DHA for external use, so rubbing self-tanner lotion, cream
or foam onto your body is currently considered safe.

“A spray tan is still safer than a tanning bed,” Dr. Joel Schlessinger
said in a recent blog post. If you get a spray tan, be sure to follow
the FDA guidelines: wear a nose plug, eye protection, Vaseline on
your lips, and underwear.
