Mass Communication and
Social Problems :
Pornography
What is pornography?
Basically
Pornography is the depiction of sexual behavior
that is intended to arouse sexual excitement in
its audience.
Introduction
 No one remains untouched by it.
 Unlike at any other time in history, pornography is now available and
consumed widely in our society, due in large part to the internet and
also in form of printed literature.
 Although pornography has existed for millennia, never has it been
as widely available or used as it has been in recent years
 Today, the number of people looking at pornography is staggering.
Americans rent upwards of 800 million pornographic videos
General ILL effects
 Porn is a dangerous business
 On average, 66% of porn performers have herpes, and 7% of porn performers
have HIV.
 An Ex-porn star says men and women in pornography do drugs because “they
can’t deal with the way they’re being treated” in the industry.
 A 2012 survey of porn actresses demonstrated 79% of porn stars have used
marijuana, 50% have used ecstasy, 44% have used cocaine, and 39% have
used hallucinogens.
 When hundreds of scenes were analyzed from the 50 top selling adult films, 88%
of scenes contained acts of physical aggression, and 49% of scenes contained
verbal aggression.
The Truth
 Women are less than human
 Women are a "sport“
 Women are property
 Women like rape
“Women are shown being raped, fighting and kicking at first, and then starting to
like it. Porn teaches men to enjoying hurting and abusing women for
entertainment.
 Prostitution is glamorous
Porn paints an exciting picture of prostitution. In reality, many of the women
portrayed in pornographic material are runaway girls trapped in a life of slavery.
Many having been sexually abused. Some of them are infected with incurable
sexually transmitted diseases that are highly contagious and often die very
young. Many take drugs just to cope.
the Silver Screen & Idiot Box
 Statistics show that the hits on website of a porn actress who recently
made her Bollywood debut were increased exponentially after the
release.
 This was the success of her marketing strategy.
 Earlier people who didn’t knew her, after the movie release , the name
had become common.
 People behind The idiot box and silver screen management obviously
have to be responsible for what they are presenting.
 This has contributed significantly to her career and the porn industry
too.
The Beginning of Pornography on
the Internet
• Image quality was restricted by the size of files that could be posted
due to the band with size in the ‘90s.
• Pornography grew rapidly in the 90s once internet was available to the
general public.
• Able to watch porn movies on their home computer rather than waiting
weeks for an order from a magazine.
A few facts
in Internet
What groups do pornography affect?
Families
• Help to eliminate an
affectionate family life
• Decreased marital intimacy
and sexual satisfaction
• Infidelity
• Devaluation of monogamy,
marriage and child rearing
• Marital distress and
separation leading to
divorce
Community
• Presence of sexually-
orientated businesses
significantly harms the
surrounding community
which leads to increases
in crime and decreases in
property values
• Sexual crimes and
violence are increased
• Rape, drug use
Individuals
• Centerfold Syndrome
• Voyeurism: the obsession with
visual stimulation that trivializes all
other features of a healthy
relationship
• Objectification: obsessive fetishes
over body parts and the rating of
women by size and shape
• Trophyism : treatment of women as
collectibles and property
• Fear of Intimacy: inability to get
beyond glossy, centerfold images of
women to have a real relationship
Consumption of internet pornography, How it
can harm women in particular?
Internet pornography can cause particular harm to women, be they
girlfriends or wives of consumers, or consumers themselves.
Several researchers report that women typically feel betrayal, loss,
mistrust, devastation, and anger as a result of the discovery of a
partner’s pornography use and/or online sexual activity.
“internet pornography is often associated with activities that
undermine marital exclusivity and fidelity and increase the risk of
contracting and transmitting sexual diseases.
Consumption of internet pornography
How it can harm children in particular?
There can be no doubt that children and adolescents are far more exposed to pornography via the
internet, certain shows of some TV channels than they ever have been before.
One 2014 study by Columbia University, for example, found that 1.5 million teenagers (45%) have
friends who regularly view internet pornography and download it.
Despite the illegality of marketing sexually explicit material to minors, the pornography industry does
not effectively deny access to young consumers.
Approximately 75% of pornographic websites display visual teasers on the homepages before asking if
the viewers are of legal age; only 3% of such websites require proof-of-age before granting access
to sexually explicit material, and two-thirds of pornographic websites do not include any adult-content
warnings.
Effect on teenagers
 Emotional Trauma
 Having sex earlier
 Higher risk for sexual compulsions and addictions
 Distorted view of sexual relationships
 Apart from sexual attachment
 Deviant sexual practices seem normal
Major harms
 Catering to fetishes by content providers
 Child pornography
 Sexual crimes
 Objectification of women
Extent of the problem
In a reply to a public interest litigation
 Speaking in the court on Friday, Aug 29, the government spokesperson said,
"There are around four crore websites and when we block one, a new one
comes along.“
 The PIL also mentioned the infamous Dec 16, 2012 gangrape in Delhi. It was
reported that all six offenders had seen porn in their mobile phones before
committing such heinous crime.
 The Chief Justice of India was quoted as saying, "Law, technology and
governance have to be synthesised to control pornographic materials on the
Internet."
Thank you
