The old ways die hard don’t they? There are millions of business owners out there
who still don’t know what SEO stands for or how it fits into their marketing
schema. What they do know is that it is related to the way in which potential
consumers are driven to their website. SEO is different from SEM in just one
crucial way. SEO, unlike SEM, is completely free. Just like everything else in this
world, what seems free from the beginning always seems to cost you something.
SEO differs from SEM in that it is a way to increase the way that search engines
drive traffic without the exchange of any money to or from anyone.
What is SEM
SEM is not the same as SEO. SEO stands for search engine optimization. It is a
practice that involves using various mediums and ways to drive internet users to a
specific site. There is no fee for using SEO, but there is a lot of time consumption,
creativity sucking and in the end, sometimes heartache, involved. SEO does not
always lead to where you want it to go. It also is not a stagnant thing. You can’t
optimize your site once and forget it. If you are using purely those means that are
traditionally SEO categorized then you are likely to only stay on top for fractions
at a time, if at all.
SEM stands for search engine marketing. It is a whole different animal search
engine marketing involves things such as pay per click ads and other forms of paid
advertising to trigger search engines to see your site and rank it more highly.
Although working much better when someone is using certain types of searches,
for organic searches, there is no real evidence that paying for advertising does
much. If you are looking for the best action for your budget then hiring an SEO
company may work out better for your ranking than paying for SEM. What is hot
today may not be tomorrow. That is why it is best to have a company watching
out specifically for you and where you rank.
Which type do you need?
The truth is that you need a combination of both SEO and SEM to create the best
campaign for your marketing on the internet. SEM pays off better in terms of
social media marketing which seems to have the highest relevance for advertising
searches, while SEO seems to do a good job for those who are looking purely to
rank highly on organic searches. If you are limited in funds and think that SEO is
the only way to go, remember that your time is worth money. Sometimes all the
“man-hours” that you send on “free SEO” can better be spent throwing some of it
into SEM and using your time more wisely to better focus on your business,
product or service. To get the most out of internet marketing it is best to use a
combination of both SEM and SEO schemas to get your company ranked where
you want it to be.
