CaregiverStress- How does it impact the daily livesof caregivers?Whatare the
early signsand ways to preventit?
As the elderlypopulationincreases,manyof these individualswill require care
while livingintheir home environment. Majorityof caregivers providingcare are
elderlywomenwho are caring for their spouse whom has dementiaor is
terminallyill/endoflife. While providingcare to theirlovedone, many of the
caregiversare faced with barriers which can greatly impact their livesphysically,
socially,emotionally,andpsychologically.This can be very demandingand place a
great deal ofstress on their everydaylife.Inresult many experience Caregiver
Stress. Early signs ofcaregiver’sstress are depression,anxiety,sleepdeprivation,
weightgain or loss,lossof appetite,frequentheadaches,alcohol and drug abuse,
and decreasedsocialization. Hospice care can be an optionwhen the caregiver has
difficultyinprovidingcare to theirlovedone who is terminallyill. Copingstrategies
to assist the caregiverare keepingactive,settingpersonal goals,seekingsocial
support, maintainingrelationshipswithsignificantothers,joiningsupport groups,
and staying in touch with your doctor. There are many resourcesand supports
available to the caregiverwho is experiencing caregiverstresssuch as counselling,
support groups, and respite care.
