PDF file for ASME SECTION IX and what is ASME. It will also give you information about WPS, PQR and WPQ. here you will get all that you want to know about WELDING DOCUMENTS.
2. INTRODUCTION:
• ASME SECTION IX contains the rule relating to
the qualification of welding,brazing,and fusing
procedures as required by other BPVC section for
component manufacture.
• It also covers rules relating to the qualification
and requalification of welders, brazers,and
welding, brazing and fusing machine operators in
order that they may perform welding, brazing or
plastic fusing as required by other BPVC sections
in the manufacture of components.
4. About the BPVC
ASME’S boilers and pressure vessel code
has pioneered modern standards
development,maintaining a commitment
to enhance public safety and technological
advancement to meet the needs of a
changing world.
More than 100000 copies of the BPVC
are in use in 100 countries around the
world.
5. ASME section IX contains:
Part QG: contains general requirements
of all material joining processes
Part QW: contains requirement for
welding
Part QB: contains requirement for brazing
Part QF: contains requirement for plastic
fusing
6. Welding documents:
Since our focus is on welding so we will
discuss about the welding procedure.
To qualify welding procedureASME uses
the following documents:
WPS- welding procedure specification
PQR- procedure qualification record
WPQ-welder performance
qualification(record)
7. WPS-Welding Procedure
Specification
WPS is a formal written document
describing welding parameters which
provides direction to the welding operator
or/and welder for making sound and quality
weld as per code/standard requirement.
WPS is made for each welding material
alloy and for each welding process.
It is supported/qualified by PQR.
8. WPS describes/contains:
Welding process(es) used
Base material used
The joint design
The joint geometry
Gases used and their flow rates
Welding positions
Process variables
9. PQR- Procedure Qualification
Record
PQR is a document that qualifiesWPS.
The entire process of qualifying the
proposedWPS is known as procedure
qualification.
The real time data/variable record
during welding of a test coupon along
with lab report of testing is known as
PQR.
10. PQR contains/describes:
All the real time values of all essential
variables recorded during the welding of
test coupon
Values of all non-essential variables during
welding
Values of supplementary essential
variables during welding
Lab test report of welded test coupon
11. Variable and its type:
What is variable: it is the value which may
change.
In welding, the parameters have the
tendency to change so the welding
parameters who changes with ongoing
welding process are known as variables.
Types:
1.essential variables : these are the
variables who affect the mechanical
properties of the weld joint. Hence the
WPS must be requalified if the essential
variables is changed.
12. 2. Nonessential variables:These are the
variables who affects the mechanical
properties of welding joint.
Hence a change in nonessential variable
should not require re-qualification of
WPS.
3. Supplementary variables:These are the
variables who affect the toughness
properties of welding joint.
13. Why procedure qualification is
required?
To ensure the mechanical properties of
weld joint.
To ensure the quality of weld joint.
To know about process variables.
14. WPQ-welder performance
qualification(Record)
WPQ is carried out for checking the
capability of the person to produce a
sound weld joint.
It demonstrate the skill of welder.
For making theWPQ all the data is
recorded when welding process is going
on as perWPS.
15. WPQ describes:
Qualification of welder to perform
welding regarding toWPS.
Name of welder or code of welder
Qualification limits requirements.
Welding time to be taken as an standard
welding time.
16. Abbreviation used:
WPS-Welding Procedure Specification
PQR-Procedure Qualification Record
WPQ-Welder Performance Qualification
