Improving Reading Comprehension by Using Media Literacy Activities By Renee Hobbs Some literacy educators still hold to the idea that audiovisual media and digital technologies are the enemies of print culture, but a growing number of educators are exploring the synergistic relationship between different forms of reading that occur when the concept of text is expanded to include images, graphic design, multimodality, moving image media, and online content. At home, parents cultivate children's understanding of story structure by engaging in activities that involve children's re-telling of books, cartoons, games, and short films. They pause children's videos to ask questions, comment on action and predict what will happen next. Such practices cultivate viewing as a cognitively active process, a concept that was first articulated in the 1970s but continues to be more deeply appreciated with the rise of YouTube culture, where the distinction between authors and audiences is diminished. During the elementary grades, teachers use media literacy competencies when reading children's picturebooks, calling attention to when the words of a story and the image of the story conflict or deliver different messages. Active "reading" of picture books is a practice that foregrounds the meaning-making process and elevates reading comprehension beyond mere decoding. When educators reframe their work with youth as less about passing high-stakes tests and more about learning to navigate the multiple literacy contexts in which they live, learn, and work, students' motivation for reading increases. For this reason, literacy specialists are exploring links between disciplinary literacy, inquiry, and media literacy. Media literacy instructional practices honor students' popular culture and lived experience, and offer opportunities for students to bring their affect, emotion, imagination, and social interaction into reading practices that examine and challenge cultural conventions like materialism and consumerism that are reproduced in media culture on a daily basis.

In this talk presented at the Digital Media and Learning (DML) conference in Los Angeles on June 12, 2015, Professor Renee Hobbs explores three aspects of civic education as students learn to consume news, gain an understanding of consumer finance, and develop skills as digital media communicators. Hobbs explains that school-based civic education programs are shifting from emphasis on transmission of civic content towards a focus on cultivating skills & dispositions. She describes how a variety of partnerships with the business and philanthropic community are bringing new approaches to teaching and learning of civic education. She notes that these approaches use civic education to address a particular problem of interest to the funder and claims that the most sustainable school-based programs are developed by educators who engage in partnership programs while crafting learning experiences to meet the civic education needs of the students they serve.

Educators are themselves citizens who express and share political views as part of their personal identity. They may care deeply about issues including climate change, immigration/migration, growing economic inequality, health and wellness, racism, sexism and other forms of discrimination, or other topics of concern. But in the classroom, some educators do not feel confident or comfortable exploring controversial issues with students, while others make clear their particular positions on political issues without necessarily reflecting on the inequality in power relationships that may silence their students. The practice of critical media analysis and reflection help teachers navigate both the opportunities and the challenges of exploring contemporary controversies in the classroom. Teachers benefit greatly from safe and structured opportunities to talk about the ethical and moral implications of their decisions to address or ignore controversial issues in the classroom.

Dr. William Allan Kritsonis earned his BA in 1969 from Central Washington University, Ellensburg, Washington. In 1971, he earned his M.Ed. from Seattle Pacific University. In 1976, he earned his PhD from the University of Iowa. In 1981, he was a Visiting Scholar at Teachers College, Columbia University, New York, and in 1987 was a Visiting Scholar at Stanford University, Palo Alto, California. In June 2008, Dr. Kritsonis received the Doctor of Humane Letters, School of Graduate Studies from Southern Christian University. The ceremony was held at the Hilton Hotel in New Orleans, Louisiana.

Scholars across many disciplines have grappled with questions of what it means for a person to be and interact online. Who are we when we go online? How do others know we are there and how do they perceive us? Within the context of online learning, scholarly questions tend to reflect more specific concerns focused on how well people can learn in a setting limited to mediated interactions lacking various communication cues. For example, how can a teacher and students come to know each other if they cannot see each other? How can they effectively understand and communicate with each other if they are separated by space and, in many instances, time? These concerns are related to issues of social presence and identity, both of which are complex, multi-faceted, closely interrelated constructs.

In the education circles, the reason behind teaching a student is to equip them with the necessary tools essential in a particular field one selects as one secures a job in the workforce based on their learning. The key intention is to impact students with the necessary education needed in the world today. The way in which students are taught in universities in the current settings take different forms especially when considering such factors as the way the current generation has been brought up – in the advent of advanced technologies and vindictive protectiveness. Personal rights are being established as students exercise their rights from all areas. This has disrupted the education systems especially in universities where lecturers and professors and now cautious of their language and what they teach. Students too are caught in between as they demand to set the pace within which they will be taught. This means that students now play a key role in dictating to lecturers the system to use in teaching and in some instances, the words to use and materials. The author asserts that students getting into universities today are more “desirous of protection and more hostile towards ideological opponents….…”(Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt. 2015). This means that self-righteousness and hostility triggered by strong partisan emotions creates a moral crusade where people tend to express their allegiance to a group. He stipulates that such an assertion can indeed interfere with student’s ability to think critically. His view is that students should acknowledge other people’s views and learn how to cope with the diversity of this world. He examines the Socratic method of teaching whereby students are taught how to think and this fosters critical thinking. This encourages students to examine other people’s beliefs critically though at times it may trigger discomfort and anger in reference to way of understanding. Students should be prepared intellectually for professional life as they are going to meet people with ideas and assumptions that they might find wrong (Greg Lukianoff and Jonathan Haidt. 2015). In a campus setting, this may be considered as hate speech as one is culpable of committing an offence against another student or lecturer. The culture being fostered at campus is that of policing speech and punishing speakers which shapes ones patterns of thoughts. Prologue In response to a prompt in a recent class, Akira, a young college student, related how our everyday experiences with peers and in activities can deeply affect how we develop: In the world that technology has taken over our communications, I usually feel lonely. Yesterday I was in a room with my group of friends. Every one of us was on the phone, either texting or on social media. It was really bad. There were no words tossing around the room, it was just complete silence. There were so many opportunities to connect to the people next to you, yet people were on their phones for no reason. Then, I thought about loneliness as I looked around the room. Being on the phone is a way to isolate us from the community. We might have hundreds of friends on social media, but how many REAL friends do we have? I think we become more lonely when we get into our phones. At least, I do. I feel sad that we are missing out on living in the moment. It happens whether we are in a room by ourselves or in a room full of people. Whenever my partner is on the phone—not even talking—for a long period of time, I get lonely to the point that I feel like I am not loved or I cannot talk about my concerns. He is right next to me, and there is complete silence for hours. What can we do in those few hours without being on the phone? He didn’t have a phone when we met. We were totally different back then compared to how we are today. I get really sad when I think how communication has changed. Akira’s poignant response reveals to us how individual circumstances can have a profound effect on development for some, and have little effect for others. It also reminds us that we are all affected by the ways in which technology has transformed social interaction, among young people especially. Just as the advancement of automobiles and the telephone transformed social networks during the 20th century, the Information Age is no doubt affecting part of the foundation of psychosocial growth for today’s generation of children. John Diamandis English The definition of creativity is creating something original and useful. What this means is that creativity is not limited to the arts, it includes all disciplines. When using this definition we can see why we would want creativity in our school systems. The alternative to that would be students who lack the ability to create anything. The world needs people who can create new things. This world is built upon it. Imagine if cars, planes or even cellphones were never invented. Bill Gates said “Innovation has been and will continue to be the key to improving the world.” But how do you teach creativity? Creativity can not be taught. It doesn’t come from a classic room setting like math or English. In order to add creativity in schools you need to have collaboration, diverse environment, interdisciplinary exchange, and encouragement. Collaboration in schools is not a big topic in the national education discussion, and that’s unfortunate, because it’s a key to effective schools. In low-income schools research has shown that the greatest improvement in student outcomes generally come from deep collaboration between administrators, teachers, and students. What this means is that in order for students to be successful there must be communication between the staff and the students. Anthony S. Bryk, the president of the Carnegie Foundation for the Advancement of Teaching identified five organizational features of schools that is critical in advancing student achievement, three of which I found to be the most important. The first stated that that we need a coherent instructional guidance system where everything including grades, homework, and tests are graded with meaningful teacher input. If teachers are actively adding input or advice on everything that students do it helps to breed more successful students. The second point Bryk made was that not only should the students be getting input but also the teachers. The teachers should be collaborating with other staff members to gain ongoing support and guidance by other colleagues. The third point was about parental involvement in schools and the parents working together with the schools to improve on the educational system. When parents, teachers, and administrators all work together the outcome is a successful school. When reading these three points you can see how important collaboration is in schools. Diverse environment is also an important aspect to adding creativity in schools. Many colleges and universities share a common belief, born of experience, that diversity in their student bodies, faculties, and staff is important for them to fulfill their primary mission. Diversity is important because it enriches the educational experience. We learn from those whose experiences, beliefs, and views are different from our own, and these lessons can be taught best in a diverse intellectual and social environment. The first part of this paper aims to examine the concept of the globalised world from a number of different angles and poses questions related to the relevance and validity of the curriculum currently presented to EFL students. A number of methodological suggestions related to the field of education with a big E will be observed such as motivation, metacognition, learner autonomy, use of widely accessible resources and “The University of Life”. Thus the role of the teacher in ELT will shift towards that of faclitator and educator, raising awareness in self and in students of the need to become global citizens who are lifelong learners and putting the learner at the centre of the educational process. The second part of this paper examines the overriding factor of using English as a global language to examine global issues through the practice of critical, comparative and creative thinking skills. The framework for the paper is based on Robert Fisher’s thinking skills language learning model.
