The goal of the campaign was to raise awareness about listening to
children and young people as the first step to help them grow up healthy
and safe.

Listen First – World Drug Campaign 2017
This effort is aimed at parents, teachers, policy makers, health and
prevention workers, highlighting how to recognize and prevent, high-risk
behaviors and substance abuse.

Listen First – World Drug Campaign 2017
Through an image accompanied by messages, the target is invited to
follow a series of recommendations on prevention, as well as to share
messages with third parties through their channels, facilitating their
access to the graphic material and related content.

Central message of the campaign: "Listen to children and young
people with empathy and care can help prevent risk behaviors and drug
use"
Each country selected one or more target audiences: decision
makers, parents, teachers and health workers.
Once the target has been selected, each country had to search and
select for an image / photo and write a text / story / situation adapting
the message to the target selected to be used in their country to spread
the campaign.

Listen First Campaign - Outcomes

  1. Listen First campaing: Relevance of advocacy work, international cooperation & alignment with Sustainable Development Goals. Following previous contacts held at the UNODC – CND 60th Session last march in Vienna, Dianova accepted the “challenge” to enhance the reach and impact of the prevention efforts by joining the UNODC and WHO campaign #ListenFirst, launched on the occasion of 26th of June celebration of the International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Narcotics Trafficking 2017. "Listen first" is well adapted to the different socio-political environments of the countries in the Dianova Network, in addition UNODC is a key player in global drug policy that brings together all stakeholders in this area. On the other hand, prevention efforts should bring together the maximum number of participants in a preventive action aligned with the SDOs, as recommended by UNODC Executive Director, Yury Fedotov. This initiative supports science-based drug use prevention, and thus represents an effective investment in the well-being of children and young people, their families and communities. This campaign is aimed at parents, teachers, policy makers, health and prevention workers, highlighting how to recognize and prevent, high-risk behaviors and substance abuse.
  2. For more than ten years, the Dianova International network has implemented or joined health promotion and addiction prevention initiatives to raise awareness of the risks associated with addictive behaviours, including licit and illicit substance abuse, and "substance-free" addictions such as compulsive gambling and problematic internet use.   3. The resulting UNGASS document recommends measures to address demand and supply reduction and to improve access to controlled drugs. The recommendations also include the areas of; human rights, young people and children, women and communities; emerging challenges, including new psychoactive substances; strengthening international cooperation; and alternative development. The text emphasizes, in a new way, condemnatory policies and practices in drug-related offenses and has a strong focus on prevention and treatment.
  4. To be effective, drug prevention efforts should bring together the maximum number of participants possible. In line with this, the Dianova network has joined efforts to participate in this campaign in 14 countries (Europe, Americas, Africa and Asia) adapting the campaign to their different socio-political environments.   5. Alignment with Sustainable Development Goals. Local Messages The problem of drug use is global and interconnected with all aspects of sustainable development. Their analysis and consequent response, through the Sustainable Development Goals (SDG), reveal this interaction, transversalizing the nature and dynamics of the problem at the individual, community, national and international level. In the following slides we will present the graphic materials used and their alignment with the Sustainable Development Goals.

  40. Basically it has been used 4 major channels for the dissemination of the campaign. Each participating country has chosen those that best suit it. Dianova International has centralized in its international office the elaboration of all the written and graphic materials. Posters to be placed in visible places. In some participants as SPYM in India, they have organized events around its main messages. A press release was written in 6 languages for local and international media. Image adaptations with messages in 6 languages for the main social media networks.

  43. Social Media Visibility The social network that worked best was Facebook with 76% of scope, followed by other channels and in particular visits to the different websites of participating countries.
  44. Dianova is an international NGO which comprises associations and foundations operating in the Americas, Europe, Asia and Africa. Dianova’s member organizations contribute to the development of individuals, communities and organizations through a variety of programmes and interventions in the social, health and humanitarian sectors. This year 2017, 4 new members have joined the Dianova network with Associate Members status.
