4. Purpose
Hand Dryer
They eliminated the need to purchase
paper towels for the customers to dry their
hands.
Paper Towel
Tissue with 1,000 sheets was introduced
at a cost of 10 cents per roll. It was
considered a medical item; print ads were
used to increase awareness.
5. Pros and Cons for Hand Dryer
Pros
According to manufacturers,hand dryers
can cut costs by as much as 99.5% (for
example a company may spend $2340.00
per year on paper towels, where as the hand
dryer expenditure would be as low as $14.00
per year - this will vary due to cost of paper
towels and cost of electricity)
6. Pros and Cons for Hand Dryer
Cons
It found that after washing and
drying hands with the warm air dryer,
the total number of bacteria was found
to increase on average on the finger
pads by 194% and on the palms by
254%
7. Pros and Cons for Paper Towel
Pros
They are very good for cleaning up spills in
a pinch
Good for wrapping a head of lettuce to put
in the fridge
Great for protection in the microwave-use
to catch spills when food boils over
Can be used in various arts and crafts
8. Pros and Cons for Paper Towel
Cons
The air-dryer was found to have less than half
the global warming burden of the paper towels,
over a five-year lifespan. That’s because paper
towels take energy to manufacture, transport and
remove—and they can’t be recycled, because
they’ve just been contaminated by your freshly
washed hands.
9. My Personal Note
Everyone in the cleaning industry has always
been told that hand dryers in restrooms are
not sanitary, they spread germs and bacteria
around. I always thought that this just came
from the paper companies because they are
losing sales to the hand dryers.
10. My Personal Note
A couple of years ago, I was traveling with my friend
(Doc), and I noticed that after he washed his hands
and noticed that there were no paper towels, only a
hand dryer he left the restroom with wet hands. I
asked him about it. He said that hand dryers blow a
lot of germs and bacteria around. He also told me to
take a look under the hand dryer next time I was in a
restroom. There is a filter underneath the hand dryer
that is supposed to be cleaned on a weekly basis. I
looked at one and it looked like it hadn't been cleaned
in years. It had layers and layers of caked on gunk
(disgusting).
11. My Personal Note
Since then I will not use hand dryers in
restrooms. Now this is where the story gets
really interesting. The schools and
universities that have had the H1N1 (swine
flu) outbreak this year are being told by the
health department that they have to take out
all of their hand dryers and replace them with
towel dispensers because the hand dryers
are spreading disease. Please pass this
along so everyone knows not to use hand
dryers.
