Date Rape: How does date rape affect college students (ages 18-24)?

Date rape is the most common rape known to mankind. It is rape without
constent and influence by someone the victims know. It could be someone you meet at a
party or someone you truly love and trust, like your boyfriend or husband. It is known to
occur behind abbandind buildings, parks, a person’s home, darl places, and ect. Date rape
can happen to women of all ages but young women between the ages of 18 to 24 are at
highest risk. Date rape is negative or traumatizing to one’s mind set. Date rape is not
only sexual intercourse but it can be oral sex as well. Date rape is not the only rape there
are many other types of rapes. College students date rapes are the most unreported crime
in today’s world. It not only happens to female students but male students as well.
Most date rape victims are being forced and lurred into any sexual contact. The attackers
use blackmail, drugs, alcohhol, and pyhsical and verbal threats to force the vitcims into having
sexual intercourse. In some cases a person may agree to have sexual intercourse and then decide
to not not have sex, but the second party force the victim into continuing to take action in the
traumatic event.
Most people do not believe that rape can happen to men but it does. Men are supposed to
be strong, brave, protective with themselves as well as loved ones. Any man can be assaulted
regardless of the strength, appearance, race, and sexuality. Male students are getting date rape by
both men and women. Not only men drug men but women have mastered the art in slipping
drugs into male students beverages. Women are targeting male students in bars spiking their
drinks and later robbing them. Women are robbing men for jewelry, credit cards, money, and
more expensive property. Usually a gang of female student date rape a male student.
Homosexuality plays a role in the male student society. When a gay male gets rape he
normally blames himself for what happens. Some people believe some gay males deserve to get
raped just for being a homosexual. For heterosexual men it question their sexuality whether or
not this will make them become gay. Gay men obtain a greater risk than heterosexual men
because of anti-gay violence. All date rape victims suffer from the aftermath of the event, but
women and men aftermath differs from each other. Men suffer from internal tearing and damage
to their male organs and body. Men are also more likely to contract HIV after being raped by a
homosexual male. “In the USA, it is said to be far more male rapes in prison than there are all of
female rapes” (Starman, 2004).

“The fear of being raped is one of the most prominent concerns among women, and is a
major contributor to the National Victim Center's finding that 73% of women say they limit the
places they go to by themselves (Penden78). On college campuses female students have to go
places at certain times of the day just to stay safe and not get raped. Female student know where
to go and where not go when they are alone. Most places are not safe to go to. A student can be
anywhere and date rape can still occur.
” Every year, an estimated one woman in eight in college is raped and in 85% of those assaults
the women knew their attacker (Texas Woman's University, 2007). In most cases in date rape the
attacker is
The women that are date raped in colege are 18-23 of age. Women experience physical,
mental, spiritually, and psychologically issues during the aftermath of the traumatic experience.
Women also analyze the political study behind date rape which serves as an answer to the
problem of date rape in society. Date rape changes the mindset of a woman’s perspective on life
and their surroundings. What most human being do not know is that men are being date raped as
well. Men are being raped by not only women but men too.
Today the media portray date rape as an offshoot of men’s desire for power
and their feeling of entitlement. All sexual assaults whether by a known person or a
stranger are about power rather than sexual gradification. Some sexual assualts are more
so surrounding sexual gradification but it is unlikely to be true. Date rape is unacceptable
because it reveals the underlying assumption that men feel ownership over women and a
perceived entiltlement to have sexual intercourse if they go out on a date or party with a
female, whether or not the woman wants to.
According to The National Center for Victims of Crime, college students, especially
women, are, in fact, silenced before, during and after the rape. This silencing occurs at all four
levels: culture, the individual, the situational or interpersonal context, and the immediate context.
Rape is a traumatic experience that isn't always reported. In the general population, only 60% of
rapes and sexual assaults are reported to the police; but rape on college campuses is even more
under-reported.College campuses and communities tend to educate students about unknown
rape, but not date rape. As a result, male and female college students are silenced from the
outset, as there isn't a clear definition of date rape. The ambiguity and confusion at the cultural
level leads women to deny when date rape occurs. Further, women tend to put their own

communication skills on trial, wondering if they clearly communicated a lack of consent. After
the rape, female students are reluctant to label the act as “date rape” and are unlikely to report it.
In today’s society on college campuses any sexual activty is known as “hooking up”.
During parties more than half of college students consume alcohol and drugs. Alcohol is
involved in 75 percent of attacks on school grounds and for college students. Alcohol and drugs
causes the central nervous system of the body of a human being to be affected. Because alcohol
passes throught the stomach and goes into the small intestines the alcohol is absorbed in to the
blood and distributed throughout the body. When the blood is distributed throughout the body it
immediately affect the nervous sytsem causing a human to response to everything around hikm
or her to decrease. The person’s speech becomes slurred and have trouble walking ;drunk. When
a person is drunk or high with substances does actions that are dangerous to themselves and
others. In society most people blamed alcohol accountable for their actions. But alcohol is no
excuse for what has and will happen to men and women in society.
Some people blame women when it comes to date rape. Women areusually blamed
because of their appearance and demeanor towards men. The society has a persistent and ugly
attitude in our society that women sometimes “deserve what they get” if they are dress
provocatively in sexual situations and change their mind in sexual activities. At college parties
female student try their best to impress the male students by their appearance. Wearing short
skirts, dresses, and shorts are mainy worn to catch the male eye. Women being procovative
towards the male students to get what they want at parties. The female students act a certain way
to get free drinks or meals but the way the students act is taken in the wrong way.
What makes males think that they have women consent in sexual intercourse? What
makes males think it is ok to continue to have sexual intercourse that does not have approval by
women? In order for sexual intercourse to be fine and not have an issue both parties have to have
consent to the sexual intercourse. Without both consent from both parties mainly the female this
is called rape. When both male and female know each other it is called date rape. Husbands,
boyfriends, best friends, longtime friends, uncles, and other known men in a female’s life could
and do date rape. Myths about date rape and rape in general is about consent given to rapist.
Date rape has increased in the past year. The statistics of a male date rape is more than a
female date rape. Psychologist Diann Ackard and public health researcher Dianne Neumark-
Sztainer of the University of Minnesota believe that after date rape happens the attitudes and

behaviors of the victims. Boys are dating more males today and women are being more forceful
in relationships towards men. It is said that adolescents who experience date rape are more likely
to have eating disorders. The adolescents punish their body for the abuse that was already done.
Rape victims are more prominent to commit suicide, eating disorders, and other physical
issues with one self. Most victims endure related posttraumatic stress disorder. The related
posttraumatic stress disorder is an emotional disorder. People with this disorder to avoid familiar
places that remind them of the episode (traumatic event). With the disorder the victims are more
sensitive to the “normal life”. Some victims question their religious beliefs. They may ask their
God why did they get raped or what they do to deserve to get raped? Various question are asked
by themselves and sometimes other people.
Rape carry itself in many ways. Rape is the most embarrassing, humiliating, and not to
mention damaging to the victim’s mind, body, and soul. After being raped the victim feels dirty,
violated, blame themselves for what happened. Rape is not something a person must take
lightly. Rape is a serious matter regardless of the situation. The fear of being raped leads to
depression and more prominent concern for both women and men. Both sex get raped by each
other in groups or by an individual.
A young female named Susan was raped by a male that she met while she was at the
school’s café. Susan went out on a date with the male. During the date the two had a forty-five
minute date. Within the conversation the male started rubbing Susan the wrong way Susan told
the male to stop. Susan was later attacked (date raped) by the male.
A college student names Sydney Davis was date rape after coming from a local near her
college.Sydney went to the club with a group of girls that she knew and trust. After partying one
of her friends called a unknown man to pick them up for a after party that they were told about.
When the unknown male arrived at the club to pick them up all of the young women including
Sydney left to go to the after party with him. Coming to find out there was no after party.
Sydney’s friend was lurred into coming to the man’s apartment to drink and be stay the night
over. All of Sydney’s friends made a agreement that all of the young females stay together.
Everyone had a alcoholic drink prior to coming to the man’s apartment but was not drunk.
Everyone changed into something comfortable and went to desinated rooms to sleep in. Sydney
was in a room with a female that she knew but were only associates. The young lady left Sydney

alone to have sexual activites with the unknown man. After being left unknown man #2 came
into the room with Sydney while she was sleep and raped her. Sydney was beyond scared about
the situation and talk about the aftermath of the traumatic experience.
Many people do not recognize their “rape” experience as a crime because they knew their
attacker. Victims are raped in various places including in their own home. Home is where a
person supposed to feel protected at all time but that does not always happened. Date raped can
occur at anytime and anywhere. For college students date rape can occur in their own dorm
rooms or student apartments.
According to statistics of the Rape Abuse Incest National Network 25 percent of
college women are raped during their college life. 25 percent of college women have either been
raped or suffered attempted rape. Students in collge do not realize that date rape can happen at
anytime anywhere regardless of the circumstances. “Date rape is a major alcohol-related problem
that schools don't advertise and U.S. News & World Report doesn't mention in its annual college
issue. But administrators and counselors deal with it every year. The University of Colorado
advised female students, When you're drunk, you'll have sex with someone you wouldn't have
lunch with, so bring a condom. ... The quality of men's manners seems to be directly proportional
to how drunk I am”, Koren Zailckas, Student of The University of Colorado.
According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 65 percent of the
attackers goes unreported. The atackers goes unreported because the victim has been threaten by
the attacker, afraid that it will happen again, be afraid that no one will believe them, ashamed
about what happened, or may be afraid what people might think about him or her. Most victims
do not even report the traumatic event to the authorities. Some victims think that they can handle
the situation on their own. Counsel themselves back to reality and in the right state of mind.
When a person is raped their mind and emotions has been attacked as well. Some victims feel
as though if they tell or report the rape to friends that they will be rejected. After the rape has
occur the victim obtain a fear of their attacker. In some cases rapes are brought to court and the
victim as well as the attacker have to face each other. The biggest fear of the attacker is facing
his ir her attacker again. When a rape is reported the victim have to go through a long, stressful ,
and on going process. A process which makes the victim feels as though that they have been
raped again. Students are apprehensive about reporting the attacker and the rape because of the
time frame of the investigate process and the court process. The process will make the victim

feel as though that they have been rape once again. Invetigating may be even intense because the
victim may not want to be interviewed by the same sex as the attacker.
Because most date rape is the most “unreported crime” on college campuses most attacker
are prone to attacker again. According to the National Center For Victims of Crime 33 percent of
male students survyed said they would commit date rape. If a attacker is not getting caught in
the act of forced raped of course he or she will do it again.
More than half of college students have experience drugs and alcohol. At college parties
drugs and alcohol are taken. Drugs are slipped into drinks and drugs are smoked or sniffed. Date
rape drugs are mainly used to rape students. 75 percent male and 25 percent female students
involved in date rape are drugged. The most common drugs used for date rape are Rohypnol,
Ketamine, and GHB. GHB stands for Gamma Hydroxybutyric. There are many street names for
the drugs that are used on college campuses. Drugs called Roofies, Special K, Kit Kat, Georgia
Home Boy, Bedtime Scoop, forget pill, mind easers, and soap are a few names for the drugs. GH
B also known as “Roofies” are known to be the drug that are slipped into drinks.
The symptoms of the drugs are vomiting, nausea, loss of muscle control, coma or death,
and feeling rapid drunkness. Each drug obtains different side effects to a person’s body. The
Rohypnol tablets looks like asprin. Ketamine is white powder that dissolves in water. GHB is a
liquid drug that is ordorless and colorless, it sometimes comes in a powder pill. Most time people
mistaken the tablet for asprin. The Rohypnol tablets are white and crossed scored on one side
with “ROCHE” and “1” or “2” encircled on the other. The tablets dissolve easy when it comes
into contact with liquid.
The common date drugs are used for the event because it is colorless, traceless, and
tasteless. the only drug that has a taste is GHB, when GHB is mixed the drink will be salty. Date
rape drugs leave a victims’s body in 72 hours. The date rape drugs are fact acting it usually take
effect to a person’s body within 20-30 minutes. The date rape drug Rohypnol is distributed in
bubble wrappers costing a customer $2.00-$4.00 per tablet.
Years ago GHB was sold in drug stores and gyms as a sleeping aid for people, fat burner,
and a muscle enhancer. In Europe the drug is used to aid child birth, treatment for alcohol
withdrawl syndrome, and treatment for alcoholism. GHB was fonded by a french researcher in
the 1960s in Europe.”Narcotics have been systematically scapegoated and demonized. The idea
that anyone can use drugs and escape a horrible fate is an anathema to these

idiots....”(M.Dillion,1989)
There are ways to aviod being date rape. Being more cautious will endure a better outcome
to one’s life. Following your instincts or “woman’s intuition is better than nothing. “Trust your
instinct. Your mistakes might as well be your own, instead of someone else” (Wilder) Do not
every leave a party by yourself, leave with a group of friends. Never go to a party alone always
have more than one friend with you. If you are drinking do not share your drinks, leave your
drinks, or accept a drink from anyone. “The most decisive actions of our life... are most often
unconsidered actions” (A.Gide,The Counterfeiters,1926). Do not drink from open containers
suck as punch bowel because people may have mixed the punch with various alcohol as well as
date rape drugs. Date carefully, in other words be carfeul who you let in your personal space and
life. Everyone is not to trust and be given the creditiblity of one’s trust. Be with someone who do
not drink or do drugs. Watch out for your friends at parties or where ever the social event is
taken place.

  • 1. Date Rape: How does date rape affect college students (ages 18-24)? 1 How does date rape affect society? (College students ages 18-23) Destiney Guthrie H8 Freshman Comp Research Paper Samantha Piper
  • 2. Date Rape: How does date rape affect college students (ages 18-24)? 2 Date rape is the most common rape known to mankind. It is rape without constent and influence by someone the victims know. It could be someone you meet at a party or someone you truly love and trust, like your boyfriend or husband. It is known to occur behind abbandind buildings, parks, a person’s home, darl places, and ect. Date rape can happen to women of all ages but young women between the ages of 18 to 24 are at highest risk. Date rape is negative or traumatizing to one’s mind set. Date rape is not only sexual intercourse but it can be oral sex as well. Date rape is not the only rape there are many other types of rapes. College students date rapes are the most unreported crime in today’s world. It not only happens to female students but male students as well. Most date rape victims are being forced and lurred into any sexual contact. The attackers use blackmail, drugs, alcohhol, and pyhsical and verbal threats to force the vitcims into having sexual intercourse. In some cases a person may agree to have sexual intercourse and then decide to not not have sex, but the second party force the victim into continuing to take action in the traumatic event. Most people do not believe that rape can happen to men but it does. Men are supposed to be strong, brave, protective with themselves as well as loved ones. Any man can be assaulted regardless of the strength, appearance, race, and sexuality. Male students are getting date rape by both men and women. Not only men drug men but women have mastered the art in slipping drugs into male students beverages. Women are targeting male students in bars spiking their drinks and later robbing them. Women are robbing men for jewelry, credit cards, money, and more expensive property. Usually a gang of female student date rape a male student. Homosexuality plays a role in the male student society. When a gay male gets rape he normally blames himself for what happens. Some people believe some gay males deserve to get raped just for being a homosexual. For heterosexual men it question their sexuality whether or not this will make them become gay. Gay men obtain a greater risk than heterosexual men because of anti-gay violence. All date rape victims suffer from the aftermath of the event, but women and men aftermath differs from each other. Men suffer from internal tearing and damage to their male organs and body. Men are also more likely to contract HIV after being raped by a homosexual male. “In the USA, it is said to be far more male rapes in prison than there are all of female rapes” (Starman, 2004).
  • 3. Date Rape: How does date rape affect college students (ages 18-24)? 3 “The fear of being raped is one of the most prominent concerns among women, and is a major contributor to the National Victim Center's finding that 73% of women say they limit the places they go to by themselves (Penden78). On college campuses female students have to go places at certain times of the day just to stay safe and not get raped. Female student know where to go and where not go when they are alone. Most places are not safe to go to. A student can be anywhere and date rape can still occur. ” Every year, an estimated one woman in eight in college is raped and in 85% of those assaults the women knew their attacker (Texas Woman's University, 2007). In most cases in date rape the attacker is The women that are date raped in colege are 18-23 of age. Women experience physical, mental, spiritually, and psychologically issues during the aftermath of the traumatic experience. Women also analyze the political study behind date rape which serves as an answer to the problem of date rape in society. Date rape changes the mindset of a woman’s perspective on life and their surroundings. What most human being do not know is that men are being date raped as well. Men are being raped by not only women but men too. Today the media portray date rape as an offshoot of men’s desire for power and their feeling of entitlement. All sexual assaults whether by a known person or a stranger are about power rather than sexual gradification. Some sexual assualts are more so surrounding sexual gradification but it is unlikely to be true. Date rape is unacceptable because it reveals the underlying assumption that men feel ownership over women and a perceived entiltlement to have sexual intercourse if they go out on a date or party with a female, whether or not the woman wants to. According to The National Center for Victims of Crime, college students, especially women, are, in fact, silenced before, during and after the rape. This silencing occurs at all four levels: culture, the individual, the situational or interpersonal context, and the immediate context. Rape is a traumatic experience that isn't always reported. In the general population, only 60% of rapes and sexual assaults are reported to the police; but rape on college campuses is even more under-reported.College campuses and communities tend to educate students about unknown rape, but not date rape. As a result, male and female college students are silenced from the outset, as there isn't a clear definition of date rape. The ambiguity and confusion at the cultural level leads women to deny when date rape occurs. Further, women tend to put their own
  • 4. Date Rape: How does date rape affect college students (ages 18-24)? 4 communication skills on trial, wondering if they clearly communicated a lack of consent. After the rape, female students are reluctant to label the act as “date rape” and are unlikely to report it. In today’s society on college campuses any sexual activty is known as “hooking up”. During parties more than half of college students consume alcohol and drugs. Alcohol is involved in 75 percent of attacks on school grounds and for college students. Alcohol and drugs causes the central nervous system of the body of a human being to be affected. Because alcohol passes throught the stomach and goes into the small intestines the alcohol is absorbed in to the blood and distributed throughout the body. When the blood is distributed throughout the body it immediately affect the nervous sytsem causing a human to response to everything around hikm or her to decrease. The person’s speech becomes slurred and have trouble walking ;drunk. When a person is drunk or high with substances does actions that are dangerous to themselves and others. In society most people blamed alcohol accountable for their actions. But alcohol is no excuse for what has and will happen to men and women in society. Some people blame women when it comes to date rape. Women areusually blamed because of their appearance and demeanor towards men. The society has a persistent and ugly attitude in our society that women sometimes “deserve what they get” if they are dress provocatively in sexual situations and change their mind in sexual activities. At college parties female student try their best to impress the male students by their appearance. Wearing short skirts, dresses, and shorts are mainy worn to catch the male eye. Women being procovative towards the male students to get what they want at parties. The female students act a certain way to get free drinks or meals but the way the students act is taken in the wrong way. What makes males think that they have women consent in sexual intercourse? What makes males think it is ok to continue to have sexual intercourse that does not have approval by women? In order for sexual intercourse to be fine and not have an issue both parties have to have consent to the sexual intercourse. Without both consent from both parties mainly the female this is called rape. When both male and female know each other it is called date rape. Husbands, boyfriends, best friends, longtime friends, uncles, and other known men in a female’s life could and do date rape. Myths about date rape and rape in general is about consent given to rapist. Date rape has increased in the past year. The statistics of a male date rape is more than a female date rape. Psychologist Diann Ackard and public health researcher Dianne Neumark- Sztainer of the University of Minnesota believe that after date rape happens the attitudes and
  • 5. Date Rape: How does date rape affect college students (ages 18-24)? 5 behaviors of the victims. Boys are dating more males today and women are being more forceful in relationships towards men. It is said that adolescents who experience date rape are more likely to have eating disorders. The adolescents punish their body for the abuse that was already done. Rape victims are more prominent to commit suicide, eating disorders, and other physical issues with one self. Most victims endure related posttraumatic stress disorder. The related posttraumatic stress disorder is an emotional disorder. People with this disorder to avoid familiar places that remind them of the episode (traumatic event). With the disorder the victims are more sensitive to the “normal life”. Some victims question their religious beliefs. They may ask their God why did they get raped or what they do to deserve to get raped? Various question are asked by themselves and sometimes other people. Rape carry itself in many ways. Rape is the most embarrassing, humiliating, and not to mention damaging to the victim’s mind, body, and soul. After being raped the victim feels dirty, violated, blame themselves for what happened. Rape is not something a person must take lightly. Rape is a serious matter regardless of the situation. The fear of being raped leads to depression and more prominent concern for both women and men. Both sex get raped by each other in groups or by an individual. A young female named Susan was raped by a male that she met while she was at the school’s café. Susan went out on a date with the male. During the date the two had a forty-five minute date. Within the conversation the male started rubbing Susan the wrong way Susan told the male to stop. Susan was later attacked (date raped) by the male. A college student names Sydney Davis was date rape after coming from a local near her college.Sydney went to the club with a group of girls that she knew and trust. After partying one of her friends called a unknown man to pick them up for a after party that they were told about. When the unknown male arrived at the club to pick them up all of the young women including Sydney left to go to the after party with him. Coming to find out there was no after party. Sydney’s friend was lurred into coming to the man’s apartment to drink and be stay the night over. All of Sydney’s friends made a agreement that all of the young females stay together. Everyone had a alcoholic drink prior to coming to the man’s apartment but was not drunk. Everyone changed into something comfortable and went to desinated rooms to sleep in. Sydney was in a room with a female that she knew but were only associates. The young lady left Sydney

After being left unknown man #2 came into the room with Sydney while she was sleep and raped her. Sydney was beyond scared about the situation and talk about the aftermath of the traumatic experience. Many people do not recognize their “rape” experience as a crime because they knew their attacker. Victims are raped in various places including in their own home. Home is where a person supposed to feel protected at all time but that does not always happened. Date raped can occur at anytime and anywhere. For college students date rape can occur in their own dorm rooms or student apartments. According to statistics of the Rape Abuse Incest National Network 25 percent of college women are raped during their college life. 25 percent of college women have either been raped or suffered attempted rape. Students in collge do not realize that date rape can happen at anytime anywhere regardless of the circumstances. “Date rape is a major alcohol-related problem that schools don't advertise and U.S. News & World Report doesn't mention in its annual college issue. But administrators and counselors deal with it every year. The University of Colorado advised female students, When you're drunk, you'll have sex with someone you wouldn't have lunch with, so bring a condom. ... The quality of men's manners seems to be directly proportional to how drunk I am”, Koren Zailckas, Student of The University of Colorado. According to the National Coalition Against Domestic Violence, 65 percent of the attackers goes unreported. The atackers goes unreported because the victim has been threaten by the attacker, afraid that it will happen again, be afraid that no one will believe them, ashamed about what happened, or may be afraid what people might think about him or her. Most victims do not even report the traumatic event to the authorities. Some victims think that they can handle the situation on their own. Counsel themselves back to reality and in the right state of mind. When a person is raped their mind and emotions has been attacked as well. Some victims feel as though if they tell or report the rape to friends that they will be rejected. After the rape has occur the victim obtain a fear of their attacker. In some cases rapes are brought to court and the victim as well as the attacker have to face each other. The biggest fear of the attacker is facing his ir her attacker again. When a rape is reported the victim have to go through a long, stressful , and on going process. A process which makes the victim feels as though that they have been raped again. Students are apprehensive about reporting the attacker and the rape because of the time frame of the investigate process and the court process. The process will make the victim
  • 7. Date Rape: How does date rape affect college students (ages 18-24)? 7 feel as though that they have been rape once again. Invetigating may be even intense because the victim may not want to be interviewed by the same sex as the attacker. Because most date rape is the most “unreported crime” on college campuses most attacker are prone to attacker again. According to the National Center For Victims of Crime 33 percent of male students survyed said they would commit date rape. If a attacker is not getting caught in the act of forced raped of course he or she will do it again. More than half of college students have experience drugs and alcohol.
