Theme: Innovation
Format: Multimedia
Context: of HE & Lifelong Learning
Being a lover of all things Apple & working in technology natural fit
Why?
Make study Anywhere, Anytime reality
with fast mobile networks and wifi on the bus
it now possible with the right apps
I have a 40+min bus journey every day – longer if it rains!
Born of my own need as learner, studying a master’s course
part-time wanting to increase my productivity in gaps of time
study on the bus, exercising, or cooking
As a full-time manager in IT, I sit at a desk all day and wanted
to break free
Make it Fun & Engaging
Project Aims
• Free Apps & Open Educational Resources - OER
give back to community and provide a framework for teachers and students to
improving learning object over time – from Groups, to Nets, Sets and Collectives,
(Dron, 2014) contirbuted by Katherine in a student session.
• Networked Practitioner – develop networked practice
• Learner centred object – self paced; revisit over and over.
Amy’s users loved this in mymaths shared in a student session
• Provides learner Scaffolding & metacognition
as they develop Personal Learning Environment - PLE
• Engagement & Collaboration

It is clear from the literature that learners value this type of support
and use it (Henderson, Selwyn et al., 2017)
It enables learners to use time waiting for the bus or walking the dog
to squeeze in some studying (Kukulska-Hulme, 2012)
Learners expectations of using technology are higher as found by
the UCL study on the Google Generation (Rowlands et al., 2008)

Educators support
Supported by Oxford University's Senior Learning Technologist, Dr. Jill Fresen
"Denise's proposal to develop a study toolkit guide
of existing mobile apps and tools, to support students who want to study 'on the move'
addresses a real need experienced by
modern, mobile students."
In an interview with Senior Manager of Learning Technology, Marion Manton.
Oxford University Continuing Education, as learners aged 18-90 pursue lifelong
learning online.

Developing a Personal
Learning Environment - PLE
supported by Mobile Tools for studying

Multimedia - Empirical
Evidence
Richard E. Mayer
‘The case for multimedia learning rests on the premise that learners
can better understand an explanation when it is presented in words
and pictures than when it is presented with words alone,’
Recommendations
• Text & images min
Place text next to image - not under/captions
• Sound & Images best
Brain has 2 channels
Cognitively processed separately
To view the Guide http://bit.ly/2nZN27A
Problems - Lessons Learned
• A digital innovation project of this kind is very demanding –
countless hours; tools learned: Sway, Screencastomatic,
SurveyMonkey, AdobeSpark, Powtoons, Powerpoint, Apowersoft,
etc.
• Consider taking H818 as your last module, body work to draw on
• No actual App or set proscribed apps – guidance for analysing apps
and creating own PLE. Original title “Mobile Apps “Toolkit” caused
confusion so revised name to from Mobile Study App Guide
To view the Guide http://bit.ly/2nZN27A
Conclusions
• Worthwhile - through networked practice invited write a proposal
for Oxford Museum using Sway in informal - direct result of
Networked Practitioner & H818
• In addition: developing my own Personal Learning Environment with
GoogleDocs, MERLOT, Wordpress, Twitter, Facebook, Cloudworks, OU
Forums, & Open Studio – Mobile Apps are an evolving part PLE

provided valuable feedback noted in the guide acknowledgements. Apologies, if you name should

Notas do Editor

  1. Good afternoon and Welcome to my presentation. I am so excited to show you my Mobile Apps Study Guide. I have been eating, breathing, sleeping and dreaming about this project everyday for 4 months. I created this guide as an overview to help learners use apps to study on a mobile devices.
  2. In my experience to make anywhere anytime a reality – good apps are necessary. 40min bus journey I want to use to study Born of my own desire study while commuting.
  3. OK READY TO PLAY? With the guide ------- THE URL IS ON more SLIDES IS YOU HAVE any PROBLEMS
  4. Can fix Word export and PDF if full Acrobat DC
  5. It is clear from the research and interviews that students and educators find such a guide useful
  6. To check the my assumptions about mobiles and apps I created my first little survey at cmas break using – Smonkey – it is free 10 Questions
  7. The Guide is supported by educators in learning technology and distance education
  8. This article on PLEs is a part of 7 Things series by Educause and informed my learning outcomes and objectives
  9. There is no app or proscribed set of apps RATHER guidance for analysing your own choices In early user testing the word ”Toolkit” caused some confusion so changed it to M Study App GUIDE.
