Safety
Working in production facilities presents certain hazards not in other lines of
work. With the increase in the greenhouse jobs due to the cannabis industry
are you ready with your safety program?
Creating a safety culture helps to:
1. boost morale
2. Retain good workers
3. Prevent injuries
4. Increase productivity which increases customer satisfaction

The Safety Basics
Regardless of the industry you work in there are basic requirements in each of
the provinces for your safety program.
Due diligence is the basis for ensuring your safety programs are in place,
working and keeping you and your workers safe.
As with any systems such as safety or quality programs and procedures
outline controls to manage risk and mitigate hazards.

The Key to your Safety Program
In order to effectively manage risk and mitigate hazard in the workplace the
first step is to identify the hazards.
In a greenhouse production facility some common hazards you may
encounter are:
1. Ergonomic hazards
2. Heavy equipment operation such as forklifts
3. Power tools such as clippers
4. Working with pesticides
5. Heat and fatigue is also a possibility
Once you have identified your hazards they will need to be rated as to the risk
they present. How severe could an accident be? How complex is the task?
How often is the task performed?

Safety Programs
There are basic requirements in each province for a safety program these can
include but are not limited to (this is not a complete list) :
1. A health and safety policy
2. A workplace violence and harassment program
3. Rights and responsibilities including the hazards in the workplace
4. PPE (proper protective equipment)
5. WHMIS (workplace hazardous materials information system)
6. First aid and Emergency procedures including incident investigation
7. Working alone
8. Orientation
9. Use of power tools and mobile equipment
10. Lock Out and Confined Spaces programs and procedures
11. Workplace inspections program
12. Safety representatives or Joint health and safety committees requirements

When are Safe Work Procedures Required?
• Safe work procedures generally are written for tasks that include
hazardous substances or materials, complicated tasks and the use of
machinery.
• They are also written for tasks that are performed frequently, less routine
tasks can also pose risk if people forget over time how to safety perform
the job function.
Once you have identified the hazards and rated the risk this will help you to
see what programs and controls are required.
Some examples are : lock out, chemical use (pesticides, cleaning products),
ergonomics, pedestrian safety and mobile equipment operation

Training
• In order to ensure worker safety as you all know training is required.
• Many training items are legislated in the province such as WHMIS and the
right to know.
• There are items that wont be listed specifically in your legal requirements
that will also require training, again these items are identified when you
do your hazard identification (this is not unlike your quality program
where critical points are identified and controlled).
• It is important to gauge the transfer of this information
as well to employees via competency evaluations
(testing and or visual confirmation).
