Presentation by Dr. Zongyan Yang, Principal Coastal Modelling Specialist, jointly with Eng. Fadi Makarem, Principal Marine Projects Engineer at Dubai Municipality, at the Gulf Model Community User Day (Delft3D FM Suite, ...), during Delft Software Days - Edition 2021. Tuesday, 12 October 2021.
What are the key points to focus on before starting to learn ETL Development....
Application of Arabian Gulf Community Model to Dubai Coastal Waters

Critical Mesh Elements Optimized
5. Test Case 2-month Simulation Time
01 Domain 14 Hours
24 Domains 1.50 Hours
48 Domains 1.25 Hours
❑ Work Station Features:
➢ Intel Xeon 8260 CPU @ 2.4GHz 2.4GHz
➢ 2 Nodes
➢ 48 Cores
➢ 96 Threads
❑ Deltares Integrated Model Runner (DIMR) was used to run combinations of
simulation cores by dividing the Gulf Community Model to subdomain
❑ This makes feasible to run many validation/calibration scenarios of Gulf
Community Model that consists of 293,000 elements for 2 months simulation

❑ Model validation showed that simulated currents tends to be strong in the
model using Manning roughness Coeff. = 0.02
❑ Several sensitivity tests:
➢ Manning Coef. = 0.015
➢ Manning Coef. = 0.018
➢ Manning Coef. = 0.020
➢ Manning Coef. = 0.025
➢ Manning Coef. = 0.030
➢ Manning Coef. = 0.035
❑ Model sensitivity were investigated by comparing currents speed and
direction at 2 offshore locations in Dubai coastal water
➢Jebel Ali offshore
➢Palm Deria offshore
❑ Validation plots will be presented

❑ The mesh nicely presents Dubai
Coastal, nearshore and offshore zones
❑ Consists of 79,000 elements
❑ Resolution ranges from 1000m offshore
to 30m in the coastal zone
❑ Running time for 2-month simulation is
21 hours on single core 3.5GHz
Information
15. ❑ D-Flow Flexible Mesh User Manual advised using 0.01 orthogonality
value for the mesh
❑ This is very strict criteria and sometimes difficult to achieve
❑ Slight local modifications were carried out in order to meet the
D-Flow orthogonality threshold set at 0.5 after which the numerical
model will automatically crash
❑ Dubai mesh has 0.01 or lower orthogonality value at most of the
areas. However, orthogonality is violated the advised 0.01 value in
some areas especially at the transition boundaries between coarse to
fine mesh elements
16. ❑ The Gulf Community Model was
used to supply Dubai model with
tidal boundary
❑ Dubai boundaries were nested as
observation points in the Gulf
Community Model
❑ The Gulf Model run for 2 months

❑ Model validation showed that simulated currents tends to be strong in the
model using the same roughness value of Gulf Community model (i.e.
Manning Coeff. = 0.02)
❑ Boundary input is from Gulf Community Model with Manning Coeff. = 0.02
❑ Several sensitivity tests:
➢ Manning Coef. = 0.020
➢ Manning Coef. = 0.025
➢ Manning Coef. = 0.030
➢ Manning Coef. = 0.035
➢ Manning Coef. = 0.040
❑ Model sensitivity were investigated by comparing currents speed and
direction at 2 offshore locations and 1 nearshore locations in Dubai coastal

28. ❑ The Gulf Community Model and Dubai Model produced good water level variation
❑ Both model overestimated currents strength in Dubai coastal water
29.
30. ❑ Model resolution: 5 ~ 10 km
❑ Non-stationary
❑ ECMWF wind and boundary input
❑ 72 years hindcast

34. ❑ It is a success of Delft3D-Wave in application to the Arabian Gulf.
❑ Over 70 years (1950 – present ) hourly waves in the Gulf has been simulated, and will be updated
frequently.
