People value wildlife and its habitat in a variety of ways. Some people place a value on knowing species exists or that they may be able to see it in the future. Others spend time and money on hunting, fishing, and wildlife viewing activities. Still others value the educational and research opportunities wildlife and its habitat provide.
Protection of habitat may also be the least cost way to comply with the Endangered Species Act and other state and local laws.
In 2006, the Defenders of Wildlife produced “A Review of the Economic Benefits of Species and Habitat Conservation.”
According to the S.C. Audubon the amount of bird watching in SC has been remarkable in the last few years. During the winter months, people come from NYC, NJ, Connecticut, and Rhode Island to view a rare gull at the Neversink Reservoir. During the spring, the Bashakill is packed with visitors from NY and NJ because it is one of the best known viewing spots in NY.
Trout Unlimited-Trout Unlimited Conducted a study entitled “The Economic Impact of Trout Fishing on the Delaware River Tailwaters in NY”.
The study determined that fishing on the West Branch, East Branch and main stem Delaware Rivers downstream of the NYC dams resulted in $17.7 million in direct expenditures in local business revenues, and generated $29.98 million of local economic activity.
2006 National Survey of Fishing, Hunting, and Wildlife-Associated Recreation: The US Fish & Wildlife Survey Published a survey with results specifically for NYS.
The results include equipment and trip related activities. Fishing-$923 million, of that non-resident spend an average of $86 per day. Hunting-$715 million, of that non-residents spend an average of $30 per day. Wildlife Watching-$1.5 billion , of that non-residents spend an average of $121 per day.
Natural areas attract visitors and tourists for fishing, horseback riding, hiking, birding, boating, hunting, agritourism…
A recent 2010 report shows that these visitors contribute substantial economic boost to the region – 56 dollars per person/day trip, 134 dollars per person/night
